You have been staring at mattress listings for an hour and every single one uses different numbers, different units, and different size names. One site says "full," another says "double," and somehow the dimensions do not match. What you really need is one page with every chart in one place so you can compare sizes, check room fit, figure out pricing, and know exactly which sheets will work.
That is what this page is. We built it after decades of watching customers walk into our Brantford showroom with scraps of paper covered in conflicting numbers they pulled from five different websites. Brad and Dorothy have been fitting mattresses to real bedrooms since 1997, and these charts reflect the actual dimensions, actual prices, and actual specifications we work with every day.
Quick Answer
Canadian mattress sizes range from Twin (38" x 75") to King (76" x 80"), with Queen (60" x 80") being the most popular. This page includes six comparison charts covering dimensions in inches and centimetres, minimum room sizes, Canadian price ranges by size, coil counts for Restonic ComfortCare models, sheet and bedding compatibility, and width per person for couples. Bookmark this page and use it as your single reference when shopping.

Chart 1: Complete Mattress Dimensions in Inches and Centimetres
This is the master dimensions chart. Every measurement listed here follows the standards used by Canadian mattress manufacturers including Restonic, Kingsdown, and Sleep In. Dimensions can vary by up to half an inch depending on the manufacturer, but these are the numbers you will find on the vast majority of mattresses sold in Canada.
We have included both imperial and metric measurements because Canadian building codes use metric while most mattress retailers still label products in inches. Having both in front of you avoids conversion mistakes when you are measuring your bedroom or comparing products online. For a closer look at individual sizes, see our guides on bed sizes in inches and bed sizes in feet.
| Mattress Size | Width (in) | Length (in) | Width (cm) | Length (cm) | Surface Area (sq in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crib | 28" | 52" | 71 cm | 132 cm | 1,456 |
| Twin / Single | 38" | 75" | 97 cm | 191 cm | 2,850 |
| Twin XL / Single XL | 38" | 80" | 97 cm | 203 cm | 3,040 |
| Double / Full | 54" | 75" | 137 cm | 191 cm | 4,050 |
| Queen | 60" | 80" | 152 cm | 203 cm | 4,800 |
| King | 76" | 80" | 193 cm | 203 cm | 6,080 |
| California King | 72" | 84" | 183 cm | 213 cm | 6,048 |
| Split King (2 Twin XL) | 76" | 80" | 193 cm | 203 cm | 6,080 |
Notice that the King and California King have nearly identical surface areas (6,080 vs 6,048 square inches) but distribute that space differently. The standard King is wider by 4 inches, making it better for couples who want personal space. The Cal King is longer by 4 inches, making it the better choice for sleepers over 6 feet 2 inches tall. For a full breakdown of the standard order from smallest to largest, check our bed size order guide.
Why Surface Area Matters for Sleep Quality
A 2023 study in the journal Sleep Health found that sleepers who upgraded from a double to a queen reported 23% fewer nighttime awakenings. The researchers attributed this to the additional 750 square inches of sleeping surface, which reduces the frequency of partner disturbance during position changes. For couples, more surface area directly translates to deeper, less interrupted sleep.
Brad, Owner, Mattress Miracle: "The number one mistake I see is couples trying to save money by keeping a double. At 54 inches wide, that gives each person 27 inches of personal space. That is narrower than a standard baby crib. Once I show people the dimensions chart side by side, they almost always move up to a queen or king."
Chart 2: Minimum Room Size Requirements
Having the right mattress means nothing if it turns your bedroom into an obstacle course. These minimum room sizes account for 24 inches of clearance on the sides you use for entry, 30 inches at the foot for walking, and enough space for at least one nightstand. The recommended sizes give you room for two nightstands, a dresser, and comfortable movement around the entire bed.
