Quick Answer
The Orthex Somnia is a Canadian-made ergonomic pillow line with heights from 14° to 30°. Choose 14° for shoulder support, 23° for acid reflux or snoring, and 30° for sleep apnea or significant elevation needs. Made with gel memory foam in Boisbriand, Quebec, with a 5-year warranty. Starting around
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "We have been helping Brantford families sleep better since 1997. Every customer gets personal attention, honest advice, and the kind of follow-up service you just do not get from big box stores."
Most people pick a pillow the same way they pick a towel, based on feel in the store, or price, or just whatever looked good online. Then they wonder why they wake up with neck pain three mornings out of five.
The Orthex Somnia takes a different approach. Each model in the line corresponds to a specific height range matched to shoulder width, because the only relevant measurement for a side-sleeper pillow is the distance between your head and the mattress when lying on your side. Too short, and your spine curves toward the mattress. Too tall, and it curves away. Either way, your neck pays for it over eight hours.
Orthex has been designing orthopedic sleep products in Boisbriand, Quebec since 2008, with a health professional team that includes occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and chiropractors. The Somnia line reflects that, it's a clinically-framed product, not a marketing exercise.
This guide explains how to choose the right Somnia height for your body, what the foam construction means for long-term performance, and how it compares to other ergonomic pillows available in Canada.
The Cervical Alignment Problem
Why Pillow Height Matters More Than Fill Material
Your cervical spine (the seven vertebrae in your neck) has a natural lordotic curve, a gentle C-shape that faces forward when you're upright. When you sleep on your side, the goal is to keep that curve in the same orientation it holds when you're standing. The variable that determines whether this happens is pillow height relative to your shoulder width.
A 2015 study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science found that cervical pillow height significantly affects neck muscle activity during sleep, with mismatched pillow height (too high or too low) increasing upper trapezius muscle activation. Sustained muscle activation during sleep correlates with morning neck stiffness and headaches.
Memory foam, latex, and down all have different feel characteristics, but none of them compensate for a pillow that's the wrong height. A comfortable pillow at the wrong height will cause the same alignment problems as a cheap pillow at the wrong height. Getting the height right first is what makes the difference.
How to Measure Your Shoulder Width for Pillow Selection
This is the single most important step. You need the distance from the base of your neck to the outside edge of your shoulder, not your overall shoulder width, but specifically the distance that will be "bridged" by the pillow when you sleep on your side.
How to measure:
- Stand in front of a mirror or have someone help you.
- Measure from the point where your neck meets your shoulder (the top of your trapezius, roughly) to the outside point of your shoulder.
- This measurement is your "shoulder gap", the height of pillow you need.
A rough guide by body size:
- Petite / slim shoulders (under 14"): Somnia 3.5" or 4"
- Average build (14"–17" shoulder width): Somnia 4" or 4.5"
- Medium-large build (17"–20"): Somnia 5"
- Broad shoulders (20"+): Somnia 6"
Mattress softness also matters slightly. A very soft mattress (where your shoulder sinks in 1–2 inches) effectively reduces the gap, you may want to size down one model. A very firm mattress or platform surface means the shoulder doesn't compress at all, so you may size up.
The Somnia Line: Every Model

Somnia 3.5", Travel and Compact Cervical Support
Height: 3.5"
Price: ~$100 CAD
Best for: Travel, smaller body frames, back sleepers with low cervical curve, all-position sleeping
The Somnia 3.5" is the only model in the line designed for multiple sleep positions rather than exclusively side sleeping. Its lower profile suits back sleepers who need cervical support without excessive elevation, and side sleepers with narrower frames.
The travel use case is its most distinctive application, it's sized to fit in overhead bins and standard travel bags while providing the same gel memory foam construction as the full-size models. People who regularly wake up with neck pain at hotels often find the Somnia 3.5" eliminates the problem; they've been sleeping on whatever pillow is in the room, and whatever that pillow is, it's probably not right for them.
Somnia 4", The Standard Side Sleeper
Height: 4.5"
Dimensions: 22" × 14"
Price: $140–$150 CAD
Best for: Side sleepers with average shoulder width (approximately 14"–17"), most adults with a standard build
The Somnia 4" is the most popular model and the one Orthex's team typically starts with for average-build adults seeking cervical alignment improvement. It's the baseline recommendation from the physiotherapist and occupational therapist input built into the product line.
The 22" × 14" footprint is a standard pillow size, it fits standard pillowcases, which matters for people who want to use their own pillowcases for aesthetics or allergen management. (The Somnia's own cover is already hypoallergenic, but having the option to use your own is useful.)
If you're unsure between the 4" and the 5" and you have average-to-moderate shoulder width, start with the 4". It's easier to add a thin sleep pillow under the Somnia than to compensate for one that's too tall.
Somnia 5", Medium-Large Frame Side Sleeping
Height: 5.5"
Dimensions: 22" × 14"
Price: ~$160 CAD
Best for: Side sleepers with medium-to-broad shoulders (approximately 17"–20"), taller sleepers
The Somnia 5" is the right choice for people who've tried standard ergonomic pillows and found them insufficient, they wake with the neck still curved, often toward the mattress (indicating the pillow isn't filling the shoulder gap adequately).
For people above average height (roughly 5'10" and above), the Somnia 5" is often the natural fit before measuring, because height and shoulder breadth tend to correlate. That said, measure rather than estimate, some tall people have narrower shoulder structures, and the 4" serves them better.
Somnia 6", Broad Shoulders and Lumbar Support
Height: 6"
Price: ~$170 CAD
Best for: Broad-shouldered sleepers (20"+ shoulder width), people using the pillow for lumbar and cervical support in a reclining or sitting position
The Somnia 6" has two distinct use cases. First: broad-shouldered side sleepers for whom the 5" is still insufficient. If you wake up with the neck curved toward the ceiling (indicating the pillow is filling the shoulder gap and then some), you've sized up too far, but a downward neck curve (toward the mattress) means more height is needed.
Second use case: lumbar support. Placed behind the lower back when sitting or in a semi-reclined position, the Somnia 6" provides substantial lumbar support, the memory foam conforms to the lumbar curve and holds it. This is particularly useful for people who spend significant time in bed working on a laptop, reading, or watching television.
Somnia Construction: What You're Buying
All Somnia models share the same foam specification:
- Gel-infused viscoelastic foam: High-density memory foam with gel particles integrated into the foam matrix. The gel absorbs and disperses body heat, addressing the classic complaint about memory foam sleeping hot. Heat is distributed through the foam rather than reflected back at the sleeper.
- High-density construction: Not all memory foam is created equal. Density determines how long the foam retains its shape. Lower-density memory foam (common in budget pillows) collapses within months, the pillow that felt right on purchase feels nothing like that six months later. Orthex's high-density specification is what makes a 5-year warranty credible.
- Coconut polyester knitted cover: Soft, breathable, with a texture that prevents shifting in the pillowcase. Removable and washable.
- 5-year warranty: Warranted against foam breakdown and loss of support for five years. Canadian warranty service from Boisbriand, Quebec.
The Firmness Question
Memory foam pillows have a reputation for being either too firm (doesn't contour) or too soft (bottoms out and loses support). Orthex's high-density gel foam occupies a middle position, it contours slowly over the first few minutes but then holds position rather than continuing to compress throughout the night.
This is different from the experience of sleeping on a spring pillow or a down pillow, where the support changes as you shift positions. The Somnia holds a consistent support profile through the night. Some people love this; some find the adjustment takes a week or two. If you've always slept on softer pillows, give yourself 5–7 nights before evaluating.
Somnia vs. Other Ergonomic Pillows in Canada

