Why Mattress Stains Are Harder to Remove Than You Think
Pull back the sheets on a mattress that has been in use for a year or two and you will almost certainly find staining of some kind. Pale yellow patches near where a person sleeps, faint brown rings, the occasional mystery mark near the foot of the bed. Most people cover them back up and move on. That approach works until it does not -- until the stain smells, until a guest notices, or until you are trying to sell or donate a mattress that looks neglected.
The reason mattress stains resist ordinary cleaning is straightforward: the foam and fibre layers beneath the fabric act like a sponge. Liquid wicks downward through the cover fabric and into the comfort layer before you even realise a spill has happened. Once inside the foam, moisture sits in a warm, dark environment where bacteria and organic compounds break down over time. The result is discolouration that is partly chemical and partly biological, and it does not respond to the same approach you would use on a cotton shirt.
This guide focuses on the removal process itself, with sweat stains as the central example because they are by far the most common type. Sweat stains share chemistry with blood and urine -- all three are protein-based stains -- so the methods described here apply across that whole category. Sweat contains small amounts of protein, and as those proteins are exposed to oxygen and heat (your body heat, the warmth of a closed bedroom), they undergo oxidation and turn a progressively darker yellow or amber colour. This is the same process that turns an old white cotton undershirt yellowish under the arms.
The second process involves uric acid. Uric acid is a waste compound excreted through sweat as well as urine. When it dries and sits on fabric, it bonds chemically with the fibres. The longer it sits, the stronger that bond becomes. A fresh sweat stain that has been on a mattress for two weeks is meaningfully harder to remove than one that has been there for two days. One that has been setting for six months is in a different category entirely -- it will require multiple treatments and may leave a faint shadow even after thorough cleaning.
Understanding this chemistry matters because it tells you what cleaner to reach for. A general-purpose cleaner or dish soap dissolves grease and food residue but does nothing to break the protein bonds that hold a sweat stain in place. You need something that targets protein specifically.
The Enzymatic Approach: Why It Works on Protein-Based Stains
Enzymatic cleaners contain biological enzymes -- protease in particular -- that are designed to break down protein molecules into smaller fragments. This is not a surface-level cleaning action. The enzymes actually digest the proteins, dismantling the molecular structure that causes both the staining and the odour.
This matters for three stain types that people frequently deal with on mattresses:
- Sweat stains -- protein and uric acid, responds well to protease enzymes combined with a mild acid like white vinegar
- Blood stains -- almost entirely protein (haemoglobin), very responsive to enzymatic cleaners when treated cold (heat sets blood permanently)
- Urine stains -- protein, uric acid, and ammonia compounds; requires enzymatic treatment plus odour neutralisation
Commercial enzymatic cleaners designed for pet stains work effectively on all three because they were formulated precisely for this protein-plus-uric-acid combination. Products like Nature's Miracle, BioKleen Bac-Out, or similar enzyme-based formulas available at Canadian hardware stores are appropriate choices. One important caution: enzymatic cleaners need time to work. Unlike a detergent that acts on contact, enzymes require a dwell period -- typically 10 to 15 minutes at minimum, and often longer for set-in stains. Spraying and immediately blotting is the single most common mistake people make when attempting this kind of cleaning.
Before You Start: Supplies Checklist
Gather everything before you strip the bed, because once you start the process you do not want to leave a wet mattress unattended while you search for supplies.
- Cold water in a spray bottle (important -- never hot water on protein stains)
- White vinegar (distilled, not apple cider) in a second spray bottle
- Baking soda (at least one 500g box per stain area)
- Enzymatic cleaner -- commercial product or a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide (3%) and water
- Clean white cloths or paper towels -- enough to blot generously
- Mild dish soap (a few drops only)
- A soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush for working solutions in
- A fan or access to a window for drying
A note on hydrogen peroxide: 3% food-grade or pharmacy hydrogen peroxide is safe for most mattress covers. Do not use higher concentrations. Test on an inconspicuous area first, as hydrogen peroxide can lighten some coloured fabrics. For white or light-coloured mattress covers it works extremely well and doubles as a mild disinfectant.
Step-by-Step: Removing Fresh Sweat Stains (Under 2 Weeks Old)
Step 1 -- Strip and Assess (5 minutes)
Remove all bedding and mattress protectors. Examine the stain in good light. Fresh sweat stains will appear pale yellow or faintly grey. Check whether the staining extends through the cover to the foam layer by pressing lightly on the stained area -- if it still feels slightly damp, liquid has penetrated deeper and you will need to address the interior as well as the surface.
Step 2 -- Blot Up Any Surface Moisture (5 minutes)
If the stain is recent (same day or the day before), use a clean dry cloth to blot up as much surface moisture as possible. Press firmly, lift, move to a clean section of the cloth, repeat. Do not rub -- rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fabric fibres and spreads it laterally. Blot only.
Step 3 -- Apply Cold Water and Blot Again (5 minutes)
Lightly mist the stained area with cold water. The goal is to dilute the remaining proteins without soaking the foam. Blot again with a clean cloth. You are flushing the loosened material upward and out of the fabric, not driving it further in. Cold water is essential here -- warm or hot water will partially cook the proteins and set the stain permanently.
