What Is Compression Modulus?

Compression modulus, sometimes called the support factor or comfort factor, is the ratio between the firmness at deep compression (65% ILD) and the firmness at surface compression (25% ILD). It tells you how the foam behaves as you sink deeper into it.

The Math Behind Compression Modulus

Compression modulus = 65% ILD divided by 25% ILD. For example, if a latex has a 25% ILD of 28 and a 65% ILD of 70, the compression modulus is 70/28 = 2.5. A higher number means the foam gets proportionally firmer as you compress it more deeply. Natural Talalay latex typically has a compression modulus of 2.5-3.5, while Dunlop latex ranges from 3.0-4.5. Polyurethane foam usually falls between 1.5-2.5. This is why latex feels more supportive than polyurethane foam of a similar surface firmness.

Dunlop Process

Dunlop latex is poured into a mould and vulcanised without the vacuum and freezing steps. Natural sediment settles during curing, creating a denser bottom and a slightly softer top. The cell structure is less uniform than Talalay.

Dunlop typically has a higher compression modulus. It feels firmer more quickly as you compress it, which some people describe as more "bouncy" or "supportive" compared to Talalay's gentler feel.
