A mattress in a box, also sold as a bed in a box, is a full-size mattress squeezed flat in a vacuum press, rolled tight and wrapped for courier delivery. Some arrive in a carton. Others come rolled in heavy plastic, about the shape of a large duffel bag. Mattress Miracle, a family-owned store in Brantford, Ontario since 1997, sells both kinds. A rolled mattress is built the same way as a flat-shipped one. What changes is the trip, and especially how long it sits compressed before anyone opens it. What Is a Mattress in a Box?

A mattress in a box is a foam or hybrid mattress that the factory compresses, rolls and packs small enough for a courier to carry. The mattress goes into a heavy plastic bag, a press squeezes out the air, and the flattened mattress is rolled into a tight cylinder. That roll is boxed or wrapped in plastic. When you cut the wrap at home, the foam draws air back in and rises to full height.

All-foam mattresses compress easily because there is no steel inside. Hybrid mattresses ship rolled too when they use pocketed coils (springs sewn into their own fabric pockets, so each one flexes on its own). A traditional innerspring with a wired-together coil unit usually travels flat on a truck.

• Boxed: the rolled mattress is packed in a carton. The Restonit Frost ships this way, per its listing.
• Rolled in plastic: no carton, just a wrapped roll. The Sleep In Gel Comfort and Paradise ship this way.

Does a Mattress in a Box Fully Expand?

A mattress in a box does fully expand when it is opened soon after compression and given time in a warm room. The Sleep In Paradise listing says to unroll it on the frame, cut the plastic carefully and allow 24 to 48 hours before sleeping on it. Most of the rise happens in the first 24 hours. Some mattresses keep firming up slightly over the first week.

The bigger variable is time spent rolled before the plastic comes off. Mattress Miracle learned this the hard way. In 2018 we tried stocking compressed, rolled foam mattresses in volume, and within 18 months we changed how we do it, because too many came back. The trouble was rarely the mattress. Most problems with a rolled mattress start when it sits compressed for months before it is opened.

Canadian-Made Mattresses in a Box That Ship Free Across Canada

For a Guest Room or First Apartment: Sleep In Embassy ($605 Queen)

The Sleep In Embassy Euro Top is the lowest-priced queen on this list: a one-sided 8-inch mattress with a medium-soft soy-based bio foam core and a quilted euro top. Twin and Twin XL $475.20, double $539, queen $605, king $715. The trade-off is paperwork: the listing states no warranty term, so ask before you order.

For a Rolled Hybrid Under $700: Sleep In Paradise and Cool Breeze

Both are Sleep In pocket-coil hybrids at the same prices: $630 twin, $675 double, $695 queen and $980 king. The Paradise is 11 inches, medium, and ships rolled in plastic wrap. The Sleep In Cool Breeze, a medium-firm hybrid with a Cool Max cover, is the one we'd point a warm sleeper on a budget toward. Its listing gives no height, so ask if your frame is tall.

For Side Sleepers Who Want Coils: Sleep In Comfort Sleep ($965)

The Comfort Sleep is 13 inches tall, with 936 pocket coils in five zones and a 3-inch medium-soft bio foam layer under a stretch bamboo cover. The coils are 1.8 mm wire at the head, lumbar and legs and 2.2 mm at the sides. Its listing pitches it at side sleepers who need cushioning. Twin $875, double $920, queen $965, king $1,295, with a 10-year warranty.

For Memory Foam Fans: Sleep In Gel Comfort ($1,129)

The Sleep In Gel Comfort all-foam mattress is 10 inches of gel-infused memory foam over high-density support foam, with CertiPUR-US certified foams. Twin and Twin XL $1,004, double $1,091, queen $1,129, king $1,399. The trade-off is heat: its own listing says a seriously hot sleeper will usually sleep cooler on a pocket-coil hybrid.

For a Boxed Gel Hybrid: Restonit Frost ($1,852)

The Restonit Frost ice gel mattress ships compressed in a box, per its listing. Its 12 inches hold a cooling cover, an ice gel layer, gel-infused memory foam and nano coils (very small pocketed springs). Below sit soft high-resilience foam and a soy-based high-density base, all under a zip-off cover. Twin $1,647, double $1,706, queen $1,852, king $2,106. The warranty is 10 years, non-prorated.

For Latex Under Memory Foam: Restonit Organique ($1,831)

The Restonit Organique, a 10-inch tight top, layers a 4 lb gel memory foam over natural Talalay latex, then soft foam and a soy-based foam core. The listing shows no organic certificate, so we describe it by its materials. Twin $1,709, double $1,770, queen $1,831, king $2,136. Its listing doesn't say whether it ships rolled or boxed, so call if that matters for your stairs.

For Natural Materials: Natura, Built to Order

The Natura line runs from the Green Spring Reflection at $1,525.60 for a queen to the Eco Sanctuary at $5,589. Most Natura listings say each mattress is built to order by Natura, about four weeks, and it then ships rolled. The Eco Brilliance and Eco Transcend are on our Brantford floor. Natura describes those two as made with GOTS-certified organic materials (organic cotton ticking and organic wool) and lists no organic certification for their latex. • The listing names what is inside.