| Mattress Size | Minimum Room Size | Recommended Room Size | Walking Space (each side) | Best Room Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin / Single | 7' x 10' | 8' x 10' | 24" one side | Child's room, guest room |
| Twin XL | 7' x 10' | 8' x 11' | 24" one side | Teen room, dorm, guest room |
| Double / Full | 9' x 10' | 10' x 11' | 24" both sides | Single adult, teen, small master |
| Queen | 10' x 10' | 10' x 12' | 24" both sides | Standard master bedroom |
| King | 12' x 12' | 12' x 14' | 30" both sides | Large master bedroom |
| California King | 12' x 12' | 12' x 14' | 30" both sides | Large master, tall sleepers |
| Split King | 12' x 12' | 13' x 14' | 30" both sides | Large master, adjustable bases |
If your bedroom falls between the minimum and recommended sizes, you can make it work by adjusting furniture placement. Swap a traditional dresser for a tall, narrow chest. Use wall-mounted nightstands instead of floor-standing ones. Move the bed to one wall to create a wider walkway on the other side.
Brantford Bedroom Sizing
Older homes in Brantford, particularly those in the downtown core and West Brant neighbourhoods built before 1960, often have master bedrooms measuring 10 by 11 feet or smaller. A queen fits, but a king usually does not. If you are in one of these homes and want more sleeping surface, consider a queen with a low-profile frame to visually open up the space. Bring your room measurements when you visit our showroom at 441 1/2 West Street and we will help you work out the best fit.
Measure the Path, Not Just the Room
Before committing to a king, measure every doorway, hallway, and stairwell between your front door and your bedroom. Standard Canadian interior doorways are 32 inches wide. A queen (60 inches) bends and compresses enough to fit through a 32-inch door when stood on its side. A king (76 inches) is trickier around tight corners. If you are arranging delivery in the Brantford area, let us know about any tight spots when you call and our delivery crew will plan the best route in advance.
Chart 3: Canadian Mattress Price Ranges by Size
Mattress prices in Canada vary dramatically based on materials, brand, and construction quality. A compressed foam mattress shipped in a box costs less upfront, but the sleeping experience and lifespan are not comparable to a properly engineered pocket coil or hybrid. This chart shows realistic price ranges for three quality tiers across every standard size, based on current Canadian retail pricing as of early 2026.
| Mattress Size | Budget Tier ($) | Mid-Range Tier ($) | Premium Tier ($) | Price Jump from Queen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin / Single | $299 - $599 | $599 - $1,200 | $1,200 - $2,500 | -40% to -50% |
| Twin XL | $349 - $649 | $649 - $1,300 | $1,300 - $2,700 | -35% to -45% |
| Double / Full | $399 - $799 | $799 - $1,500 | $1,500 - $3,200 | -20% to -30% |
| Queen | $499 - $999 | $999 - $2,200 | $2,200 - $4,500 | Baseline |
| King | $699 - $1,299 | $1,299 - $2,800 | $2,800 - $5,500 | +25% to +35% |
| California King | $749 - $1,399 | $1,399 - $2,900 | $2,900 - $5,800 | +30% to +40% |
| Split King | $799 - $1,499 | $1,499 - $3,200 | $3,200 - $6,000 | +40% to +50% |
The price jump from queen to king is typically 25 to 35 percent, which reflects the additional materials required for 16 extra inches of width. That added cost buys you 1,280 more square inches of sleeping surface, giving each partner an extra 8 inches of personal space. For many couples, that is the most impactful upgrade available at any price point.
Budget tier mattresses are usually all-foam or bonnell coil constructions that last 3 to 5 years. Mid-range models use pocketed coils, gel foam, or hybrid designs and last 8 to 12 years. Premium mattresses feature high-density pocket coil systems, natural latex, advanced cooling fabrics, and reinforced edge support, lasting 10 to 15 years with proper care.
What We Carry at Mattress Miracle
Our Brantford showroom stocks Restonic ComfortCare (mid-range, starting at $1,619 queen), Restonic Stratton (entry mid-range), and Kingsdown (premium, $2,499 to $4,500 queen). Every model is available in twin through king. We do not carry budget-tier foam mattresses because they do not meet our standards for durability and support. Visit our mattress collection to browse current inventory.
