Quick Answer: GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) is a neurotransmitter that calms the brain. For insomnia, typical supplement doses range from 100mg to 750mg taken one hour before bed. It works best for "racing mind" insomnia (anxiety) rather than physical restlessness. Start low (100mg) to test for side effects like tingling or shortness of breath.

Reading Time: 4 minutes
You lay in bed, but your brain won't shut up. You are planning tomorrow's dinner, worrying about an email, and replaying a conversation from 2012.
This is "racing mind" insomnia. It happens when your brain's excitatory neurotransmitters (like glutamate) are overactive. You need to hit the brakes.
GABA is that brake pedal. At Mattress Miracle, we often hear customers ask about "natural Valium." While we aren't doctors, understanding how GABA works can help you decide if it's the missing link in your sleep hygiene.
The Brain's Brake Pedal
GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human brain. Its job is to reduce the activity of nerve cells. It calms you down.
Low levels of GABA are linked to:
- Anxiety
- Chronic stress
- Insomnia (specifically difficulty falling asleep)
- Depression
Many prescription sleep aids (like Ambien or Xanax) work by artificially increasing GABA activity. Taking a GABA supplement attempts to do this naturally.
The Absorption Problem

There is a catch. Your brain has a security system called the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB). It keeps foreign substances out.
Synthetic GABA supplements struggle to cross this barrier. If you take a pill, most of it might stay in your body (relaxing muscles) without ever reaching your brain (relaxing thoughts).
This is why some people swear by it, and others say it does nothing. It depends on your individual "leaky" brain barrier.
How Much Should You Take?
Because absorption is poor, doses tend to be high compared to melatonin.
Standard Protocol:
- Start: 100mg to 200mg.
- Standard: 500mg to 750mg is the most common dose in successful sleep studies.
- Max: Do not exceed 3,000mg per day.
Timing: Take it 30-60 minutes before bed. Unlike melatonin (which needs 90 minutes), GABA acts relatively quickly once absorbed.
Why It Works Better with Magnesium

Since GABA struggles to get into the brain alone, it works best with a partner.
Magnesium binds to GABA receptors, making them more receptive. Taking Magnesium Glycinate with GABA is a powerful combination. The magnesium relaxes the body, and the GABA quiets the mind.
L-Theanine (from green tea) also increases natural GABA production in the brain. A supplement containing GABA + L-Theanine + Magnesium is often more effective than GABA alone.
The "Anxiety" Mattress
If your mind is racing because you are uncomfortable, GABA won't fix it. Physical pain triggers cortisol, which overrides GABA. If you can't get comfortable, your mattress is the problem. A pressure-relieving Restonic Hybrid calms the physical nerves so the GABA can calm the mental ones.

Call 519-770-0001What are the side effects?
At high doses, some people report a "tingling" or flushing sensation in the skin, or mild shortness of breath. This usually passes quickly but can be scary. Start with a low dose.
Can I take it with melatonin?
Yes. They work on different systems (GABA = relaxation, Melatonin = timing). Taking them together can address both "racing mind" and "wrong schedule" insomnia simultaneously.
Does alcohol increase GABA?
Yes, temporarily. That is why alcohol relaxes you. But prolonged use depletes natural GABA, leading to "hangxiety" (anxiety during a hangover) and worse insomnia long-term.
Is it safe for daily use?
Generally yes, for up to 3 months. Long-term safety hasn't been studied extensively. We recommend using it to break a cycle of insomnia, then tapering off once your sleep pattern is re-established.