Ordering a mattress in a box from Mattress Miracle outside Southern Ontario means free courier delivery, with a checkout estimate of 3 to 7 business days for the Sleep In and Restonit models, while most Natura mattresses are built to order first. Beyond 200 km of Brantford there is no white glove setup and no old mattress removal. The courier leaves the roll at the door, and you unroll it, cut the wrap and give it 24 to 48 hours.

The 60-Night Comfort Guarantee applies wherever the mattress is delivered. It counts from the delivery date and allows one exchange with no exchange fee. A mattress protector is required, and custom sizes, clearance items, floor models and "as-is" products are excluded. A dearer replacement means you pay the difference; a cheaper one means the difference comes back as store credit or money back. What Are the Drawbacks of a Mattress in a Box?

The main drawbacks of a mattress in a box are that you can't lie on it first and it needs a day or two to expand. New foam also smells for a while. Three more catch buyers off guard:

• Firmness is a guess. A 7 on a website is a 7 to whoever wrote the page, who doesn't know your weight or how you sleep. Our mattress firmness guide for Canadian sleepers helps you read the scales.
• Exchanges cost delivery. Even with a comfort guarantee, sending a mattress back across the country usually means a courier charge. Ask what it is before you order.
• No setup. Outside a store's delivery area, nobody carries it upstairs or takes the old one away.

All-foam models also tend to run warmer than coil hybrids; the Gel Comfort listing says so itself, because foam has no open coil layer for air to move through. None of this rules a boxed mattress out. Our side-by-side of a mattress in a box against a store-bought mattress weighs each trade.

Is Buying a Mattress in a Box a Good Idea?

Buying a mattress in a box is a good idea when you already know the feel you like or live far from a showroom. It also suits a bedroom up a tight staircase. It is a weaker idea if you have a back or neck condition, you are well outside the average weight range, or you and a partner disagree about firmness. Those buyers learn more from lying on a few mattresses than from a spec sheet.

A rolled mattress fits up stairwells that a flat queen won't, and a buyer in Thunder Bay or Kelowna gets the same model as someone in Brantford. The middle path is to test first and ship second: book a showroom visit or call for a phone walk-through, then have the one you chose shipped rolled. Does a Mattress in a Box Smell? Off-Gassing and VOCs

A new mattress in a box usually does smell when you first open it. The odour comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases released by new foam, adhesives and fabrics, a process called off-gassing. Health Canada lists mattresses among the household products that emit gases into indoor air. The smell is strongest right after unwrapping, so the first day belongs in a room with an open window.

CertiPUR-US certified foam is made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, and phthalates regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. It is tested for low VOC emissions, under 0.5 parts per million (CertiPUR-US). The program certifies flexible polyurethane foam only, so it says nothing about the cover, glue or latex. How Long Does a Mattress in a Box Last?

A mattress in a box lasts about as long as the same mattress shipped flat, because compression is only the way it travels. What decides its life is what is inside. The Sleep Foundation says that under normal conditions mattresses should be replaced every 6 to 8 years. For foam, it suggests densities of 1.7 PCF or more in polyfoam and 5 PCF or more in memory foam (Sleep Foundation, updated July 15, 2025). PCF means pounds per cubic foot.

Density is hard to fudge, so ask for it. On our list, the Organique's layer list gives its number: a 4 lb gel memory foam layer, under that 5 PCF line, resting on Talalay latex. The Sleep In and Frost listings say "high-density" without a figure.

Warranty length is the other clue. Every rolled model in our table with a printed warranty carries 10 years, and Natura's Latex and Organic Lines carry 20. Every mattress Mattress Miracle carries with a 10-year warranty is one we have watched last 10 years, and customers tend to come back at or close to the 10-year mark.

What to Check Before You Buy a Mattress in a Box

Before you buy a mattress in a box in Canada, check four things on the listing or by phone:

1. The layers, the height and the foam density.
2. The warranty: the years, whether it is prorated (pays less as the mattress ages), and how deep a sag must be before it counts.
3. The return or exchange terms, in writing. The ISED Office of Consumer Affairs puts it this way: "In Canada, businesses are not obligated to accept the return of purchased items unless they are defective" (Office of Consumer Affairs). A trial is the seller's own policy.
4. Delivery both ways, and how long the mattress has been compressed.

The base matters too. A mattress in a box needs a flat, solid surface: a platform, a box spring or foundation, or slats close together. The Cool Breeze listing says no more than 3 inches apart. If it settles softer or firmer than you hoped, a mattress topper in your size changes the feel for less than a new mattress.

What Is the Cheapest Mattress in a Box in Canada?

The cheapest mattress in a box Mattress Miracle ships across Canada is the Sleep In Embassy Euro Top: $605 for a queen and $475.20 for a twin, shipped free. The cheapest hybrids are the Sleep In Paradise and Cool Breeze at $695 for a queen. Prices across the wider market move with every sale, so judge a deal on the delivered price and the exchange terms.

Be wary of the crossed-out price. Under Competition Bureau guidance, a "regular price" holds up only if more than 50% of sales were at that price or higher within a reasonable period, usually a year. It can also hold up if the product was offered in good faith at that price for a substantial period, usually within a year (Competition Bureau Canada). Mattress in a Box for Brantford and Southern Ontario Buyers

For buyers in Brantford, Paris or Hamilton, a rolled mattress makes the most sense for a third-floor walk-up, a cottage loft or a stairwell too tight for a flat queen.
