You got your residence acceptance. You paid the deposit. Now you are staring at a packing list wondering what size sheets to buy for a bed you have never seen.

This is the question that floods parent group chats every August. What size is the mattress? Can I bring my own? Is it long enough for my 6-foot-2 kid? The answers are not always obvious because universities and colleges publish room dimensions but rarely spell out mattress specs in plain language.

McMaster's newest residence opened in September 2023 at 10 Bay Street South, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and developed with Knightstone Capital. It serves upper-year students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, filling a gap that McMaster had needed for years.

Each bedroom comes furnished with a double bed, chair, desk with bookshelf, and wardrobe or dresser. The suites are designed for independent living, a step up from the communal style of first-year residences.

The double bed is the key detail. Not a twin. Not a twin XL. A full double, which means you need double-size sheets (54 x 75 inches), not twin sheets. This trips up more students than you would expect, especially international students unfamiliar with Canadian bedding sizes.

McMaster Residence Beds: The Twin vs. Twin XL Question

Across McMaster's older residences, bed sizes vary. Some traditional first-year residences use twin or twin XL beds, while newer facilities like 10 Bay use doubles. The distinction matters if you are tall.

A standard twin is 39 x 75 inches. A twin XL is 39 x 80 inches, those extra 5 inches of length accommodate students over 5 feet 10 inches without their feet hanging off the edge. A double is wider at 54 inches but stays at the standard 75-inch length.

Before buying bedding, email your specific residence and ask for exact mattress dimensions. Bed frames can vary even within the same building depending on the model year of the furniture. A 5-minute email saves a trip to return wrong-sized sheets.

Mohawk College Fennell Campus Residence

Mohawk College operates its residence at the Fennell campus in Hamilton. The facility has 170 suites, each with two private bedrooms. Every bedroom includes a double bed, TV, and desk. Shared spaces include a kitchenette with full-size fridge and microwave, and a three-piece washroom.

Mohawk's residence is managed as a Residence and Conference Centre, meaning the rooms also host conference guests outside the academic year. This dual-use design means the furniture is commercial-grade, built for turnover, not personalisation.

Mohawk's Furniture and Room Rules

University and college residences have strict rules about what you can and cannot bring into your room. The general principle across most Ontario institutions: you cannot replace the provided bed frame or mattress. You can add to it.

Mohawk's room policies typically restrict additional furniture to items that fit within the existing room layout without blocking exits, windows, or heating units. The commonly cited "3 x 3 x 3" furniture guideline in student housing contexts refers to ensuring no single additional piece of furniture exceeds approximately 3 feet in any dimension, keeping rooms navigable for safety inspections and emergency egress.

Dorothy suggests visiting our showroom before move-in to try pillows in person. "Students sleep in every position possible," she says. "A stomach sleeper needs a thin pillow. A side sleeper needs something much thicker. Getting this right for $40 changes their entire first year."

The Residence Sleep Kit: What Actually Helps

Residence sleep is challenging. You are sharing walls with other students, dealing with unfamiliar noise patterns, adjusting to a new schedule, and sleeping on a mattress that hundreds of other people have slept on. Here is what actually helps versus what is a waste of money.

Worth the money: A quality pillow matched to your sleep position. A mattress topper that adds comfort without changing the bed dimensions. A zippered mattress protector. Earplugs or a white noise machine for shared-wall noise. A fan for air circulation and white noise.

Skip it: Expensive weighted blankets (too hot in residence rooms without air conditioning). Full mattress replacements (not allowed in most residences). Elaborate headboard attachments (damage walls, lose your damage deposit). Scented candles (fire code violation in all Ontario residences).
