Beyond Lavender: The Case for Other Sleep Oils
Lavender oil has dominated the sleep aromatherapy conversation for good reason. Its linalool content is well-documented, there are dozens of human studies, and it is broadly available and safe for most people. But lavender is not a universal solution. Some people find its scent clinical or unappealing. Some people, particularly those with a very floral sensitivity, find lavender stimulating rather than calming. And some people simply need a different mechanism than lavender provides.
The more useful insight from the research literature is that essential oils work through multiple distinct pathways, and matching the oil to the pathway most relevant to your sleep problem produces better results than defaulting to lavender because it is popular.
Are you unable to sleep because of anxiety and racing thoughts? Vetiver and bergamot address that pathway directly. Is your problem cortisol that stays high into the evening, keeping you alert? Frankincense may be the better tool. Do you fall asleep fine but have fragmented sleep and wake early? Cedarwood's GABA activity addresses sleep maintenance differently than sleep onset. Cedarwood: Cedrol and the GABA Connection
Cedarwood essential oil is distilled from the wood of several cedar species, most commonly Cedrus atlantica (Atlas cedar) and Juniperus virginiana (Virginia cedarwood). The two species produce oils with different compositions, but both contain cedrol, the compound most associated with sedative effects.
Cedrol is a sesquiterpene alcohol. In animal studies, inhaled cedrol has been shown to reduce locomotor activity (a marker of sedation), decrease heart rate, and lower blood pressure. The mechanism appears to involve both the GABA-A receptor system and the autonomic nervous system.
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. Drugs like benzodiazepines and sleep medications such as zopiclone work by enhancing GABA activity. Cedrol appears to have mild GABA-A agonist activity, meaning it may facilitate the same calming pathway, though at a far weaker level than pharmaceutical agents. A 2003 study by Kagawa et al. published in Chemical Senses found that inhaled cedrol reduced heart rate and blood pressure in both humans and mice, with the effect abolished by autonomic nervous system blockade, suggesting a central nervous system mechanism.
For practical use, cedarwood oil has a warm, woody, slightly earthy scent that many people find immediately calming, almost like a forest cabin. It blends well with sandalwood, vetiver, and lavender. A diffuser blend of 3 drops cedarwood and 2 drops lavender is a standard starting point for those who want to move beyond lavender alone.
Cedarwood is generally considered safe for topical use when appropriately diluted. It is non-phototoxic (unlike bergamot), non-irritating at normal dilutions, and suitable for most adults. Avoid during pregnancy as a precaution.
Vetiver: The Anxiety-Reduction Oil
Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a grass native to South Asia. Its roots produce a thick, heavy oil with a deeply earthy, smoky, almost molasses-like scent. It is one of the most grounding scents in aromatherapy, and also one of the most divisive. People who love vetiver tend to love it intensely; those who find it off-putting usually do so on first exposure.
The research on vetiver for sleep is promising. A 2015 study published in Natural Product Communications found that vetiver oil inhalation in rats reduced anxiety behaviour in the elevated plus maze test, a validated model of anxiety. The proposed mechanism involves interaction with GABA-A receptors, similar to cedarwood but through different constituent compounds.
More relevant for sleep is vetiver's effect on the autonomic nervous system. Studies using heart rate variability (HRV) measurement, a proxy for the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, have found that vetiver inhalation shifts the autonomic balance toward parasympathetic dominance. In practical terms, this means your body moves toward the rest-and-digest state rather than the fight-or-flight state. That shift is physiologically identical to what needs to happen for sleep onset.
Vetiver is also notable for its effect on attention. Some practitioners use it specifically for racing-thought insomnia, the kind where the mind will not quiet, rather than for physical tension or anxiety. The oil's heavy, grounding character seems to anchor scattered attention in a way that lighter oils do not.
For application, a single drop of vetiver diluted in a teaspoon of carrier oil applied to the inside of the wrists or the soles of the feet before bed is a common approach. In a diffuser, one or two drops is usually sufficient as the scent is very strong. Blending with bergamot lightens the scent profile considerably while maintaining the grounding quality.
Bergamot: Linalool in Citrus Form
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is the citrus fruit whose rind produces the oil that gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour. As an essential oil, bergamot is unusual because it contains significant amounts of linalool (also the primary active compound in lavender) as well as linalyl acetate, but in a citrus-scented package that many people find more accessible than floral lavender.
Linalool has several documented mechanisms of interest for sleep:
- GABA modulation: Linalool has been shown to act as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors in animal studies.
- Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) effects: Some research suggests linalool affects ATP-sensitive potassium channels, which play a role in neuronal excitability.
- Anxiety reduction: Multiple animal studies show anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects from linalool inhalation.
