Crib Sheet Safety: What Health Canada Recommends
The fitted crib sheet is the only bedding that should be in a crib for an infant under 12 months. This is not overcaution, it is consistent guidance from Health Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, all of which recommend a firm, flat surface covered only with a fitted sheet as the safest infant sleep environment.
A fitted crib sheet must fit snugly to the mattress with no excess fabric. If the sheet can be easily pulled away from the corner of the mattress or forms a pocket of loose fabric, it is not the right size for that mattress and should not be used.
Crib Sheet Sizes in Canada
Canadian crib mattresses follow a standard size set under federal safety regulations. Most fitted crib sheets are designed for this size:
- Standard crib mattress: 52 inches long x 28 inches wide (approximately 132 x 71 cm), up to 6 inches deep
- Mini crib / portable crib: Dimensions vary by model, typically smaller. Measure your specific mattress before purchasing. Mini crib sheets are not interchangeable with standard crib sheets.
- Convertible crib (toddler mode): When converting a crib to a toddler bed, use toddler bed sheets, not standard crib sheets, as the mattress position and dimensions may change.
Always measure your crib mattress before buying sheets, even when purchasing "standard" sizes. Canadian crib dimensions are regulated but mattress depth can vary, and a sheet designed for a 4-inch mattress may not fit a 6-inch mattress snugly.
Crib Sheet Materials: What to Choose
Organic Cotton (GOTS Certified)
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton is the most recommended material for crib sheets. The certification covers the entire supply chain, from field to finished product, ensuring the cotton was grown without synthetic pesticides and processed without harmful dyes or finishing chemicals. Infants spend many hours in contact with their crib sheet, making material safety a legitimate concern.
Conventional Cotton
Regular cotton is safe and widely used. Most mainstream crib sheets are conventional cotton at 200–300 thread count. Look for sheets that are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified if you want assurance about dye and chemical safety without paying the premium for full organic certification.
Bamboo / Bamboo-Cotton Blend
Bamboo fabric is very soft and increasingly popular for infant bedding. However, bamboo fabric quality varies significantly, the softness of bamboo depends on the manufacturing process, and some bamboo fabrics involve chemical processing (viscose/rayon method) that is less environmentally clean than the marketing suggests. If bamboo is your preference, look for bamboo-cotton blends from brands with clear manufacturing transparency.
Jersey Knit
Jersey knit crib sheets (similar to t-shirt fabric) stretch easily to fit the mattress, making them one of the most practical choices for middle-of-the-night sheet changes, they go on quickly even half-asleep. Typically made from cotton or cotton-poly blend. The stretch fit also means they stay snug to the mattress corners.
How Many Crib Sheets Do You Actually Need?
Three to four crib sheets is the practical minimum for most families. Infants require frequent sheet changes, diaper leaks, spit-up, and sweat can mean a sheet change in the middle of the night, which is when you most want a clean sheet ready to go without running a laundry load.
Keep one on the crib, one in the wash, and one or two clean in reserve. If your baby has skin sensitivities or reflux, four to five sheets allows more comfortable rotation through frequent washing.
What to Avoid in a Crib
Beyond the sheet, the infant sleep environment should be as bare as possible:
- No bumper pads, linked to infant deaths. Health Canada advises against all bumper pads, including mesh versions, for sleeping infants.
- No loose blankets or quilts, use a sleep sack or wearable blanket instead
- No pillows, even infant pillows are unsafe for babies under 12 months (see our note on baby pillows)
- No soft toys or stuffed animals, remove from the crib during sleep
- No positioners or wedges, firm, flat surface with only a fitted sheet

At minimum three, ideally four. Infants require frequent sheet changes from diaper leaks and spit-up. With three or four sheets in rotation, you always have a clean one ready when you need it most, at 3 a.m., not when the laundry is done.
