Mattress Clearance in Brantford: How to Find Real Deals and What to Inspect

Clearance mattresses are the least understood corner of the mattress market. Most people assume "clearance" means something is wrong with the mattress. Stained, damaged, returned by a dissatisfied customer. That assumption is usually wrong, and it costs people money.

The reality is that most clearance mattresses are in excellent condition. They are on clearance for business reasons: a model was updated, a floor sample needs to make room for new inventory, or a size is being discontinued. The mattress itself is fine. The timing just changed.

But not all clearance mattresses are equal. Some are genuine deals. Some are retailer tricks to move low-quality stock. This guide teaches you how to tell the difference, with a specific inspection checklist you can use at any store in Brantford.

Three Types of Clearance Mattresses

Type 1: Floor models

A floor model has been on the showroom floor for customers to test. People lay on it for 5 to 15 minutes at a time, usually in their street clothes. The mattress has never been slept on overnight, never had sheets on it, and has not supported a body for more than brief testing periods.

At Mattress Miracle, floor models rotate every 8 to 14 months. When a model is replaced or the showroom layout changes, the current floor model is cleaned, sanitised, and offered at a reduced price.

Typical discount: 20% to 40% off the new price.

Condition: Lightly used. Comfort layers may show minor compression from testing, which typically settles after the first few weeks of regular use.

Warranty: Full manufacturer warranty, starting from your purchase date.

Type 2: Discontinued models

A discontinued model is a brand-new, never-opened mattress from a product line the manufacturer has updated. The mattress is identical to what was sold at full price for the previous 12 months. The only change is that the manufacturer has released a newer version, and the retailer needs to clear the old stock.

Typical discount: 10% to 25% off the last retail price.

Condition: Brand new. Factory sealed or warehouse stored.

Warranty: Full manufacturer warranty.

Type 3: Customer returns and exchanges

These are mattresses that were purchased, slept on, and returned or exchanged. Availability and condition vary widely. Some are in good condition (customer simply preferred a different firmness). Others show more wear.

Typical discount: 40% to 60% off.

Condition: Variable. Must be inspected carefully.

Warranty: Often reduced or void. Ask before buying.

The 7-Point Inspection Checklist

Use this checklist at any mattress store, not just ours. These seven checks take about 10 minutes and tell you whether a clearance mattress is worth buying.

1. Check for body impressions

Run your hand across the surface of the mattress with the mattress bare (no sheets, no topper). Feel for dips or soft spots, particularly in the centre and where hips and shoulders would rest. A slight impression (less than 1 inch) is normal for a floor model and will redistribute during regular use. An impression deeper than 1.5 inches suggests the comfort layers are significantly compressed and may not recover.

2. Test edge support

Sit on the edge of the mattress, right at the perimeter, as if you are sitting on the side of the bed. Quality pocket coil mattresses like the Restonic ComfortCare have reinforced edge coils that prevent the edge from collapsing. If the edge sinks more than 3 inches under your seated weight, the edge support has degraded, which is a sign of significant wear.

3. Listen for coil noise

Roll from side to side on the mattress. You should hear almost nothing from a pocket coil mattress because each coil moves independently in its fabric pocket. If you hear clicking, popping, or metallic creaking, the coil system may have issues. This is rare in quality mattresses but worth checking, especially on floor models that have been tested thousands of times.

4. Inspect the fabric cover

Look for stains, pulls, pilling, or tears in the fabric cover. Minor pilling on a floor model is cosmetic and does not affect performance. Stains should be identified and explained by the retailer. If a stain cannot be explained, that is a reason to pass. Tears or rips in the cover compromise the mattress's structural integrity over time.

5. Check the law tag

Every new mattress in Canada has a law tag that lists the materials used in construction. Verify that the tag matches the model description. If the retailer says it is a Restonic ComfortCare, the tag should confirm Restonic as the manufacturer. A missing or removed law tag on a "new discontinued" model is a red flag.

6. Ask about the warranty

Get the warranty terms in writing before purchasing. For floor models and discontinued stock at Mattress Miracle, the full manufacturer warranty applies. But this is not universal across the industry. Some retailers sell clearance mattresses "as-is" with no warranty coverage. Know what you are getting.

7. Test it for at least 15 minutes

Lie on the mattress for a full 15 minutes in your normal sleeping position. Most showroom visits involve lying on a mattress for 60 seconds and deciding based on first impression. First impressions are unreliable. A mattress that feels plush in the first minute may feel unsupportive after 10 minutes. A mattress that feels firm initially may become comfortable once your body settles into it.

What Clearance Actually Costs

To give you a realistic sense of clearance pricing, here is what the math looks like based on our regular Restonic lineup. These are illustrative examples, not current clearance prices (clearance stock changes constantly).

When Clearance Stock Appears

Clearance is not a scheduled event, but it follows patterns:

January: Post-holiday clearance. Retailers reduce prices on stock that did not sell during the November-December gift season. Smaller selection than September but still productive.

Spring (March-April): Some retailers clear floor models to refresh showrooms for the spring buying season. This is less predictable but can produce good finds.

Year-round: Individual floor models come off the floor when they are replaced by a newer display. This happens on no fixed schedule. The best way to stay informed is to ask. When NOT to Buy Clearance

Clearance is not always the right choice. Here is when to buy new instead:

When you need a specific size. Clearance inventory is unpredictable. If you need a king, there may only be queens available. If you need a specific firmness, the clearance option may be medium. New stock gives you exactly what you want.

When the mattress is for a child or teenager. Kids are harder on mattresses than adults, and the mattress will be in use for 10+ years as the child grows. When the clearance "deal" is not actually a deal. If a clearance mattress is 15% off but has visible body impressions and questionable edge support, the discount does not compensate for the reduced remaining lifespan. Calculate the cost per remaining year. If it is higher than a new mattress per year, the clearance is not the better value.

When the retailer will not explain why it is on clearance. Legitimate clearance has a clear reason: floor model, discontinued, exchange. If the salesperson cannot or will not explain the reason, be cautious.

We typically have 2 to 5 clearance mattresses on the floor at any given time. Most are queen size (the most common display size). Occasionally we have twin or king clearance items. The majority are floor models from our Restonic lineup, with occasional Sleep In and adjustable bed clearance items.

We also periodically clear bed frames and bedroom furniture. A platform bed frame that has been a floor display may be offered at 15% to 25% off. Bedroom sets and individual furniture pieces follow the same pattern.
