You have a blood stain on your mattress and you need to deal with it now. You do not have time to go to the store. Here is what you can do with items almost every household has -- organised by what you have available, from the most basic to slightly more equipped.
The single rule that applies to every method here: use cold water only. Hot water permanently sets blood stains by denaturing haemoglobin, the protein that gives blood its colour. Once heat-set, almost nothing will shift it. Cold keeps the haemoglobin soluble so it can be blotted and lifted.
What You Can Do With Just Cold Water
Cold water alone is the first and most important step for any blood stain, and for very fresh stains it may be nearly sufficient on its own.
- Blot first. Before applying any water, blot the wet stain with a dry cloth to absorb as much blood as possible. Press firmly and lift straight up. Use a fresh section of cloth each time -- a cloth already saturated with blood just redistributes it.
- Apply cold water to a clean cloth and blot the stained area. Do not pour water directly onto the mattress -- you want to work with the minimum moisture necessary to avoid soaking the foam.

- Apply the paste generously over the stained area.
- Leave for 20--30 minutes. Do not disturb it while it works.
- Blot away with a clean cold damp cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward.
- Repeat with a fresh application of cold water blotting until the cloth comes away clean.

What You Can Do With Water and Dish Soap

- Test first. Apply a small drop to an inconspicuous area of the mattress cover (the edge, near the bottom) and wait 5 minutes. Hydrogen peroxide can slightly lighten some dyed fabrics. On white or off-white covers, this is rarely a visible concern.
- Apply to the stain. Pour a small amount directly onto the dried blood stain, or apply with a cloth. Do not oversaturate -- excess peroxide penetrating into foam can degrade foam materials over time.
- Allow the fizzing reaction. Let it bubble for 1--2 minutes. Do not wipe immediately -- the reaction needs time to break down the pigment.

- Press a dry towel firmly into the treated area after blotting -- absorb as much surface moisture as possible.
- Direct a fan at the treated area. If possible, open a window or door to increase air circulation.

I only have warm water. Can I use it?
No -- do not use warm or hot water on a blood stain under any circumstances. If cold tap water is not available, use the coldest water you have. Even lukewarm water significantly increases the risk of setting the stain. If the water feels warm to the touch, let it run until it cools down before using it.
Will the stain come out completely with just household items?
If the stain is fresh (within the last hour or two), cold water plus salt has a good chance of removing it entirely.