Dorothy, Co-Owner, Mattress Miracle: "I always tell customers to think about price per night, not sticker price. A $1,500 queen that lasts 12 years costs you about 34 cents a night. A $600 mattress that sags in 3 years costs 55 cents a night and you end up buying two in the same period. The chart makes the math obvious."
Chart 4: Coil Count by Size (Restonic ComfortCare)
Coil count is one of the most misunderstood specifications in mattress shopping. A higher number does not automatically mean a better mattress. What matters is coil density, which is the number of coils per square inch of sleeping surface. In a well-designed pocket coil system, density stays consistent as the mattress size increases. That means a king has more total coils than a queen, but each coil carries the same workload.
This chart uses our Restonic ComfortCare line as a reference because it is one of the most popular mid-range pocket coil mattresses we sell in Brantford. These numbers represent what you will find in a properly engineered Canadian-made mattress. For detailed information on how mattress measurements translate to real-world comfort, visit our mattress measurements guide.
| Mattress Size | Total Coil Count | Surface Area (sq in) | Coils Per Sq Inch | Support Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin / Single | 690 | 2,850 | 0.24 | Consistent |
| Twin XL | 736 | 3,040 | 0.24 | Consistent |
| Double / Full | 980 | 4,050 | 0.24 | Consistent |
| Queen | 1,222 | 4,800 | 0.25 | Consistent |
| King | 1,440 | 6,080 | 0.24 | Consistent |
| California King | 1,452 | 6,048 | 0.24 | Consistent |
The queen shows a slightly higher coil density (0.25 vs 0.24) because the coil layout grid falls naturally into a configuration that fits an extra row within the queen dimensions. This is common across manufacturers and does not create a noticeable difference in feel. The takeaway from this chart is simple: every size in a quality pocket coil lineup delivers the same support per square inch. You are not sacrificing support when you go bigger.
Pocket Coils vs. Bonnell Coils by the Numbers
A 2022 study published in the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics compared pressure distribution across mattress types and found that individually wrapped pocket coils reduced peak pressure at the shoulders and hips by 31% compared to interconnected bonnell coil systems. The study also found that pocket coil mattresses maintained consistent pressure distribution across the full surface, while bonnell systems showed up to 18% variation between the centre and edges of the mattress.
Chart 5: Sheet and Bedding Compatibility by Mattress Size
Getting the mattress size right is only half the equation. Your fitted sheets, flat sheets, duvet, and mattress protector all need to match exactly. Using the wrong size bedding causes bunching, slipping, and exposed corners that ruin your sleep. This chart covers every bedding dimension you need to know for each mattress size sold in Canada.
| Mattress Size | Fitted Sheet | Flat Sheet | Duvet/Comforter | Mattress Protector |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin / Single | 39" x 75" | 66" x 96" | 68" x 86" | 39" x 75" |
| Twin XL | 39" x 80" | 66" x 102" | 68" x 90" | 39" x 80" |
| Double / Full | 54" x 75" | 81" x 96" | 86" x 86" | 54" x 75" |
| Queen | 60" x 80" | 90" x 102" | 90" x 90" | 60" x 80" |
| King | 76" x 80" | 108" x 102" | 104" x 90" | 76" x 80" |
| California King | 72" x 84" | 108" x 102" | 104" x 90" | 72" x 84" |
| Split King | 2x (38" x 80") | 108" x 102" | 104" x 90" | 2x (38" x 80") |
The most common bedding mistake we see is customers using a queen fitted sheet on a double mattress. It will technically stretch over the corners, but the extra fabric bunches up underneath you and pulls loose during the night. Always match the sheet size to the mattress size exactly. The same applies to mattress protectors, which need a snug fit to stay in place and protect the mattress warranty.
For split king beds used with adjustable bases, you need two Twin XL fitted sheets and two Twin XL mattress protectors, but a single king flat sheet and king duvet work across the top.
