Buying a mattress starts with one question that sounds simple until you actually try to answer it: what size do I need?

Canadians use different size names than Americans in some cases (we say "double" more often than "full," and our "single" is what most U.S. retailers call a "twin"), and the actual dimensions can vary by half an inch depending on the manufacturer. That half inch matters when you are trying to fit a bed frame, choose fitted sheets, or squeeze a dresser into a small bedroom.

This guide puts every Canadian mattress size in one place, with the exact measurements in inches and centimetres, the minimum room size you need, and honest advice about who each size actually works for.

Twin and Single Mattress Size

The twin (also called single in Canada) measures 38 inches wide by 75 inches long (97 x 191 cm). It is the standard mattress for children, teenagers, and single adults in compact rooms.

At 38 inches, a twin gives one person about the same sleeping width as a crib-to-toddler-bed transition. It fits comfortably in bedrooms as small as 7 by 10 feet, leaving room for a nightstand and a small dresser.

Twin XL (Single XL)

The Twin XL adds five inches of length (38" x 80") without getting any wider. Those five inches make a real difference for teenagers who have hit a growth spurt and adults over 5'10" who find their feet hanging off a standard twin.

Two Twin XL mattresses placed side by side equal the exact dimensions of a standard King (76" x 80"). This is how split king adjustable beds work, and it is one of the reasons the Twin XL has become more popular in Canada in recent years.

Double and Full Mattress Size

The double (or full) measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long (137 x 191 cm). It adds 16 inches of width compared to a twin, which sounds like a lot until two people try to sleep on it.

Here is the honest truth about doubles: they were originally designed as a couple's mattress decades ago, when the average person was smaller and bedrooms were built differently. Today, a double gives each partner only 27 inches of personal sleeping space. That is less than a crib mattress provides for a baby.

A double works well for one adult who wants more room than a twin but does not have the bedroom space for a queen. For couples, we almost always recommend stepping up to a queen unless the room physically cannot fit one.

Queen Mattress Size

The queen measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long (152 x 203 cm). It is the most popular mattress size in Canada, and for good reason: it gives two adults 30 inches of personal width each while fitting in most standard master bedrooms.

A queen needs a room of at least 10 by 10 feet for comfortable clearance on both sides and at the foot. In most Canadian homes built after 1970, the primary bedroom meets or exceeds this minimum.

Why the Queen Dominates Canadian Sales

The queen hits a practical sweet spot. It is wide enough for two people to sleep without constant contact. It is long enough for anyone under 6'4" to stretch out fully. And it fits through standard Canadian doorways (which are typically 32 to 36 inches wide) without the manoeuvring headaches that come with a king.

Bedding is also easiest to find in queen size. Fitted sheets, duvet covers, and mattress protectors are stocked in queen more than any other size at virtually every Canadian retailer.

Queen RV Size

There is one queen variant worth knowing about. The Queen RV (also called "short queen") measures 60 inches wide by 75 inches long. It is five inches shorter than a standard queen and exists specifically for recreational vehicles, campers, and some older mobile homes where the sleeping alcove was built to a shorter dimension. A standard queen fitted sheet will bunch at the foot on an RV queen mattress. Look for sheets specifically labelled "RV Queen" or "Short Queen."

King Mattress Size

The standard king measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long (193 x 203 cm). That gives each partner 38 inches of personal sleeping width, which is the same width as an entire twin mattress. If you have ever wished you had more room to spread out, a king delivers.

The trade-off is space. A king needs a minimum room size of 12 by 12 feet, and you will want clearance of at least 24 inches on each side for getting in and out of bed comfortably. Nightstands, a dresser, and a walking path all need to fit within that remaining floor space.

California King

The California king (72" x 84") is four inches narrower and four inches longer than a standard king. It was designed for taller sleepers, but here is something most people do not realise: a standard king gives you more total sleeping area. The Cal king trades width for length, so you gain legroom but lose shoulder room.

