The Human Record and Fatal Sleep Deprivation
Randy Gardner, a 17-year-old from San Diego, stayed awake for 11 days and 24 minutes in 1964 under medical supervision. By day 11, he experienced hallucinations, paranoid thinking, and extreme cognitive impairment. He recovered with approximately 14 hours of sleep initially, then returned to normal sleep patterns within days. No permanent neurological damage was documented.
Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is an extremely rare hereditary prion disease that causes progressive inability to sleep, leading to death within months. This is a neurological disease, not an extreme of voluntary deprivation.
In animal research, rats deprived of all sleep die within 2-3 weeks. The mechanism in humans under total voluntary deprivation is unknown, no modern research has pushed subjects to this limit.
