The most important thing for allergy sufferers is not the mattress material, it is the mattress protector. A zippered allergen-proof encasement blocks dust mites, pet dander, and mould from accumulating inside any mattress. That said, latex and memory foam mattresses are naturally more resistant to dust mites than innerspring (coils create air pockets where dust mites thrive). Avoid pillow-top and thick fiberfill layers that trap allergens. Wash bedding weekly in hot water (60C+). A good protector plus regular cleaning matters more than any "hypoallergenic" marketing label.

Common Bedroom Allergens

Your mattress is a breeding ground for allergens. The average mattress contains 100,000 to 10 million dust mites after 2 years. Dust mite waste is the primary bedroom allergen, triggering sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and asthma. Other mattress allergens include: mould and mildew (from body moisture), pet dander (transfers from bedding), and chemical off-gassing (from new foam mattresses).
Why Dust Mites Love Your Bed
Dust mites feed on human skin cells (you shed 1.5 grams per night) and thrive in warm, humid environments (exactly what a mattress provides). They do not bite. The allergen is their fecal matter and body fragments, which become airborne when you move in bed. A single dust mite produces 20 waste droppings per day. With millions of mites, the allergen load is significant. You cannot eliminate them entirely, but you can dramatically reduce their numbers with the right mattress, protector, and cleaning routine.
Best Mattress Materials for Allergies
Material Comparison for Allergy Sufferers
Natural latex (Best): Naturally antimicrobial and dust-mite resistant. The dense structure does not provide air pockets for mites. Naturally hypoallergenic. Note: some people are allergic to latex itself (rare, about 1-2% of population).
Memory foam (Good): Dense foam structure resists dust mites better than innerspring. No air pockets for mites to colonize. However, new memory foam can off-gas VOCs that irritate sensitive people. Look for CertiPUR-US certified foams.
Hybrid (Good with protector): Coil layer provides some air circulation (good for mould prevention) but also creates spaces for dust mites. A good protector is
essential with hybrids.
Innerspring (Least recommended): Open coil structure creates an ideal habitat for dust mites. Air moves freely through the mattress, circulating allergens. Requires an excellent encasement protector.
Protection Strategies That Actually Work
- Zippered encasement protector: Covers all 6 sides of the mattress. Traps existing allergens inside and prevents new ones from entering. Must be allergen-proof (pore size under 6 microns). Wash every 1-2 months. This is the single most effective intervention
- Pillow encasements: Same concept for pillows. Dust mites colonize pillows even faster than mattresses. Zippered, allergen-proof
- Hot water washing: Wash all bedding weekly in water at least 60C (140F). This kills dust mites. Cold or warm water does not kill them
- Humidity control: Keep bedroom humidity below 50%. Dust mites cannot survive below 40% humidity. A dehumidifier in humid Canadian summers makes a real difference
- HEPA vacuum: Vacuum the mattress surface monthly with a HEPA-filter vacuum. Regular vacuums can spread allergens through their exhaust
The Marketing Truth
Many mattresses marketed as "hypoallergenic" are simply memory foam or latex with a premium price tag. The material itself matters less than how you protect and maintain it. An $800 mattress with a $50 allergen-proof encasement will be more hypoallergenic than a $2000 "hypoallergenic" mattress without a protector. At Mattress Miracle, we focus on practical allergy solutions: the right mattress material for your sleep position plus proper protection. No marketing gimmicks.

Can I be allergic to my mattress?
You are almost certainly allergic to dust mites living in your mattress, not the mattress itself. True mattress material allergies are rare (latex allergy affects 1-2% of people). If allergies worsen at night and improve during the day, dust mites are the likely culprit.
How often should allergy sufferers replace mattresses?
Every 7-8 years, slightly sooner than the general 7-10 year guideline. Even with a protector, some allergens accumulate over time. When you replace, immediately put an encasement on the new mattress before the first night of sleep.
Are organic mattresses better for allergies?
Organic mattresses avoid synthetic chemicals and may have fewer off-gassing issues. Natural latex is genuinely antimicrobial. However, organic does not mean dust-mite-proof. You still need a protector and regular cleaning regardless of how the mattress is made.
Does freezing kill dust mites?
Yes, but it is impractical for a mattress. Freezing works for stuffed animals and small items (24 hours in the freezer kills mites). For your mattress, focus on encasement protectors, hot water washing of bedding, and humidity control.
