Reading Time: 4 minutes
You took a pill to relax. An hour later, your heart is racing, your mind is spinning, and you feel a sense of impending doom.
This isn't supposed to happen. Melatonin is the "sleep hormone," right?
At Mattress Miracle, we hear this story occasionally. Customers tell us, "Melatonin makes me feel weird." They aren't imagining it. For a small percentage of the population, melatonin acts like a stimulant rather than a sedative.
Why Some People Get Jittery
A "paradoxical reaction" is when a drug does the opposite of what it's intended to do. (Like how Benadryl makes some kids hyper instead of sleepy).
While the exact mechanism isn't fully understood, some researchers believe that for people with certain genetic traits (slow metabolizers), melatonin supplements linger too long or interact with dopamine receptors in a way that triggers alertness and anxiety instead of drowsiness.
The High-Dose Anxiety Trigger
More often, the anxiety is simply a side effect of overdose.
Taking 10mg of melatonin is a massive shock to the system. It can cause a sudden drop in body temperature and blood pressure. Your body might interpret this rapid physical change as a "threat," triggering a fight-or-flight response (adrenaline spike) to compensate.
The "Rebound" Panic
If you take a high dose, your body might clear it rapidly, leading to a sudden withdrawal effect in the middle of the night. This chemical crash can wake you up with a racing heart and a feeling of panic.

The Nightmare-Anxiety Loop
Melatonin increases REM density (dream intensity). If you are already prone to anxiety, your subconscious is filled with worries. Melatonin turns those worries into vivid, high-definition nightmares.
Waking up from a terrifying dream naturally leaves you with lingering anxiety. You might be afraid to go back to sleep. This creates a cycle where the "cure" for your insomnia (melatonin) is actually fueling your sleep anxiety.
Calmer Alternatives
If melatonin makes you anxious, do not push through it. Stop.
Try these instead:
- Magnesium Glycinate: It acts on the physical body, relaxing tight muscles and calming the nervous system without messing with your hormones. It is widely considered the "anti-anxiety mineral."
- L-Theanine: An amino acid found in green tea that promotes relaxation without sedation.
- Weighted Blanket: Physical pressure increases serotonin and oxytocin (calm hormones) naturally.
The "Comfort" Cure
Sometimes anxiety at night is just your body saying, "I'm uncomfortable." If you are tossing and turning because your mattress is too hard, that physical agitation feels like anxiety. A pressure-relieving mattress (like the Restonic Hybrid) calms the physical body, which often calms the mind.

Call 519-770-0001Does melatonin interact with antidepressants?
Yes. Melatonin can interact with SSRIs (like Prozac) and MAOIs. Since both affect serotonin, combining them can lead to increased side effects, including anxiety. Always check with your doctor.
Can I take it if I have panic attacks?
Proceed with caution. If you are prone to panic attacks, the physical sensations of melatonin (heaviness, temperature drop) might trigger a panic response. Start with a micro-dose (0.3mg) if you must try it.
Why do I feel depressed the next day?
Melatonin can cause "dysphoria" (sadness/flatness) in some people the next day. This is a known side effect. If you notice your mood dropping after starting melatonin, discontinue use.
Does caffeine make the anxiety worse?
Yes. If you have caffeine in your system and take melatonin, you are sending mixed signals ("Wake up!" vs. "Go to sleep!"). This chemical conflict often results in a jittery, anxious feeling.