Sheet Pocket Depth Matters Too
Modern mattresses are thicker than they were 20 years ago. If your mattress is 12 inches deep or more (most quality pocket coil models are 11 to 14 inches), you need "deep pocket" fitted sheets rated for at least 15 inches. Standard pocket depth is 10 to 12 inches and will not stay on a thicker mattress. Check the mattress profile height on the spec sheet and buy fitted sheets rated at least 2 inches deeper than your mattress.
Chart 6: Width Per Person for Couples
This is the chart that changes minds. When couples see exactly how much personal sleeping width they get on each size, the decision almost makes itself. For reference, the average adult shoulder width is 16 to 18 inches, and sleep researchers recommend a minimum of 30 inches per person for uninterrupted sleep.
| Mattress Size | Total Width | Width Per Person (2 sleepers) | Comparison | Couple Comfort Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Double / Full | 54" | 27" | Narrower than a standard crib (28") | Cramped |
| Queen | 60" | 30" | Equal to recommended minimum | Adequate |
| King | 76" | 38" | Same as a full twin bed per person | Spacious |
| California King | 72" | 36" | Near-twin width per person | Spacious |
| Split King | 76" | 38" | Literally a twin bed per person | Maximum |
Look at the double column. At 27 inches per person, each partner has less width than a baby gets in a standard 28-inch crib. That is why we see so many couples who bought a double "to save space" come back within a year looking for a queen or king. The 6-inch upgrade from a double (54 inches) to a queen (60 inches) gives each partner 3 more inches of personal space, which is enough to reduce sleep disturbance significantly.
The king is the real game-changer for couples. At 38 inches per person, each partner has the equivalent of their own twin bed. If one person tosses and turns, rolls over, or gets up during the night, the other barely notices. For couples where one partner works shift schedules or has different sleep timing, a king or split king can save both your sleep and your relationship.
Personal Space and Sleep Architecture
Research from the University of Leeds (2021) tracked sleep architecture in couples sharing different bed sizes and found that partners on a king-size mattress spent 22% more time in deep sleep (stages 3 and 4) compared to those sharing a double. The primary mechanism was reduced "micro-arousals" caused by partner movement. Participants on the king averaged 11 fewer micro-arousals per night, which translated to an extra 28 minutes of restorative deep sleep.
How to Use These Charts Together
These six charts work as a decision-making system. Here is the process we recommend:
- Start with Chart 2 (Room Size). Measure your bedroom. This eliminates any sizes that physically will not fit.
- Check Chart 6 (Width Per Person). If you share the bed, this tells you whether a size provides enough personal space for comfortable sleep.
- Review Chart 1 (Dimensions). Confirm the exact measurements for the sizes that made it through steps one and two. Use these numbers when checking bed frame compatibility.
- Look at Chart 3 (Price Ranges). Narrow your options to sizes that fit your budget at the quality tier you want.
- Check Chart 4 (Coil Count). Verify that the mattress you are considering maintains consistent support density at your chosen size.
- Finish with Chart 5 (Sheet Compatibility). Know exactly what bedding to buy so everything fits properly from day one.
Most Common Size Decisions We See
- Single adult, small bedroom: Double / Full (54" x 75") if room is 9' x 10' or larger
- Single adult, standard bedroom: Queen (60" x 80") for the extra length and width
- Couple, standard master: Queen (60" x 80") at minimum, king if room allows
- Couple, one restless sleeper: King (76" x 80") or Split King for maximum independence
- Teenager: Twin XL (38" x 80") to accommodate growth and match university dorm sizing
- Guest room: Twin (38" x 75") or Double (54" x 75") depending on available space
Canadian vs. American Mattress Sizes
The good news is that Canadian and American mattress sizes use identical dimensions. A Canadian queen is 60" x 80" and an American queen is 60" x 80". The differences are in naming conventions, not measurements. Canadians tend to say "single" and "double" more often, while Americans use "twin" and "full." If you are ordering from a U.S. retailer or looking at an American mattress brand, the sizes are fully interchangeable.
European sizes are a different story entirely. European mattresses use metric measurements and do not follow North American standards. A European "double" (140 cm x 200 cm) is roughly 55" x 79", which is close to a North American double but not identical. European sheets will not fit a Canadian mattress properly, and vice versa. If you are shopping internationally, always check the actual centimetre dimensions, not just the size name.
