What "Organic" Actually Means in Bedding

The word "organic" gets thrown around loosely in the mattress industry. A mattress with one organic cotton layer and nine synthetic layers can technically market itself as containing "organic materials." That is not the same as a mattress built primarily from certified organic components.

At Mattress Miracle, we are honest about what is and is not organic in our product line. Some of our products use certified organic materials throughout. Others use natural materials (latex, wool, bamboo) that are not certified organic but are still a significant step up from synthetic alternatives. We will tell you exactly what you are getting.

Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "We have carried organic and natural bedding for years. The demand has grown steadily, especially from young families in Brantford who want to reduce chemical exposure in their bedrooms. We do not carry greenwashed products. If something says organic on our floor, we can tell you which certification backs that claim."

Organic and Natural Mattresses

What organic mattresses actually contain Canada
Model Price (Queen) Natural Materials Key Feature
Morning Glory Organic $800 Organic cotton, natural foam Flippable, eco-friendly
Restonic Silk and Wool $1,959 Natural silk, natural wool Seasonal flip, natural fibres
Restonit Organic $1,582 Organic materials Rolled, adjustable-friendly
Husky Natural Life $1,599 Natural hybrid SleepKing premium natural

Restonit Organic Mattress ($1,582)

The Restonit Organic is our most accessible organic mattress. It ships rolled and compressed (like all Restonit models), making it available to customers across Canada. It works with adjustable bed bases, which is rare for organic mattresses. Most organic brands produce traditional construction that cannot bend. At $1,582, it competes well against organic mattresses from specialty retailers that typically start at $2,000-$3,000.

Morning Glory Organic Flippable ($800)

The Morning Glory from Sleep In is a flippable mattress made with organic cotton and natural foam layers. At $800, it is the most affordable way to get an organic sleep surface with the longevity benefits of double-sided construction. Read our flippable mattress guide for more on why double-sided construction matters.

Organic and Natural Latex Pillows

The Natura pillow line is the centrepiece of our natural pillow collection. Made in Canada using Talalay latex sourced from sustainable rubber plantations, these pillows are naturally hypoallergenic, dust-mite resistant, and long-lasting.

Pillow Material Price Best For
Natura Dream Granulated latex $89 Mouldable latex, entry price
Natura Dream Mate Latex blend $119 Softer latex feel
Natura Aloe Dream Mate Organic latex, aloe cover $124 Sensitive skin, organic
Natura Luscious Plant-based memory foam $138 Memory foam fans wanting natural
Natura Exquisite Solid Talalay core $158 Firm support, side sleepers
Natura Ultimate Organic Premium Talalay core $168 Top-tier natural support
Natura Organic Latex Certified organic latex $196 Maximum organic credentials

Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "The Natura Dream at $89 is how most people start with natural latex pillows. Once they feel the difference between latex and synthetic fill, they usually upgrade to the Exquisite or Ultimate within a year. Latex pillows last 3-4 years compared to 1-2 years for synthetic. The cost per year is actually comparable."

Organic and Wool Duvets

Wool is one of the oldest and most effective natural bedding materials. It regulates temperature, wicks moisture, resists dust mites, and is naturally fire-retardant (meaning it does not need chemical flame retardant treatments that synthetic duvets require).

Duvet Fill Price (Queen) Best For
Natura Wool Duvet Natural wool $269 Year-round wool warmth
Organic Wool Duvet Certified organic wool $299 Organic certification required
Alpaca Wool Duvet 100% alpaca wool $440 Hypoallergenic, ultralight warmth
Goose Down Duvet (Tencel) 600 loft goose down, Tencel shell $375 Natural down with organic cotton shell

Why Wool Over Synthetic?

A study published in Nature and Science of Sleep (Shin et al., 2016) found that wool bedding significantly improved sleep onset latency and total sleep time compared to synthetic alternatives. Wool's natural thermoregulation kept participants in a more comfortable temperature range throughout the night. The researchers noted that wool actively buffers body temperature fluctuations, rather than simply insulating like synthetic fill.

Organic and Natural Sheets

Sheets Material Price (Queen) Certification
Cotton Bliss Organic 100% certified organic cotton $30 Organic certified
Karira Bamboo Cooling Bamboo viscose $170 Natural bamboo
French Linen Sheet Set 100% French linen $340 OEKO-TEX certified

The Cotton Bliss Organic sheets at $30 are remarkable value. Certified organic cotton at this price is almost unheard of. They are a straightforward, honest product. At the other end, the French Linen sheets ($340) from Highland Feather are OEKO-TEX certified, which means every component has been tested for harmful substances. Linen gets softer with every wash and lasts significantly longer than cotton.

We also carry the full Highland Feather bamboo linen collection: Bamboo Linen Duvet Cover ($164), Bamboo Linen Fitted Sheet ($92), and the complete French Linen Duvet Set ($450) for those wanting the full natural experience.

Natural Mattress Protectors

Protector Material Price Key Feature
Cool Silk Protector Natural silk fibre $70 Silk cooling, natural fibre
Tencel Protector Tencel (eucalyptus) $95 Sustainable, moisture-wicking
Natura Wool Protector Washable wool $179 Temperature regulation, organic

The Natura Wool Protector is worth highlighting. Most wool protectors are dry-clean only, which is impractical. The Natura version is machine-washable, making it the only practical wool protector on the market at this price.

Certifications That Actually Matter

Organic bedding certifications GOTS GOLS OEKO-TEX comparison

What to Look For

  • CertiPUR-US: Certifies foam is made without harmful chemicals (heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates). Most quality mattress foams carry this. It is a baseline, not a premium.
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): The gold standard for organic textiles. Requires 70%+ organic fibres, restricts chemical processing, and audits the entire supply chain.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): Certifies latex contains 95%+ organic raw material. Relevant for latex mattresses and pillows.
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests finished products for over 100 harmful substances. Our Highland Feather French Linen carries this certification. It does not require organic materials, but it guarantees the product is free from harmful chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an organic mattress worth the extra cost?

It depends on your priorities. If reducing chemical exposure is important to you (particularly for children or allergy sufferers), organic materials offer genuine benefits. The Morning Glory at $800 proves you do not need to spend $3,000 for organic. If budget is the primary concern, our standard mattresses from Restonic and Sleep In already use CertiPUR-US certified foams, which are tested for harmful chemicals.

Are Natura pillows really organic?

The Natura line uses natural Talalay latex from rubber trees. The Organic Latex ($196) and Aloe Dream Mate ($124) specifically carry organic designations. The other Natura pillows use natural (not certified organic) latex, which is still a significant step above synthetic foam.

What is the most affordable way to go organic?

Start with Cotton Bliss Organic Sheets ($30) and a Natura Dream Pillow ($89). That is $119 for organic contact surfaces (the parts that touch your skin). Add the Morning Glory Organic Mattress ($800) when budget allows. Total organic sleep setup: under $1,000.

Do organic mattresses off-gas?

All new mattresses have some initial odour. Organic mattresses typically off-gas less and for a shorter duration than synthetic ones because they contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Restonit Organic ships rolled, so give it 24-48 hours in a ventilated room after unboxing.

Can I try organic bedding in your showroom?

Yes. We have Natura pillows, organic sheets, wool duvets, and the Morning Glory mattress on display at 441½ West Street in Brantford. Feeling the difference between organic cotton and standard cotton, or between latex and synthetic foam, is the best way to decide if the upgrade is worth it for you.
