RV Mattress Sizes: Why They're Different

RV manufacturers don't use standard residential mattress dimensions because sleep platforms in motorhomes, travel trailers and fifth wheels are constrained by the vehicle's floor plan. A bedroom slide-out, a corner bed, an over-cab sleeping platform or a rear queen all have dimensions dictated by the coach manufacturer's design decisions, not by mattress industry standards.

The result is a range of "RV sizes" that are close to but not the same as residential sizes. An "RV Queen" is typically 60" x 75" rather than the residential 60" x 80". An "RV King" is often 72" x 75" or 72" x 80". These 5-inch differences matter: a residential queen will hang off the end of an RV queen platform, creating a dangerous edge situation and a mattress that can shift during travel.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that RV bed dimensions vary by manufacturer and model year. A 2019 Forest River and a 2023 Keystone with nominally the same floor plan may have different actual sleeping surface dimensions. Always measure your specific platform rather than relying on the RV make/model.

Common RV Mattress Dimensions

Measuring your RV platform: measure width at the widest point and at the narrowest point (platforms are often not perfectly rectangular). Measure length at both sides. If the dimensions differ, the mattress needs to match the smallest dimension. Note whether the platform has any curved corners or obstacles (tie-down points, HVAC vents, storage lids) that affect mattress fit.

Best Materials for RV and Marine Environments

Material choice matters more in an RV or marine environment than in a home bedroom. The key environmental factors are:

Temperature Swings

An RV or boat stored over a Canadian winter can reach -30°C in unheated storage. Memory foam becomes rock-hard at very low temperatures and can crack if flexed while frozen. Latex and high-resilience open-cell foam handle temperature extremes better. When you return to the RV in spring, foam that froze solid and thawed repeatedly may have compromised cell structure.

Practical tip: if you store your RV in unheated storage through Canadian winters, remove the mattress and store it in a temperature-controlled location, or use a latex core that handles temperature extremes better than memory foam.

Humidity and Moisture

RVs and boats have higher ambient humidity than residential bedrooms, particularly during spring and fall transition seasons. Foam that traps moisture creates conditions for mould and mildew. Latex naturally resists mould and bacteria and dries more readily than memory foam. A breathable, removable cover that can be laundered is essential.

An RV mattress should be ventilated by raising it periodically if it sits directly on a solid platform without airflow beneath. Some RV sleep platforms have ventilation slots; if yours doesn't, a slatted or perforated platform board can be added under the mattress.

Vibration

Road vibration and marine wave motion are constant in a moving vehicle or vessel. Foam cores handle this better than innerspring systems, which can develop noise and wear from repeated micro-movements. A latex core or high-density foam core is appropriate for moving environments.

Truck and Semi Cab Mattresses

Day cab trucks without sleeping accommodations are outside this discussion. Sleeper semi cabs and long-haul truck sleepers have their own size constraints, typically in the range of 28" to 36" wide and 75" to 80" long for single berths. These are highly custom dimensions.

For owner-operators spending long periods in the sleeper, mattress quality genuinely affects health and job performance. Back pain from poor mattress support in a sleeper cab is a real occupational health concern. A 3-to-4-inch high-resilience foam or latex core in the correct custom dimension is the standard approach. Boat and Marine Mattresses

Marine mattresses face the most demanding environmental conditions: salt air, persistent humidity, occasional spray or condensation, and platforms that are almost never rectangular. V-berths, quarterberths, pilot berths and settee conversions all have irregular shapes that require custom cutting.

For marine applications:

• Outdoor marine foam (reticulated foam): Open-cell structure allows water to pass through and drain. Used in cockpit cushions but also as a base layer for v-berths that may get wet
• Closed-cell foam: Doesn't absorb water at all but is firm. Used as a moisture barrier base layer under a comfortable foam or latex top layer
• Natural latex: Resists mould and bacteria, handles humidity well, and can be custom-cut to irregular shapes including V-berth cuts
• Wool batting covers: Wool is naturally moisture-wicking and resistant to mildew; a wool-covered latex core is a premium marine berth choice
