This article is for the next stage: the stain that partially responded to initial treatment but has not cleared, or the old stain discovered months after it happened. The same chemistry applies, but with more aggressive versions of the tools.
This is also the article that handles expectations honestly. Some period stains -- particularly very old ones where both the blood haemoglobin and the endometrial tissue proteins have fully set -- cannot be completely removed. Knowing this before you spend two hours on repeated treatments saves frustration.
Why Your First Attempt May Not Have Worked
Several reasons cause initial period stain treatment to fall short:
- The stain had already dried. Dried menstrual blood contains oxidised haemoglobin (haematin) that has bonded to fabric fibres, cross-linked fibrin, and denatured endometrial proteins. These require more chemical work than fresh blood.
- The enzyme cleaner dwell time was too short. A 5-minute application is rarely sufficient for a set period stain. The mixed protein composition (haemoglobin, collagen from endometrial tissue, glycoproteins from cervical mucus) requires extended enzyme contact.
- Warm or hot water was used. Even once. This denatures proteins and bonds them permanently to fabric, making subsequent treatment less effective regardless of what products you use.
- The hydrogen peroxide was old. Hydrogen peroxide loses oxidising power over months after opening. A bottle that has been in the cabinet for a year may produce little or no reaction on a stain.
