The Four Coil Types Compared

Most mattresses sold in Canada today use one of four coil designs in their support core. Understanding what each one does explains a lot about why mattresses at similar price points feel completely different.

Bonnell Coils

Bonnell coils are the original. The design dates back to 19th century carriage seat springs and has not changed much since. Each coil is an hourglass shape, narrower in the middle, with a small knot at each end. The coils are laced together with helical wires, so they move as a connected unit.

The connected system means when one coil compresses, it pulls on its neighbours. This is fine for a mattress used occasionally in a guest room, but for a primary mattress used nightly, it creates two problems: motion transfers easily from one side to the other, and the connected structure means no independent body contouring. Bonnell mattresses tend to be the least expensive option and are entirely appropriate for that use case. Dorothy, our sleep specialist, usually recommends them only for guest rooms or children's first beds, where budget is the main factor and nightly use is not guaranteed.

Offset Coils

Offset coils are a refinement of the Bonnell. Same hourglass shape, but the top and bottom rings are flattened into a square or rectangular shape before being connected by hinged lacing wires. That squared edge creates a hinging action: the coil collapses more smoothly at the sides rather than popping under pressure. The result is quieter operation, better contouring than Bonnell, and slightly better motion isolation. Offset coil mattresses sit above Bonnell in price and quality, though they have largely been displaced in the mid-to-upper market by pocket coils.

Continuous Wire Coils

As the name says: one continuous wire forms the entire coil structure in a serpentine pattern, connected row to row. The mechanical simplicity makes them very durable. They are also inexpensive to manufacture. The downside is the same as Bonnell: because the coils are all connected, motion transfers across the surface and body contouring is limited. Continuous wire systems work best under a generous comfort layer that handles the contouring, while the coil core provides the structural stability. Some budget-to-mid mattresses use this approach effectively.

Pocket Coils (Individually Wrapped Coils)

Pocket coils are the standard in any mattress that takes motion isolation seriously. Each coil is individually wrapped in a fabric sleeve, so it compresses independently of every other coil around it. Press down on one coil and the adjacent coils do not move. This is why pocket coil mattresses are almost universally recommended for couples: one person's movement does not transmit across the bed to disturb the other.

The independence also means better body contouring. Each coil responds to its own load rather than averaging across a broader area. Your shoulder presses its coils down; your lower back presses different coils; your hip presses others still. The support surface responds to your actual shape rather than distributing your weight across a wider zone.

Coil Gauge: Wire Thickness and Firmness

Coil gauge is the thickness of the steel wire used to make the coil. The numbering runs counterintuitively: a lower gauge number means a thicker wire. A 13-gauge coil has notably thicker wire than a 17-gauge coil. Thicker wire is firmer and more resistant to compression.

Most mattress coils run between 13 and 17 gauge:

  • 13-14 gauge: Firm to very firm. Used in support cores designed for heavier sleepers or those who want significant pushback. Higher durability, less flexibility.
  • 14-15 gauge: Medium to firm. Common in mainstream mattress support cores. Good balance of firmness and response.
  • 15-16 gauge: Medium. Found in comfort-oriented innerspring and hybrid designs where the coil layer does more pressure relief work.
  • 16-17 gauge: Softer and more responsive. Used in microcoil comfort layers in hybrid designs. High flexibility, more contouring, lower load capacity. Not suitable as a primary support core for heavier adults.

Gauge interacts with coil count in important ways. Very high coil counts (1,000+) in a pocket coil Queen are often achieved by using thinner gauge coils. A 1,222-coil Queen using 14.5-gauge wire will feel different from the same count using 16-gauge wire, even though the count is identical. When comparing mattresses by coil count, try to find out the gauge as well.

Why Wire Gauge Matters for Durability

Thicker wire resists metal fatigue better over repeated compression cycles. A coil compressed thousands of times per year will gradually lose spring tension, a process called coil fatigue. Lower-gauge (thicker) wire maintains its spring constant longer than higher-gauge wire under equivalent loads. This is why Haex (2005), in the engineering reference text Back and Bed: Ergonomic Aspects of Sleeping, notes that wire gauge selection in mattress springs should account for expected body weight loading, not just initial firmness preferences. A lighter person on a thick-gauge coil gets a firm feel; that same coil under a heavier person gets a reasonable feel. Gauge matching to weight class is part of proper mattress construction.

