Canada uses the same standard dimensions as the United States, so a Queen from one brand is the same outer footprint as a Queen from another. Where it gets confusing is the units: Canadian stores quote sizes in inches, in centimetres, and sometimes in feet, all on the same tag. Width and length decide whether the mattress fits your frame and your room, but mattress depth (height) runs from 6-inch bunk profiles to 15-inch pillow tops, and it decides whether your fitted sheets and foundation work. Twin (Single)
At 96 cm wide, a twin is suitable for one person only. It's the standard children's bed size and the size used in bunk beds, daybeds and most children's bedroom furniture. If you're buying a mattress for a couple and your bedroom is at least 10 x 10 feet (3 x 3 metres), a queen is likely the right answer. The Canadian master bedroom median is around 12 x 12 feet, which comfortably accommodates a queen with appropriate clearance on three sides.

King and California King
King (Eastern King)
King at 193 x 203 cm is 40 cm wider than a queen. That gives each person in a couple approximately 97 cm of personal space, essentially a twin each. King is worth the investment if your bedroom can accommodate it (typically 12 x 14 feet minimum for comfortable clearance) and if partner movement disruption is a significant issue for either of you.
The trade-off is cost (king models typically cost 30-50% more than the same queen), heavier weight for setup, and larger sheets and accessories. Split king configurations, two twin XLs side by side, allow each partner to use an independent adjustable base while maintaining the shared king footprint. California King
California King is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a standard King. In centimetres that is 183 x 213 cm. Total surface area is very similar, but the shape suits tall sleepers (people 6'4" or taller) who need the extra foot length. California King sheets and accessories are less common and more expensive than standard King, and most Canadian retailers carry it by special order only. For most Canadians, if the width of a King isn't needed, a queen is the more practical step down.
Specialty and Non-Standard Sizes

Our 4-Step Sizing Framework
- Step 1, measure the room: Note the wall the bed sits against and the clear floor on each open side. You want 60cm minimum to walk, 90cm if it is the main path or you open dresser drawers there.
- Step 2, count the sleepers: One adult is happy on a Double or Twin XL. Two adults start at a Queen. Add a King only if both partners are wide sleepers, a child or dog joins regularly, or motion transfer is a real problem.