- Anti-inflammatory: Linalool has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in several in vitro studies.
Bergamot also contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes it phototoxic when applied topically. Bergapten is activated by UV light and can cause skin burns, blistering, and pigmentation changes if you apply bergamot to skin that will be exposed to sun. For this reason, always use bergapten-free (also called FCF, or furanocoumarin-free) bergamot for topical applications. For diffusion only, standard bergamot is fine since it is not applied to skin.
Bergamot's scent is bright, slightly floral, and citrusy. It works well in blends with vetiver (which it lightens considerably), with ylang ylang, and with sandalwood. A bergamot-vetiver blend is often cited as one of the more effective combinations for anxiety-driven insomnia.
Roman Chamomile: The Apigenin Pathway
Most people are familiar with chamomile tea as a sleep aid. The mechanism behind its mild sedative reputation is apigenin, a flavonoid that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain. Chamomile tea contains water-soluble apigenin. Roman chamomile essential oil (Chamaemelum nobile) concentrates the aromatic compounds of the plant, but the relationship between inhaled chamomile aromatics and apigenin activity is not direct. The oil does not contain apigenin itself.
Despite this, Roman chamomile essential oil has a documented sedative effect in animal studies, and clinical case reports and small trials in humans support its use for mild anxiety and sleep difficulty. The mechanism for the aromatherapy effect may involve different compounds than the tea mechanism: the esters (particularly isobutyl angelate and 2-methylbutyl angelate) appear to have their own sedative activity.
Roman chamomile has a sweet, apple-like, herbal scent. It is one of the more expensive essential oils available in Canada, as the yield from the plant is low. German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is a different oil with a blue colour from chamazulene and is more useful for topical anti-inflammatory applications than for sleep aromatherapy specifically.
For sleep use, Roman chamomile blends well with lavender and bergamot for a classic floral sleep blend, or with cedarwood and vetiver for a warmer, earthier profile.
Frankincense: Boswellic Acids and Cortisol
Frankincense essential oil is distilled from the resin of Boswellia trees, primarily Boswellia sacra (Omani frankincense) and Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense). The resin contains boswellic acids, which have been extensively studied for anti-inflammatory properties. The essential oil itself, however, contains very little of the boswellic acids since they are too large and heavy to distil into the steam-distilled oil.
What frankincense oil does contain is incensole acetate, a compound that crosses the blood-brain barrier and has been shown in mouse studies to activate TRPV3 channels in the brain, producing anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. A 2008 study published in the FASEB Journal (Moussaieff et al.) documented this mechanism and generated significant interest in frankincense for psychological applications.
Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, follows a diurnal rhythm: it should be highest in the morning and lowest in the evening. People with chronic stress, anxiety disorders, or HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis dysregulation often have elevated evening cortisol, which interferes with the body's ability to transition into sleep. Frankincense, through incensole acetate's effects on the limbic system, is theorised to reduce stress arousal and may thereby reduce evening cortisol. Direct human studies specifically measuring this effect are limited, but the mechanistic rationale is plausible.
Practically, frankincense has a warm, balsamic, slightly citrusy scent with a sacred or contemplative quality. Many people find it immediately calming in a way that is distinct from the sedative heaviness of vetiver: it is more like a mental quieting than a physical slowing. It is particularly popular for those who link stress and mental overactivity with their sleep problems rather than physical tension.
Frankincense blends well with cedarwood, bergamot, and sandalwood. It is one of the most tolerated oils for diffusion at higher concentrations and works well as a single-oil diffuser choice.
Ylang Ylang: Blood Pressure and Relaxation
Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) oil is extracted from the flowers of a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Its scent is intensely floral, sweet, and exotic. At low concentrations it is widely considered one of the most pleasant floral scents in aromatherapy; at high concentrations it can become overwhelming and even headache-inducing.
The sleep-relevant mechanism for ylang ylang is cardiovascular. A 2006 study by Hongratanaworakit and Buchbauer found that topical application of ylang ylang oil in a human study produced significant decreases in blood pressure and heart rate compared to a control group, while participants rated their mood as more calm and relaxed. This cardiovascular effect is relevant for sleep because elevated heart rate and blood pressure are markers of sympathetic nervous system activation, the opposite state from sleep readiness.
Ylang ylang contains linalool (shared with lavender and bergamot), geranyl acetate, and benzyl benzoate, among other compounds. The blood pressure effect appears to involve the parasympathetic nervous system directly.
For sleep application, the critical practical note is dosage. One to two drops in a diffuser is appropriate. Three or more drops often produces headache or nausea in sensitive individuals. Ylang ylang is best used in blends rather than alone at full diffuser concentrations: a classic combination is 2 drops bergamot, 1 drop ylang ylang, and 2 drops cedarwood for a balanced floral-woody sleep blend.
