Quick Answer: Insomnia in the first trimester is caused by a massive spike in progesterone (which makes you tired but fragments sleep) and the frequent need to urinate. Nausea ("morning sickness") often strikes at night on an empty stomach. The fix? Eat a protein snack before bed, nap often, and start side-sleeping early.
Brad, Owner since 1987: "We have been helping Brantford families sleep better since 1987. Every customer gets personal attention, honest advice, and the kind of follow-up service you just do not get from big box stores."
Reading Time: 4 minutes
You just found out you're pregnant. You expected to be glowing. Instead, you are a zombie.
At Mattress Miracle, we see many newly pregnant women who are confused. "I thought the sleepless nights came after the baby was born," they say.
First-trimester insomnia is real, common, and cruel. It hits you when your body is doing the hardest work of building the placenta.
Why You Are Tired But Awake
Progesterone levels skyrocket in early pregnancy. This hormone is a natural sedative, which is why you feel like you could sleep for 14 hours a day.
However, progesterone also:
- Increases daytime sleepiness (napping ruins night sleep).
- Relaxes smooth muscles, leading to more frequent bathroom trips.
- Causes vivid, intense dreams that can wake you up.
So you are chemically exhausted, but physically unable to stay asleep.
Managing Nighttime Sickness
"Morning Sickness" is a lie. It is "All Day Sickness."
Nausea often gets worse at night because your stomach is empty. Gastric acid builds up, and blood sugar drops.
The Fix: Keep a stash of plain crackers or almonds on your nightstand. If you wake up queasy at 3 a.m., eat two crackers. This absorbs the acid and stabilizes blood sugar without forcing you to get out of bed.
The 2 a.m. Wake Up Call
Your uterus hasn't grown much yet, so why do you have to pee so much?
Increased blood flow to the kidneys. Your body is filtering for two. This increased filtration rate means your bladder fills faster.
The Fix: Front-load your hydration. Drink most of your water before 6 p.m. Sip, don't chug, in the evening.
Survival Tips for Weeks 6-12
You can't change the hormones, but you can change the routine.
1. Embrace the Nap:
Progesterone demands rest. If you are tired at 4 p.m., sleep for 20 minutes. It is not "lazy"; it is biological necessity.
2. Cool Down:
Your basal body temperature is higher now. If your bedroom is 22°C, it is too hot. Drop it to 18°C. A cooling mattress protector can also help wick away the hormonal night sweats.
3. Start Side Sleeping:
You don't have to sleep on your side yet (the baby is tiny), but training yourself now is easier than learning at week 20. Use a body pillow to get used to the position.
The "Bed" Test
If your mattress is sagging, the extra sensitivity of pregnancy will make you feel every lump. Brad recommends upgrading your bed early in the pregnancy so you get 9 months of good sleep, rather than waiting until you are in pain.

Call 519-770-0001Can I take melatonin?
There is not enough safety data to recommend it. Stick to magnesium (if approved by your doctor) and lifestyle changes. Don't risk supplements in the first trimester when development is most critical.
Is it bad to sleep on my stomach?
In the first trimester, it is safe. Your uterus is protected by the pelvic bone. However, sore breasts often make it uncomfortable anyway.
Why are my dreams so crazy?
Hormones plus fragmented sleep. Because you are waking up to pee every 2 hours, you are more likely to wake up during a dream, which helps you remember it. The intense emotions of pregnancy also fuel vivid dreaming.
Does exercise help?
Yes, gentle exercise (walking, swimming) helps process the excess hormones and tires the body physically, leading to deeper sleep.
