At highway speed, a 3-second microsleep covers roughly 100 metres of road. At 120 km/h on the 401, that is the length of a football field with nobody driving.

Microsleeps are most likely to occur during monotonous tasks that do not require active decision-making, which describes Ontario highway driving almost perfectly. The stretch of the 401 from London to Toronto, or Highway 400 from Barrie north, is designed for steady-state driving with minimal cognitive demand. Microsleep risk is not constant throughout the day. It peaks during two circadian windows: 2-4 a.m. (which most people avoid by not driving at night) and 1-3 p.m. (the post-lunch dip, which millions of drivers pass through every day). A 2010 review in Accident Analysis and Prevention found that single-vehicle crashes on monotonous highways peak during these same windows, confirming the circadian link.

The problem is timing. A child who naps from 2-4 p.m. during the drive has discharged a significant portion of their sleep pressure for the evening. At bedtime, they are not tired enough to fall asleep in an unfamiliar environment that already has them on edge.

If possible, plan the drive to overlap with their normal nap time and limit it to that duration. A child who naps from 1-2 p.m. in the car, the same as they would at home, arrives with their sleep pressure roughly intact. A child who naps from 1-4 p.m. because the drive was long arrives with a bedtime problem.

For school-age children who do not nap, screen time during the drive can create its own issue. Four hours of tablet use during a road trip followed by dinner at the destination and more screen time in an unfamiliar rental means their melatonin suppression is substantial by evening. Audiobooks and car games are better alternatives for the final 2 hours of the drive.

The Mattress at Your Destination

Hotel and rental mattresses are famously unpredictable. You might get a nearly new pillow-top or a decade-old slab that has absorbed the sleep of a thousand strangers. You have no control over this, but you do have some mitigation strategies.

Bring your own pillow. This is the single most effective thing you can do for destination sleep quality. Your pillow carries familiar scent, shape, and support that your brain recognizes as "home."