Coil Count: What the Number Actually Tells You

Coil count is a heavily marketed specification. It is also significantly less meaningful than gauge and coil type in determining overall quality. Here is why.

Pocket coil systems routinely achieve high counts because each coil is small. It is geometrically simple to pack more small coils into a given area than large ones. A Queen mattress with 1,200 pocket coils has individual coils that are roughly 2 to 3 inches in diameter. A Queen mattress with 400 Bonnell coils has coils that are 5 to 6 inches in diameter. Neither number tells you which mattress is better without knowing the coil type.

The practical minimums for a Queen mattress are roughly:

  • Bonnell/offset: 300-400 coils is adequate
  • Continuous wire: 400+ coils is reasonable
  • Pocket coil: 800-1,000 is the entry point for good coverage; 1,000-1,500 is the typical range for mainstream to premium

Beyond those minimums, additional coils in the same type and gauge do not dramatically change the sleep experience. The quality difference between 1,200 and 1,400 pocket coils of the same gauge is small and may not be perceptible. What matters more is consistent coil construction, correct gauge for the application, and the quality of the comfort layers above.

Insulator Layers: The Forgotten Component

Insulator layers sit directly on top of the coil core, between the spring system and the comfort layers above. They serve two purposes: they prevent comfort materials from working their way down into the gaps between coils over time, and they smooth out the feel of the coil surface so you do not experience each coil tip as a point under you.

Traditional insulator layers were made from twisted sisal fibre, coir (coconut husk fibre), or cotton batting. These natural materials breathe well and have reasonable durability. Many budget mattresses use polyester or woven fabric insulators. Some higher-end mattresses use a thin layer of latex or foam bonded directly to the coil unit.

The insulator layer affects two things you will notice as a consumer: how the mattress feels in the first few months, when a thin or rough insulator lets the coil structure telegraph up through the comfort layers, and how long the mattress maintains its loft, because a poor insulator allows comfort material to gradually sink into the coil core. Zoned Coil Support Systems

Zoned coil construction varies the firmness of the coil system in different regions of the mattress to better match human body geometry. The typical zoning pattern uses firmer coils (heavier gauge or higher tension) under the lumbar and hip area, softer coils at the shoulder zone, and medium coils at the head and foot zones.

The rationale is straightforward. When you lie on your side, your shoulder needs to compress into the mattress to keep your spine straight. If the shoulder zone is too firm, the spine bows upward. Your hips are heavier and denser than your waist, so without firmer support there, hips sink deeper than the waist and the spine bows the other way. Zoning addresses both problems by calibrating coil resistance to body zone rather than applying uniform firmness across the full sleeping surface.

Testing for Zoned Support at the Showroom

Here is a simple in-store test for zoned coil effectiveness: lie on your side with your bottom arm extended straight above your head. Your shoulder should be able to compress into the mattress enough that your neck stays roughly level with the rest of your spine, without your arm going numb from being trapped. Then shift onto your back and check that your lower back does not arch away from the mattress. If both of these work without adjustment, the zoning is doing its job for your body geometry. What coil type is best for couples?

Pocket coils are the clear choice for couples. Because each coil moves independently, motion from one sleeper does not transmit to the other side of the mattress. Bonnell, continuous wire, and offset coils all have connected systems that transfer movement. If one of you gets up at 3 a.m. on a pocket coil mattress, the other person is unlikely to feel it. On a connected coil system, the movement is usually perceptible.

Does a higher coil count mean a better mattress?

Not directly. Coil count needs to be evaluated alongside coil type. A 1,200-count pocket coil Queen is an excellent mattress. A 1,200-count Bonnell system is impractical (the coils would be tiny and unstable). Count comparisons only make sense within the same coil type. For pocket coils, 800 to 1,000 is a reasonable Queen minimum; beyond 1,500, additional coils rarely produce noticeable improvements.

What does coil gauge mean, and which is better?

Coil gauge refers to wire thickness. Lower gauge numbers mean thicker wire. Thicker wire is firmer and more durable, resisting metal fatigue better under repeated compression. Do I need a zoned coil mattress?

Zoned coil support helps most if you are a side sleeper, have existing hip or shoulder pain, or are significantly different in weight from your sleep partner. Back sleepers on a quality non-zoned pocket coil system often do well without zoning. Stomach sleepers rarely need it. If you currently wake with hip or shoulder discomfort that goes away within an hour of being up, a zoned coil mattress is worth testing specifically for that reason.
