Understanding what your body actually does with food at night gives you a much better framework for making decisions that suit your own schedule and health.
What Happens During Digestion at Night
Digestion is an active, energy-demanding process. When you eat, your stomach secretes hydrochloric acid and enzymes to begin breaking down food. Your small intestine then absorbs nutrients over a period that can range from two to five hours depending on what you ate.
High-fat meals slow this process considerably. Fat takes longer to digest than carbohydrates or protein because it requires bile from your gallbladder and lipase from your pancreas before it can be absorbed. A fatty meal eaten at 10 p.m. may still be actively digesting at 2 a.m.
While your digestive system is busy, blood flow is partially redirected to your gastrointestinal tract. Your body is essentially multitasking: trying to run an energy-intensive digestive process while simultaneously downshifting into the low-metabolism state that sleep requires. These two demands are not entirely compatible.
Body Temperature and Sleep Onset
Sleep onset depends on a drop in core body temperature of about one to two degrees Celsius. This cooling is initiated by your circadian system in the early evening and is one of the key physiological signals that it is time to sleep.