California kings are harder to find in Canada. Most Canadian retailers stock standard king inventory, and finding Cal king sheets, protectors, and frames requires more searching. Unless you are over 6'4" and specifically need the extra four inches of length, a standard king is usually the more practical choice in Canada.

Specialty and Oversized Mattress Sizes

Split King

A split king is two Twin XL mattresses (each 38" x 80") placed side by side on a king-sized frame. The total sleeping surface is identical to a standard king (76" x 80"), but each side operates independently.

The split king exists primarily for adjustable bed bases. When each mattress sits on its own adjustable base, one partner can raise their head for reading or acid reflux relief while the other lies flat. This is not possible with a single-piece king mattress on a split adjustable base because the mattress bends unevenly.

The downside: you need two sets of Twin XL fitted sheets instead of one king sheet, and there is a gap down the centre that some couples find noticeable. A king-sized flat sheet and duvet still work on top.

Split Queen

A split queen works the same way as a split king but with two 30" x 80" mattresses. These are much harder to source in Canada. Most manufacturers do not produce a 30-inch-wide mattress as a standard option, so split queen setups usually require custom ordering.

Alaskan King and Oversized Options

The Alaskan king (108" x 108") is the largest bed size available. It is a nine-foot square. Before you get too excited, consider that this mattress will not fit through a standard doorway, weighs over 200 pounds, and requires custom bedding for everything.

Other oversized options include the Wyoming king (84" x 84") and the Texas king (80" x 98"). These are almost exclusively custom-order products in Canada. We do not stock them, and most Canadian retailers do not either. If you need an oversized mattress, expect longer lead times and significantly higher prices for both the mattress and all the bedding that goes with it.

How to Choose the Right Mattress Size

The right mattress size comes down to four practical factors. Get these right and you avoid the two most common mistakes we see: buying too small (and regretting it six months later) or buying too large (and turning your bedroom into an obstacle course).

1. Measure Your Room First

Grab a tape measure before you do anything else. Measure wall to wall in both directions, then subtract the space you need for furniture and walking paths. You want at least 24 inches of clearance on each side of the bed you use for getting in and out, and at least 30 inches at the foot for comfortable movement.

2. Count the Sleepers

One adult can sleep comfortably on anything from a twin up. Two adults need a queen at minimum. If either partner is a restless sleeper, runs warm, or just likes personal space, a king is worth the upgrade if your room can handle it.

For children, a twin works until they hit their teenage years. A Twin XL is the smarter buy for teens since it matches what they will sleep on in university residence and avoids the cost of replacing a too-short mattress during a growth spurt.

3. Consider Your Height

Standard twin and double mattresses are 75 inches (6 feet 3 inches) long. If you are 5'10" or taller, your feet may hang off or press against the footboard. Queen, king, and Twin XL mattresses are all 80 inches long (6 feet 8 inches), which comfortably accommodates sleepers up to about 6'4".

4. Think About Doorways and Stairs

The mattress has to get into your bedroom before you can sleep on it. Standard Canadian interior doorways are 32 inches wide. A queen mattress is 60 inches wide but compresses and bends enough to fit through a 32-inch doorway when stood on its side. A king is 76 inches wide and can be trickier, especially around tight corners and narrow hallways.

Bedding and Frame Compatibility by Size

Getting the mattress size right is only half the equation. Your bed frame, sheets, mattress protector, and duvet all need to match.

A common mistake is using a queen fitted sheet on a double mattress. It will technically stretch over the corners, but it will be loose and bunch up overnight. Always match the sheet size to the mattress size exactly. The same applies to mattress protectors, which need a snug fit to stay in place and do their job.

What Each Size Costs in Canada

Mattress prices in Canada vary enormously depending on brand, materials, and construction quality. A compressed foam mattress shipped in a box will cost less than a handcrafted pocket coil, but the sleeping experience and longevity are not comparable.
