What Off-Gassing Actually Is
That "new mattress smell" is not one chemical. It is dozens of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) releasing from the polyurethane foam, adhesives, and flame retardant treatments used in mattress manufacturing.
A 2022 study published in Chemosphere identified specific compounds emitted from memory foam mattresses under controlled chamber conditions. The most commonly detected VOCs included toluene (from polyurethane foam production), formaldehyde (an adhesive byproduct), acetaldehyde, acetone, and 2-propanol (Beckett et al., 2022). These are not obscure chemicals. They are well-studied compounds with established exposure guidelines.
The smell is strongest immediately after unboxing because compressed or vacuum-sealed mattresses trap gases during packaging. When you open the package, weeks of accumulated emissions release at once. This is why bed-in-a-box mattresses often smell stronger than mattresses delivered traditionally, even if the foam composition is identical.

We should be clear about something: off-gassing is not unique to mattresses. New cars, fresh paint, carpet, furniture, and even clothing all release VOCs. The concern with mattresses is proximity. You spend 7-8 hours with your face 2-3 inches from the surface, breathing whatever the foam releases. That proximity makes the exposure level per hour higher than with most other household products.
How Long Off-Gassing Really Lasts
Most mattress companies say "a few hours to a few days." The actual research tells a more nuanced story.
The Beckett et al. (2022) chamber study tracked emissions from memory foam mattresses over 32 days. They found two distinct emission phases:
Fast-decaying compounds (acetone, 2-propanol): These peaked on day one and had emission half-lives of 4-12 hours. They are responsible for most of the initial smell. Within 24-48 hours, these compounds drop to barely detectable levels.
Slow-decaying compounds (toluene, chloromethane): These also peaked on day one but decayed much more gradually, with emission half-lives of approximately 24 days. At the 31-day mark, measurable levels were still present, though well below the concentrations of day one.
What This Means Practically: The smell fades within 1-3 days. The measurable emissions take weeks to months to fully dissipate. For healthy adults, the low-level residual emissions are generally within safe limits. For people with chemical sensitivities or respiratory conditions, the first 2-4 weeks warrant extra ventilation.
The "just air it out for a day" advice is not wrong, but it is incomplete. It addresses the smell. It does not address the slower-decaying compounds that continue at low levels. We are not saying this to alarm anyone. We are saying it because accurate information helps people make better decisions, especially parents furnishing a child's room or someone managing asthma.
The Body Heat Effect Nobody Mentions
This is the finding that most mattress guides skip entirely, and it is arguably the most important one.
A 2019 study published in Environmental Science and Technology measured VOC emissions from polyurethane mattresses at different temperatures. They found that emissions at body temperature (36 degrees Celsius) were approximately 2.5 times higher than emissions at room temperature (23 degrees Celsius). Body heat was identified as the primary driver, more significant than humidity or carbon dioxide exposure (Kira et al., 2019).
This means that off-gassing is not a static process that happens at the same rate day and night. Emissions increase when someone is sleeping on the mattress and decrease when the bed is empty. The surface directly under your body gets warmer and releases more VOCs than the edges.
Why does this matter? Because the standard industry test for CertiPUR-US certification measures emissions at room temperature (23 degrees Celsius) in an empty chamber over 72 hours. The actual emission profile during sleep is different from the certification test conditions.

What CertiPUR-US Actually Tests
CertiPUR-US is the most commonly cited mattress foam certification in Canada. Understanding what it does and does not cover helps you evaluate its significance.
What It Tests
CertiPUR-US tests polyurethane foam components (not the assembled mattress) against these emission limits:

What It Does Not Cover
This is important and rarely discussed:
CertiPUR-US tests the foam only. It does not test adhesives, fabric covers, fire barriers, or the assembled mattress as a complete product. A mattress with CertiPUR-US certified foam can still have non-certified adhesives or cover materials.
It does not test for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) like organophosphate flame retardants that are not on the prohibited list. A 2025 Canadian study tested 16 children's mattresses and found regulated phthalates in several, including one that exceeded the Canadian limit for di-n-butyl phthalate (Vaezafshar et al., 2025).
CertiPUR-US is an industry-funded program run by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam. It is not a government standard. This does not make it unreliable, but it is worth understanding who is behind the testing.

Canadian Indoor Air Quality Standards
Canada does have indoor air quality guidelines relevant to mattress off-gassing, though no mattress-specific VOC emission standard exists. This is a regulatory gap.
Health Canada's Residential Indoor Air Quality Guidelines set exposure limits for several VOCs found in mattress emissions:

The practical reality: CertiPUR-US certified mattresses in well-ventilated rooms generally produce emission levels well below Health Canada's guidelines. The concern increases in poorly ventilated rooms (basement bedrooms, closed windows in winter) and for vulnerable populations (infants, asthmatics).
Which Mattress Types Off-Gas More
Not all mattresses produce the same level of emissions. The primary variable is foam content.
All-Foam and Memory Foam (Highest Emissions)
These mattresses are 100% polyurethane foam or memory foam. Every inch of the mattress contributes to off-gassing. Bed-in-a-box brands that use all-foam construction and vacuum compression produce the strongest initial odour.
Hybrid (Moderate Emissions)
A pocketed coil core with foam comfort layers on top. The coil core is inert (steel does not off-gas). Only the top 2-4 inches of foam contribute to emissions. Our Restonic ComfortCare series is a hybrid design with 1,222 pocketed coils (queen) and moderate foam comfort layers.
Traditional Innerspring (Lower Emissions)

Mattresses using natural latex, organic cotton, and organic wool produce the least VOC emissions because they contain little or no polyurethane foam. Practical Steps to Reduce Exposure
If you have already bought or are about to buy a new mattress, here is what actually helps based on the research.
Ventilate Aggressively for 72 Hours
Open windows in the bedroom for the first three days. If Brantford weather makes this impractical (January deliveries, for example), run a fan pointed toward an open window for at least a few hours each day. Cross-ventilation, with windows open on two sides of the room, is significantly more effective than a single open window.
The Beckett et al. (2022) study showed that the majority of fast-decaying VOCs dissipate within the first 72 hours. This is the window where ventilation makes the biggest difference.
Use a Mattress Protector from Day One

Choose Lower-Foam Options When Possible
If off-gassing is a significant concern for you, choose a mattress with less foam. Innerspring and hybrid designs with pocketed coil cores contain less polyurethane than all-foam mattresses. Consider Room Temperature

Ontario Winter Consideration: Ventilating a bedroom in January in Brantford means losing heat.