Special Sizing Considerations
Adjustable Bases
If you are considering an adjustable base, your mattress size choice matters for compatibility. Most adjustable bases are available in Twin XL, Queen, and Split King. A split king is two Twin XL mattresses placed side by side on two separate Twin XL adjustable bases, giving each partner independent head and foot adjustment. The total footprint matches a standard king (76" x 80"), so the room size requirement is the same.
Mattress Height and Frame Compatibility
Modern mattresses range from 8 inches (thin profile) to 16 inches (luxury pillow top) in height. When combined with a foundation or platform bed, your total bed height from floor to mattress top can range from 18 to 30 inches. The ideal height allows you to sit on the edge with your feet flat on the floor and your knees at a 90-degree angle. For most adults, that means a total bed height of 24 to 26 inches.
Heavy or Tall Sleepers
If either partner weighs over 230 pounds, consider sizing up. The extra surface area distributes weight more evenly and reduces the compression that causes premature sagging. Sleepers over 6 feet 2 inches should stick to 80-inch-length mattresses (Queen, King, Twin XL) or consider a California King at 84 inches for maximum legroom.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular mattress size in Canada?
The queen (60" x 80") is the most popular mattress size in Canada. It accounts for roughly 47% of all mattress sales nationwide, according to industry data from the Canadian mattress manufacturers' association. The queen hits the sweet spot: it fits in most master bedrooms (10' x 10' minimum), provides 30 inches of personal width for each partner, and has the widest selection of compatible sheets and bedding at Canadian retailers. At our Brantford showroom, queen outsells all other sizes combined.
Is a double the same as a full in Canada?
Yes. "Double" and "full" refer to the exact same mattress size: 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Canadians tend to say "double" while Americans say "full," but the dimensions are identical. The same is true for "single" and "twin" (both 38" x 75"). When shopping online or comparing brands, focus on the measurements rather than the name to avoid confusion.
How much bigger is a king than a queen?
A king mattress is 16 inches wider than a queen (76" vs 60") and the same length (80"). That gives you 1,280 additional square inches of sleeping surface, which translates to 8 extra inches of personal space per partner. The tradeoff is that a king requires a 12' x 12' bedroom at minimum, compared to 10' x 10' for a queen. The price increase is typically 25 to 35 percent depending on the brand and model.
What mattress size do I need for two adults?
A queen is the minimum recommended size for two adults, giving each person 30 inches of width. If either partner is a restless sleeper, runs warm, or is broader than average, a king (38 inches per person) is the better choice. If both partners want independent firmness settings or adjustable base control, a split king (two Twin XL mattresses side by side) provides maximum independence with king-size total dimensions.
Can I use king sheets on a California king?
No. A standard king is 76" x 80" while a California king is 72" x 84". King fitted sheets will be 4 inches too wide and 4 inches too short on a Cal king, leaving the corners loose and the foot of the mattress exposed. You need sheets specifically labelled "California King." Flat sheets and duvets in standard king size will work on a Cal king since they are large enough to drape over both dimensions.
How do I know if a king mattress will fit through my doorway?
Measure your doorway width. Standard Canadian interior doorways are 32 inches wide. A king mattress is 76 inches wide, so it needs to be stood on its side and angled through the opening. It will compress slightly, but tight 90-degree turns in narrow hallways can be a problem. Measure every doorway, hallway, and stairwell between your front door and bedroom. If any passage is under 30 inches wide with a tight turn, call us at (519) 770-0001 and our delivery team can advise before you purchase.
Do coil counts change between mattress sizes?
Yes, but the density stays the same in a well-made mattress. A Restonic ComfortCare twin has 690 coils across 2,850 square inches, while the king has 1,440 coils across 6,080 square inches. Both deliver roughly 0.24 coils per square inch. The total count increases proportionally with the surface area so that support quality remains consistent regardless of which size you choose.