Topically, ylang ylang is well-tolerated at normal dilutions (2 to 3 percent in carrier oil) and is not phototoxic.
Carrier Oils: What to Use and Why
Essential oils are highly concentrated and should never be applied undiluted directly to skin. The risk is skin irritation, sensitisation (a reaction that worsens with subsequent exposures), and in some cases chemical burns. A carrier oil dilutes the essential oil to a safe concentration for skin application while also providing its own skin benefits and acting as the vehicle for absorption.
- Jojoba oil: Technically a liquid wax. Absorbs readily, has an extremely long shelf life (up to 5 years), is non-comedogenic, and has a very light skin feel. Excellent for face application (wrists, temples) since it does not clog pores. Widely available in Canadian health stores and online.
- Sweet almond oil: Rich in oleic and linoleic acids, good shelf life (1 to 2 years), moderate absorption, slightly nutty scent. Avoid with tree nut allergies. Good for body application (feet, chest).
- Fractionated coconut oil: Unlike whole coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil stays liquid at room temperature. Very long shelf life, light texture, rapid absorption, essentially scentless. Good all-purpose carrier for sleep blends.
- Rosehip seed oil: More expensive, high in vitamin A and essential fatty acids. Best for face application if skin benefits are a secondary goal. Shorter shelf life (6 to 12 months), store in the refrigerator.
Standard dilution for topical application in adults is 2 to 3 percent. This translates to 12 to 18 drops of essential oil per 30 mL (1 fluid ounce) of carrier oil. For facial application, a 1 percent dilution (6 drops per 30 mL) is more appropriate. For children over 6 years, a 1 percent dilution maximum is recommended. Essential oils should not be used on infants under 3 months, and caution is warranted up to 2 years.
Application Methods: Diffuser, Topical, Pillow Spray
The three main methods for using essential oils for sleep each have different practical profiles, and choosing the right method matters as much as choosing the right oil.
Ultrasonic diffuser: The most popular home method. An ultrasonic diffuser uses vibrations to disperse a fine mist of water and essential oil into the air. Run a diffuser 30 to 60 minutes before bed and turn it off when you sleep, or use an automatic timer. Running a diffuser all night is not generally recommended: olfactory adaptation (your brain stops registering the scent) reduces its effect, and prolonged exposure can be drying for some people. Add 4 to 8 drops of oil to the water reservoir depending on room size and the oil's strength. For a bedroom of 15 to 20 square metres, 5 drops is a typical starting point.
Topical application: Apply the diluted blend to pulse points (wrists, inside of elbows, behind knees), the soles of the feet, the chest, or the back of the neck. Pulse points are areas where blood vessels are close to the skin and the skin is thinner, which allows for faster absorption and warming of the oil, which in turn increases diffusion. The soles of the feet are a popular application point for sleep blends in reflexology tradition; the skin is thicker but absorption is still effective. Apply 30 to 45 minutes before bed.
Pillow spray: A water-based spray containing a small percentage of essential oils (and sometimes a solubiliser like polysorbate 20 to keep the oil from separating) applied to the pillow before sleep. This is the lowest-cost entry point for sleep aromatherapy and requires no special equipment. Commercial pillow sprays are widely available in Canada from brands like This Works (Night Oil pillow spray), Saje Natural Wellness (available in many Ontario cities including Brantford and Hamilton), and Vitruvi. A DIY version: 120 mL distilled water, 1 teaspoon polysorbate 20, 15 drops essential oil of choice in a small spray bottle. Shake before each use.
- Always dilute before topical application. No exceptions for any oil.
- Keep essential oils away from children and pets. Many oils are toxic to cats (especially tea tree, eucalyptus, and some citrus oils) and dogs at higher concentrations.
- Bergamot is phototoxic unless it is FCF (furanocoumarin-free). Do not apply standard bergamot to skin before sun exposure.
- Consult your pharmacist if you are on anticoagulants, antidepressants, or sedative medications before using essential oils therapeutically.
- Pregnancy: many essential oils are contraindicated or should be used with caution. Consult your midwife or obstetrician.
- Quality matters. Look for 100% pure essential oils from reputable Canadian suppliers. Price alone is not a reliable quality indicator, but very inexpensive oils ($3 to $5 per 10 mL) are almost certainly adulterated.
Your Sleep Environment Matters Too
Essential oils are one layer of a healthy sleep environment, not a substitute for addressing the fundamentals. If your mattress is causing pain, overheating you, or creating motion disturbance that wakes you or your partner, no amount of vetiver and bergamot will fully compensate.