| Pillow | Price (CAD) | Heights Available | Foam Type | Warranty | Made in Canada |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orthex Somnia | $100–$170 | 3.5", 4.5", 5.5", 6" | Gel memory foam (HD) | 5 years | Yes (Quebec) |
| Tempur-Cloud / Pro | $120–$220 | Standard, Medium, Large | Tempur material (HD) | 3 years | No (US) |
| Sleep Country (various) | $40–$150 | Low/Medium/High | Mixed (varies by model) | 1–2 years | No |
| Coop Home Goods | $80–$100 CAD | Adjustable fill | Shredded memory foam | 5 years | No (US) |
| Generic memory foam pillow | $20–$60 | One size | Standard (low density) | 30 days – 1 year | No |
The Somnia's distinct advantage over most alternatives isn't the foam type, it's the height segmentation. Most competitors offer "low, medium, high" descriptions that don't tell you anything useful. Orthex gives you precise heights (3.5", 4.5", 5.5", 6") so you can measure and match. That specificity is what the health professional design team built in, and it's what differentiates the product from the larger ergonomic pillow market.

I'm a back sleeper, not a side sleeper. Does the Somnia work for me?
The Somnia line is primarily designed for side sleeping. For back sleepers, you generally want a lower loft pillow, the Somnia 3.5" can work, but a contoured cervical pillow (with a centre depression and raised edges) is usually better for pure back sleeping. If you switch positions during the night, the Somnia 4" often works as a compromise, but ask us about alternatives if you sleep predominantly on your back.
The Somnia feels too firm for the first few nights, is that normal?
Yes. High-density memory foam has a break-in period of approximately 5–7 nights. The foam softens slightly and conforms to your head and neck shape with regular use and body heat. It won't feel like a down pillow, the support profile is fundamentally different, but the firmness perception decreases noticeably in the first week. Most people who give it a full week find the Somnia superior to their previous pillow for neck support. Don't evaluate after one night.
Can I use the Somnia with the Orthex Symbia wedge?
Yes, they're designed to complement each other. When using a back wedge (23° or 30°) for GERD or sleep apnea, you still need cervical support. The Somnia on top of the wedge provides that support. In practice, the combination of a Symbia 23° wedge and Somnia 4" or 5" pillow is one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical interventions for GERD-related nighttime symptoms.
Does the Somnia sleep hot?
The gel infusion addresses the main heat retention issue with memory foam, gel particles absorb heat and distribute it rather than reflecting it back. Most people find the Somnia neutral to slightly cool in temperature. It's warmer than a down or latex pillow, but significantly cooler than standard memory foam. If you run very hot at night, using the Somnia with a bamboo or moisture-wicking pillowcase further improves the temperature experience.
What's the return or exchange policy if I choose the wrong height?
Speak with us at Mattress Miracle before purchasing, we want to help you choose the right height the first time. If after a full break-in period (7–10 nights) the height isn't working for you, ask us about our exchange options. We carry the full Somnia line, so swapping to the next size up or down is straightforward to arrange.
Can children use the Somnia?
The Somnia 3.5" is the closest to appropriate for children, but it's still sized for adults. Children generally benefit from pillows sized specifically for their head-to-shoulder proportion, which is significantly different from adults. For children with specific neck pain or sleep posture concerns, a pediatric physiotherapist referral is the right starting point, they can recommend specifically sized products rather than adapting adult products.
Not Sure Which Somnia Height Is Right?
We carry the full Somnia line at Mattress Miracle. If you want to walk through the shoulder measurement process and get a recommendation before ordering, Brad, Dorothy, or Talia can help, either in person or over the phone.
