The Sleep Cycle: How the Night Unfolds
Sleep is not a single uniform state. Your brain passes through distinct stages in a repeating cycle throughout the night. One complete cycle, from light sleep through deep sleep and into REM, takes approximately 90 minutes. A full 7.5–9 hour night produces five to six complete cycles.
The distribution of sleep stages is not even across the night. Deep sleep (NREM Stage 3) dominates the first half of the night. REM sleep becomes longer with each cycle and dominates the final hours before waking. This is why a full night of sleep feels qualitatively different from a short one, cutting sleep short doesn't just lose hours, it disproportionately loses REM sleep from the end of the night.
Stage 1: Light Sleep (NREM 1)
Stage 1 is the transition between wakefulness and sleep. It lasts only a few minutes and is characterized by slowing brain waves, eye movements, and muscle activity. You're aware of your environment but no longer fully conscious. This is the stage where hypnic jerks, the sudden twitching sensation that jolts you awake, commonly occur.
Stage 1 accounts for only 5–10% of total sleep time in a healthy adult. It's easily disrupted, any significant noise or discomfort can return you to wakefulness from Stage 1.
Stage 2: Consolidated Sleep (NREM 2)
Stage 2 is where you spend the majority of your sleeping hours, approximately 45–55% of total sleep time. Brain waves slow further but are punctuated by brief bursts of activity called sleep spindles. Body temperature drops, heart rate slows, and the brain begins disconnecting from external stimuli.
Stage 2 is important for motor learning and procedural memory, skills and movement patterns practiced during the day are consolidated during NREM Stage 2 sleep. It's also the stage targeted by the "NASA nap", a 20-minute nap that gets you restorative sleep without entering deep sleep, avoiding the grogginess of waking from Stage 3.
Stage 3: Deep Sleep (Slow Wave Sleep)
NREM Stage 3 is the most physically restorative sleep stage. Also called slow wave sleep or delta sleep, it's characterized by the lowest brain wave activity of any sleep stage. It's hardest to wake from, someone in deep sleep may not respond to sounds or movement that would easily rouse them from lighter stages.
Adults spend approximately 15–20% of total sleep time in deep sleep, with the concentration in the first two or three sleep cycles of the night. Deep sleep decreases with age, older adults naturally spend less time in Stage 3, which is one reason physical recovery from exercise and illness takes longer with age.

REM Sleep: Dreams and Memory Consolidation
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is the most cognitively active sleep stage. The name comes from the rapid darting of the eyes beneath closed eyelids, visible externally. Brain activity during REM is similar to wakefulness, this is when most vivid dreaming occurs.
The body experiences a form of temporary paralysis during REM, called REM atonia, that prevents acting out dreams. REM disruptions are associated with several sleep disorders including REM sleep behaviour disorder, where this paralysis mechanism fails.
REM sleep's primary functions:
- Emotional memory processing: The brain replays emotional experiences during REM, stripping away some of the emotional charge, this is why time (and sleep) helps process difficult experiences
- Associative memory: REM connects new information to existing knowledge in novel ways, associated with creative insight and problem-solving
- Procedural memory consolidation: REM also contributes to skill consolidation, complementing Stage 2's role
REM sleep increases in duration through the night, first REM periods last 10–20 minutes, while final REM periods can last 30–60 minutes. What Disrupts Your Sleep Stages
- Alcohol: Suppresses REM sleep, particularly in the first half of the night. Creates rebound REM in the second half that's more fragmented and disrupted.
- Caffeine (late in the day): Blocks adenosine receptors, delaying sleep onset and suppressing deep sleep quality even when you can fall asleep.
- An uncomfortable mattress: Pressure points and spinal misalignment cause micro-arousals, brief returns to lighter sleep, that interrupt deep and REM stages without you fully waking. People often don't know this is happening until they replace the mattress and notice the difference.
- Light and noise: Light suppresses melatonin. Noise causes arousals, particularly from lighter sleep stages.
