When a sleeping baby takes two quick inhales followed by a long exhale, that is a physiological sigh. Your body does it involuntarily dozens of times per day to reinflate collapsed air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs.
The deliberate version, popularised by Stanford neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, takes this automatic pattern and uses it intentionally as a stress-reduction tool. The pattern was first described in scientific literature in the 1930s, but its practical application for anxiety and sleep has only been studied rigorously in the last few years.
How It Works: The Neuroscience in Plain Language
The key is the double inhale. Here is why it works.
Your lungs contain approximately 480 million tiny air sacs called alveoli. During normal breathing, some of these alveoli collapse and stay collapsed, reducing the surface area available for gas exchange. The second inhale (the "sip" of air after the first inhale) reinflates these collapsed alveoli, maximising the surface area.
With more surface area available, the extended exhale that follows offloads a larger amount of carbon dioxide in a single breath. This rapid CO2 removal shifts your blood chemistry slightly, which signals your brainstem to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" branch).

The four conditions were:

- Cyclic hyperventilation (emphasis on inhales, shorter exhales)
- Mindfulness meditation (passive observation of breath without controlling it)
All four methods improved mood and reduced anxiety compared to baseline. But cyclic sighing produced the largest improvements in positive affect and the largest decrease in resting respiratory rate. The exhale-focused approach outperformed even meditation, which is notable given meditation's extensive evidence base.