Step 4 -- Apply Enzymatic Solution and Wait (15-20 minutes)
Spray your enzymatic cleaner or hydrogen peroxide solution generously over the stain. You want the fabric to be damp but not soaked -- if liquid is pooling, you have used too much. Work the solution gently into the fabric with your soft brush using small circular motions. Then stop. Set a timer for 15 minutes and leave the solution undisturbed. This dwell time is when the actual cleaning happens.
Step 5 -- Add a Few Drops of Dish Soap and Work Gently (5 minutes)
After the dwell period, add two or three drops of dish soap to the area. Use your brush or cloth to work it in lightly. The soap helps lift the material that the enzymes have broken down. Blot with a clean damp cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading.
Step 6 -- White Vinegar Rinse (5 minutes)
Spray a light mist of white vinegar over the cleaned area. Vinegar is mildly acidic and serves two purposes: it neutralises any alkaline residue from the cleaning process, and it continues to break down uric acid compounds. Blot dry with a clean cloth. The vinegar smell will dissipate completely as the mattress dries -- do not be alarmed by it.
Step 7 -- Baking Soda Deodourising (minimum 8 hours)
Once you have blotted up as much liquid as possible, cover the entire treated area generously with dry baking soda. Spread it at least 1 cm thick. Baking soda draws moisture out of the foam and fabric through osmosis while simultaneously neutralising acidic odour compounds. Leave it for a minimum of 8 hours -- overnight is better. The longer it sits, the more moisture and odour it pulls out.
Step 8 -- Vacuum and Dry (30+ minutes)
Vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly using the upholstery attachment. Then position a fan blowing across the mattress surface and leave it to dry completely before replacing any bedding. Depending on how wet the mattress got during cleaning, this may take 2 to 4 hours. The mattress must be completely dry before you put sheets back on -- a slightly damp mattress under sealed bedding creates exactly the conditions that allow mould to develop.
Step-by-Step: Removing Old, Set-In Sweat Stains (Weeks to Months Old)
Set-in stains require a modified approach. The protein bonds have had time to oxidise and cross-link with fabric fibres, so a single treatment cycle is rarely sufficient. Plan for two to three treatment rounds and give yourself a full day for the process.
First Treatment Round
Begin with the white vinegar spray. Old sweat stains have a high concentration of dried uric acid, and the acid in vinegar begins to dissolve it before the enzymatic cleaner is applied. Spray the stain liberally, let it sit for 5 minutes, then blot dry.
Now apply your enzymatic cleaner and extend the dwell time to 30 minutes. For commercial enzymatic products, cover the wet area with a clean damp cloth while it dwells -- this keeps the enzymes from drying out before they have finished working. After 30 minutes, blot clean, apply the dish soap, blot again, then do the vinegar rinse.
Cover with baking soda and leave overnight.
Second Treatment Round (Following Day)
Vacuum the baking soda. Assess the stain. Old stains often show significant improvement but not complete removal after one round. The remaining discolouration is usually the oxidised protein residue that the enzymes did not fully break down on the first pass.
For this round, mix a paste of baking soda, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, and a drop of dish soap to the consistency of toothpaste. Apply it directly to the remaining discolouration, work it gently into the fabric with your brush, and let it dry completely in place -- approximately 2 hours. As it dries, the hydrogen peroxide continues oxidising the protein residue, and the baking soda lifts and traps it. Once dry, vacuum away the paste.
Repeat the baking soda powder application overnight if any odour remains.
What to Expect After Two Rounds
Most sweat stains -- even ones several months old -- will be reduced to barely visible or invisible after two treatment rounds. Stains that have been setting for a year or more may leave a faint shadow in the fabric that does not fully disappear regardless of treatment. This is the oxidised protein bonded at a deep level to the textile fibres. The odour, however, should be eliminated entirely even when a faint visual trace remains.
Handling Blood Stains: The Same Family, Different Rules
Blood stains respond to the same enzymatic approach, but with one critical difference: cold water only, at every stage. Haemoglobin (the protein in blood) begins to coagulate -- essentially cook -- at temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius. Hot or warm water applied to a blood stain will set it permanently in minutes.
For fresh blood: blot immediately with cold water, apply enzymatic cleaner with a 15-minute dwell, blot clean, apply hydrogen peroxide if any discolouration remains (it will fizz, which is normal -- that is the enzymatic reaction with the blood protein). Blot, rinse cold, baking soda overnight.
For dried blood: the cold-water-first rule still applies. Soak the stain with cold water, let it rehydrate for 5 minutes, then proceed with the enzymatic treatment. Dried blood often requires two rounds as well.
Handling Urine Stains: Odour Is the Real Challenge
Urine stains are common on mattresses in households with young children, elderly family members, or pets. The staining itself responds to enzymatic treatment, but the odour requires specific attention because urine contains ammonia compounds that ordinary cleaning does not neutralise.
