Quick Answer: No, standard melatonin is poor at keeping you asleep. It has a short half-life (20-50 minutes), meaning it leaves your system quickly after you fall asleep. If you wake up frequently in the night ("Sleep Maintenance Insomnia"), the cause is likely physical discomfort, temperature fluctuations, or stress, none of which melatonin can fix.

Reading Time: 4 minutes
The pattern is familiar to many Brantford residents: You take a pill at 10 p.m. You fall asleep by 10:30 p.m. Success!
But then, at 2:15 a.m., your eyes pop open. You are wide awake. The pill "wore off."
At Mattress Miracle, we call this the "Melatonin Trap." People keep increasing their dose to stay asleep longer, but it backfires. Understanding the biology of why you wake up is the only way to stop it.
Onset vs. Maintenance Insomnia
Sleep doctors divide insomnia into two camps:
- Sleep Onset Insomnia: You can't fall asleep. You stare at the ceiling.
- Sleep Maintenance Insomnia: You fall asleep fast, but you wake up multiple times or wake up too early.
Melatonin is fantastic for Onset (it signals "start sleep"). It is largely useless for Maintenance (staying asleep).
The Half-Life Problem

Melatonin has a very short "half-life" in the body, typically 20 to 50 minutes. This means that if you take 3mg at 10 p.m., by 2 a.m. there is almost none left active in your bloodstream.
Your body is supposed to produce its own steady stream of melatonin throughout the night to keep you under. Taking a spike of it at the beginning doesn't replace that steady stream; it just jumpstarts it.
The Rebound Effect
In fact, taking a huge dose (10mg) can cause a "rebound" awakening. Your body processes the massive spike, and when levels drop sharply a few hours later, the sudden change can actually jolt you awake.

Is "Time Release" the Answer?
Some brands sell "Extended Release" or "Time Release" melatonin. These pills dissolve slowly over 4-6 hours.
While this sounds perfect, it comes with a price: The Morning Hangover.
If the pill is still releasing melatonin at 6 a.m., and your alarm goes off at 7 a.m., you will wake up with high levels of sleep hormone in your blood. You will feel groggy, heavy, and possibly dizzy. It is hard to time it perfectly so it lasts exactly 8 hours.
3 Things That Actually Keep You Asleep

If you wake up at 2 a.m., your body is signaling discomfort or stress. Fix these to stay asleep:
1. Temperature Regulation
Your body temp naturally rises slightly around 3-4 a.m. If your room is warm or your memory foam mattress traps heat, this slight rise pushes you over the edge into wakefulness. The Fix: A breathable mattress (like the Restonic Luxury Silk & Wool) that vents heat away from you.
2. Blood Sugar Stability
If you eat a sugary snack before bed, your blood sugar crashes a few hours later. This crash releases adrenaline, waking you up. The Fix: A small protein/fat snack (almonds, cheese) before bed keeps blood sugar stable.
3. Magnesium
Unlike melatonin, magnesium relaxes muscles and the nervous system for hours. It doesn't have a sharp "drop off" effect. The Fix: 200-400mg of Magnesium Glycinate before bed.
The "Hip Check"
Brad asks every customer who wakes up at night: "Do you wake up in pain?" If you wake up to roll over because your hip hurts, that is not insomnia. That is a pressure point. A mattress with proper pressure relief keeps you in Deep Sleep longer, bypassing the 2 a.m. wake-up entirely.

Call 519-770-0001Should I take another pill when I wake up?
No. Taking melatonin at 3 a.m. will shift your circadian rhythm, confusing your body into thinking 3 a.m. is "bedtime." You will struggle to wake up in the morning and struggle to fall asleep the next night.
Does alcohol help stay asleep?
Absolutely not. Alcohol helps you fall asleep, but as it metabolizes (about 4 hours later), it releases stimulating chemicals that wake you up. It is the number one cause of maintenance insomnia.
Why do I always wake up at 3 a.m.?
This is often due to the "cortisol spike." Cortisol naturally starts rising around 3-4 a.m. to prepare you for the day. If you are stressed, it rises too early or too fast, jolting you awake.
Can a weighted blanket help?
Yes. Deep Pressure Stimulation from a weighted blanket can lower cortisol and raise serotonin, helping you bridge sleep cycles without waking up fully.
