Quick Answer: Most stock RV mattresses are thin foam that sags within a season. A proper short queen (60" x 75") or custom-cut mattress makes more difference to your camping trip than any other upgrade. Whether you are camping in Kananaskis or parked at a Banff KOA, your sleep surface determines whether you wake up ready for the trail or hobbling to the coffee pot.

Why Stock RV Mattresses Fail After One Season

Here is something RV dealers will not tell you: the mattress that comes with your trailer was chosen to keep the purchase price down, not to keep your back happy. Most factory RV mattresses use low-density polyurethane foam, typically 1.2 to 1.5 pounds per cubic foot. For reference, a decent home mattress uses foam at 1.8 to 2.5 lbs/ft3. That density difference is the reason your RV mattress develops a permanent body impression after a handful of camping weekends.
Brad, our senior consultant, hears this story constantly from customers heading west to camping trips. "They come in and say the RV is perfect except for the bed. Three nights at a campground and their back is worse than before the vacation started." It is the single most common RV complaint we hear, ahead of storage space or bathroom size.
What Research Says About Mattress Density and Back Pain
A systematic review published in Sleep Health found that medium-firm mattresses are associated with lower back pain and better sleep quality compared to firm or soft surfaces (Radwan et al., 2015). The thin, soft foam in stock RV mattresses offers neither adequate support nor sufficient pressure relief, which is a problem when you are spending long days hiking or paddling before climbing into bed.

RV Mattress Sizes: Not What You Think
One of the first surprises for RV owners is that RV mattress sizes do not match standard home mattress sizes. That queen bed in your fifth wheel? It is almost certainly a short queen, and that difference matters.
| RV Mattress Size | Dimensions | Standard Equivalent | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| RV Short Queen | 60" x 75" | Standard Queen: 60" x 80" | 5 inches shorter |
| RV King | 72" x 75" | Standard King: 76" x 80" | 4" narrower, 5" shorter |
| RV Three-Quarter | 48" x 75" | Between Twin XL and Full | Unique to RVs |
| RV Bunk | 28-42" x 72-80" | Varies widely | Often custom shapes |
| Truck Camper | Varies | No standard equivalent | Often needs custom cut |
The short queen is the most common RV mattress size by far. It is five inches shorter than a standard queen, which matters if you or your partner are over six feet tall. That missing five inches is the difference between sleeping comfortably and having your feet hang off the end or pressing against the wall.
What to Actually Look for in a Replacement RV Mattress

When you are shopping for an RV mattress upgrade, the considerations are different from buying a home mattress. Weight matters because your RV has a cargo capacity limit. Thickness matters because your ceiling clearance might be tight. And moisture management matters because RV bedrooms deal with condensation that home bedrooms never see.
RV Mattress Buying Checklist
- Foam density: Look for at least 1.8 lbs/ft3 base foam. Higher density means longer life and better support on the road.
- Thickness: 8 to 10 inches is the sweet spot. Thicker is not always better in an RV because you lose headroom and the mattress gets heavier.
- Weight: A queen memory foam mattress can weigh 50 to 80 pounds. Factor this into your cargo weight calculations.
- Moisture resistance: RV bedrooms get condensation. Look for breathable covers and consider a moisture barrier between the mattress and the platform.
- Foldability: Some RV slide-outs require the mattress to fold or flex. Make sure a rigid mattress will not block your slide mechanism.
Dorothy, our sleep specialist, adds a point people often miss: "If you have a short queen platform, do not just throw a standard queen on it and let it overhang. The unsupported edges will sag and break down much faster than the supported centre. Get the right size or get it custom cut."
Calgary RV Life: Sleeping Through Alberta's Extremes
Calgary sits at the doorstep of some of Canada's best camping. Kananaskis, Banff, Jasper, Drumheller, and the Crowsnest Pass are all within a few hours. That means Calgary RV owners use their rigs hard, often from May through October, and sometimes year-round for the truly dedicated.
Alberta's temperature swings create specific challenges for RV sleep. A July day in the Rockies can hit 28 degrees Celsius and drop to 5 degrees overnight. Your mattress needs to handle both. Memory foam, for instance, stiffens in cold temperatures and becomes firmer than you expect. A hybrid with individually wrapped coils maintains consistent feel across a wider temperature range because the coil system does not change with temperature the way foam does.
Ontario to Alberta: The Cross-Canada RV Connection
We have outfitted RV mattresses for customers heading from Ontario to Alberta, British Columbia, and the Maritimes. People stop at our Brantford showroom on their way west along the 401 and the Trans-Canada. If you are passing through southern Ontario, our showroom at 441 1/2 West Street in Brantford is worth a detour. We can measure, cut, and fit a custom RV mattress while you wait, and you leave with a bed that actually supports you for the rest of the trip.
Condensation: The Hidden RV Sleep Problem
Every RV owner in Alberta knows about condensation. When the temperature drops at night, moisture from your breathing collects on cold surfaces, and that includes the underside of your mattress where it sits on a plywood platform. Over a season, this can lead to mould growth between the mattress and the platform.
The fix is straightforward: a ventilated mattress base or a moisture barrier pad between the mattress and the platform. Some RV owners use a simple mesh pad that allows airflow. Others prefer a waterproof mattress protector on the bottom of the mattress itself. Either approach works. Ignoring it does not.
Custom Cuts for Odd-Shaped RV Beds

Not every RV bed is a simple rectangle. Airstream trailers have curved walls. Some fifth wheels have radius corners where the slide-out meets the main body. Pop-up campers often have bed platforms that narrow at one end. Truck campers are their own universe of odd dimensions.
This is where a custom-cut mattress becomes necessary rather than optional. A rectangular mattress crammed into a non-rectangular space either leaves gaps (where you lose pillows and phones at 2 a.m.) or bunches up against walls (creating pressure points and uneven sleep surfaces).
How to Measure for a Custom RV Mattress
Use a flexible measuring tape, not a rigid ruler. Measure the platform at the widest and narrowest points. Measure the length at both sides, since RV platforms are not always perfectly square. Note any rounded corners by measuring the radius (the distance from the corner to where the curve begins). Take photos of the platform from above and from each corner. Bring all of this to a mattress shop and they can cut a proper template.
The Topper Shortcut
If a full mattress replacement is not in the budget, a quality mattress topper can extend the life of a mediocre RV mattress by a season or two. A 2 to 3 inch memory foam or latex topper adds pressure relief and comfort without the weight and cost of a full replacement. It is not a permanent solution, but it is a reasonable stopgap while you decide what the right long-term upgrade looks like.
Temperature and Foam Performance
Viscoelastic memory foam is temperature-sensitive by design. At cooler temperatures (below about 15 degrees Celsius), memory foam becomes noticeably firmer because the polymer chains have less thermal energy for molecular movement. This means a mattress that feels perfect in your heated home may feel like a board on a cold October night in the Rockies. Hybrid mattresses with spring support maintain more consistent firmness across temperature ranges (Chow & Odell, 2014, Cellular Polymers).
When to Replace vs When to Top
A practical question: is your current RV mattress worth saving?
Replace it if the foam has a permanent body impression deeper than 1.5 inches, if you can feel the plywood through the mattress, if you wake up with back or hip pain that disappears after an hour of moving around, or if the mattress has any sign of moisture damage or mould. These problems will not be fixed by a topper.
A topper is reasonable if the base foam is still intact but just too firm or too thin, if the mattress is less than 3 years old and still structurally sound, or if you only use the RV a handful of weekends per year and do not want to invest in a full replacement yet.