After the enzymatic cleaning process, a thorough baking soda application is more important for urine than for sweat -- leave it for a minimum of 12 hours. If odour persists after one full treatment cycle, a commercial enzymatic odour eliminator (specifically labelled for urine) applied directly and allowed to dry in place is usually effective.
Avoid ammonia-based cleaners on urine stains. Ammonia smells similar to one of urine's breakdown products and can actually attract animals back to the same spot, creating a cycle. Vinegar plus enzymatic cleaner is the appropriate combination.
Sweat Stain Prevention: A Seasonal Calendar
Prevention is significantly less work than removal. The following calendar works for the Ontario climate, where humid summers create the highest sweat-staining risk.
Spring (March to May)
- Wash and replace your mattress protector. If it shows any yellowing or smell, this is the moment to replace it entirely -- a protector that has absorbed a season of sweat is degraded and provides less protection.
- Wash all pillow protectors. The average person loses up to 500ml of moisture through their head and face overnight. Pillow protectors intercept that moisture before it reaches the pillow and mattress.
- Rotate your mattress (if non-pillow-top) to distribute wear patterns.
- Open bedroom windows for at least 30 minutes per day to reduce ambient humidity as temperatures rise.
Summer (June to August)
- This is the highest-risk season. Night sweating increases with heat, and the mattress absorbs more moisture per night than any other time of year.
- Use lightweight, breathable bedding -- linen or cotton percale rather than microfibre, which traps heat and promotes sweating.
- Run a dehumidifier if your bedroom humidity exceeds 50%. High humidity slows evaporation, keeping sweat in the mattress longer and accelerating staining.
- If you do not use a mattress protector in winter, start using one in June at the latest.
- Mid-summer (late July): inspect your mattress protector. If it has yellowed or developed odour after just two months, it is doing its job -- but it may need washing or replacement mid-season rather than waiting until fall.
Autumn (September to November)
- Deep clean the mattress before closing windows for winter. Strip the bed, vacuum the entire mattress surface, and inspect for any staining that developed over summer.
- Address any stains now rather than letting them set through the winter. Summer sweat stains caught in September are still relatively fresh and respond to single-round treatment.
- Wash or replace mattress and pillow protectors.
- Air the mattress for several hours with windows open before putting winter bedding back on.
Winter (December to February)
- Lower risk for sweat staining, but indoor heating reduces humidity, which can dry out foam layers and make them more brittle over time.
- Maintain bedroom temperature at or below 19 degrees Celsius at night -- cooler sleeping temperatures reduce sweating and improve sleep quality.
- If you use a heated mattress pad, ensure the mattress protector is in place underneath it. Heated pads increase perspiration significantly.
- Annual inspection: in January or February, strip the bed completely and examine the protector and mattress surface under good light.
The Role of Mattress Protectors in Sweat Management
A properly fitted, waterproof mattress protector does not just block spills. It intercepts the slow accumulation of sweat, dead skin cells, and body oils that produce the yellowing and odour that develops on unprotected mattresses over time. A good protector means that your mattress surface -- the expensive part -- stays clean indefinitely.
Not all protectors are equal in this regard. A thin cotton quilted protector absorbs moisture but does not block it from reaching the mattress. What you want is a protector with a waterproof membrane layer (usually polyurethane or TPU laminate) sandwiched between breathable fabric layers. These block liquid penetration while remaining comfortable to sleep on.

Practical ventilation steps that make a meaningful difference:
- Do not make the bed immediately upon waking. Leave the sheets and duvet pulled back for 20 to 30 minutes so body heat and moisture can escape before the bed is sealed again.
- Choose a bed frame or foundation that allows airflow underneath the mattress. Solid platform bases without slats trap moisture between the mattress and the base.
- Air out the mattress at least twice a year by removing all bedding and leaving it uncovered for several hours, ideally in a room with open windows or a fan running.
- Keep bedroom humidity between 40 and 50 percent. A hygrometer (available at most hardware stores for under $20) makes this easy to monitor.
When to Accept That a Stain Will Not Fully Lift
Some stains cannot be fully removed. A mattress that has had years of unprotected use, with multiple layers of sweat accumulation, oxidised protein staining throughout the cover fabric, and possible mould development in the foam layers, has reached a point where surface cleaning addresses only the top layer of a deep problem.
Signs that cleaning is not sufficient and replacement should be considered:
- Persistent odour that returns even after complete treatment cycles -- this usually indicates that the foam layers themselves are saturated with bacteria and organic material
- Structural sagging or body impressions exceeding 3 to 4 cm in depth -- the mattress has lost its support regardless of cleanliness
- Visible mould growth on any surface -- mould in a mattress cannot be safely remediated and the mattress should be discarded
- Staining or odour that worsened sharply after a major spill (urine, vomit, large beverage spill) that penetrated deeply into the foam
A mattress has a typical lifespan of 8 to 10 years with proper care, and somewhat less without a protector. If a mattress is approaching that age range and showing the above signs, the cleaning investment of time and product is better directed toward a new mattress with a protector in place from day one.
