Quick Answer: Standard pillow sizes in Canada are Standard (20" x 26"), Queen (20" x 30"), King (20" x 36"), and Euro (26" x 26"). Two standard pillows fit a twin bed, two queen pillows fit a queen bed, and two king pillows fill a king bed edge to edge. At Mattress Miracle in Brantford, we help match pillow size to your bed, sleep position, and comfort preferences.

Reading Time: 7 minutes
Pillow sizing seems like it should be straightforward, but walk into any bedding store and you will find at least five different size labels. Standard, queen, king, super standard, Euro, body, travel. It can be hard to know which size you actually need, especially when the differences between some sizes are only a few inches.
Those few inches matter more than you might think. The right pillow size affects how your bed looks, how well you sleep, and whether your pillowcase actually fits properly. This guide covers every standard pillow size with exact measurements, plus practical advice on which one works best for your situation.
Complete Pillow Sizes Chart
Here are the standard pillow dimensions used in Canada. These measurements are for the pillow itself, not the pillowcase.
Standard Pillow Sizes (Canada)
- Standard: 20" x 26" (51 x 66 cm). The most common size. Two standard pillows side by side span 52 inches, fitting a twin or double bed.
- Super Standard: 20" x 28" (51 x 71 cm). Two inches wider than standard. Less common but offers a bit more coverage. Fits standard pillowcases.
- Queen: 20" x 30" (51 x 76 cm). Four inches wider than standard. Two queen pillows span 60 inches, matching a queen mattress exactly.
- King: 20" x 36" (51 x 91 cm). The widest standard pillow. Two king pillows span 72 inches, fitting neatly across a king bed.
- Euro (European Square): 26" x 26" (66 x 66 cm). Square shaped. Primarily decorative, used as a backdrop behind sleeping pillows. Also popular as a reading or sitting-up-in-bed pillow.
- Body Pillow: 20" x 54" (51 x 137 cm). Extra long. Designed to be hugged or placed between the knees for spinal alignment.
- Toddler/Travel: 13" x 18" (33 x 46 cm). Small size for children or airplane travel.
All standard pillow sizes are 20 inches tall (top to bottom). The only difference between standard, queen, and king is the width. This is important to remember because pillow height (loft) is determined by the fill amount and type, not the size designation. A flat standard pillow and a flat king pillow are both 20 inches tall, but the king is 10 inches wider.
Which Pillow Size for Your Bed
Matching pillow size to bed size is partly about function and partly about appearance. Here is what works best for each bed width.
Pillow Size by Bed Size
- Twin bed (39" wide): One standard or queen pillow. Two standard pillows will overhang slightly but still look fine.
- Twin XL (39" wide): Same as twin. One standard or queen pillow.
- Double/Full (54" wide): Two standard pillows (52" total) fit almost perfectly. Two queen pillows (60") will overhang slightly.
- Queen bed (60" wide): Two queen pillows (60" total) fit edge to edge. Two standard pillows (52") leave gaps on the sides. Two king pillows (72") overhang.
- King bed (76" wide): Two king pillows (72" total) fill most of the width. Three standard pillows (78") also work. Two queen pillows leave noticeable gaps.
- California King (72" wide): Two king pillows (72") fit perfectly across.
Brad, our senior consultant, has a practical take on this. If you care about how the bed looks, match the pillow width to the bed width. If you only care about sleeping comfort, use whatever pillow size gives you the right support. Nobody is going to check your pillow dimensions in the middle of the night.
Pillow Size and Sleep Position
Your sleep position should influence your pillow size choice as much as your bed size does.
Pillow Support and Cervical Alignment
Research on pillow design and cervical spine support shows that pillow dimensions interact with sleep position to affect neck alignment. A study published in the Journal of Pain Research found that pillow height and firmness are the primary factors affecting cervical spine position, while pillow width determines how much lateral movement is supported during sleep. Side sleepers who move frequently benefit from wider pillows (queen or king) that keep the head supported even when shifting position.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers generally do well with any pillow size. The width is less critical because you are centred on the pillow and not moving side to side as much. A standard pillow provides plenty of surface area. Focus more on loft (height) and firmness than on width. A medium-loft pillow that keeps your head level with your spine is ideal.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers benefit from wider pillows (queen or king size). When you sleep on your side, you naturally shift position throughout the night. A wider pillow means your head stays supported even when you move. The extra width also provides a larger surface for the shoulder-to-head transition. Side sleepers typically need a higher-loft pillow to fill the gap between the mattress and the head, keeping the spine aligned.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers often do best with a standard-size pillow because they tend to scrunch the pillow under their head. A very wide pillow can force the head too high when sleeping face down. Some stomach sleepers prefer no pillow at all, or a very thin, soft standard pillow. If you sleep on your stomach, pillow width matters less than keeping the loft minimal to avoid neck strain.
The Combination Sleeper Challenge
Many people switch between back, side, and stomach positions during the night. If this describes you, a queen-size pillow in a medium loft offers the best compromise. It is wide enough for side sleeping, not so wide that it causes issues for stomach sleeping, and provides a good base for back sleeping. Adjustable-fill pillows (like shredded latex or memory foam) let you add or remove fill to fine-tune the height.
Specialty Pillow Sizes
Beyond the standard sizes, several specialty pillows serve specific purposes.
Body Pillows
At 20" x 54", body pillows are designed to support the full length of the torso and legs. They are popular with pregnant women, people recovering from surgery, and side sleepers who want something to hug while sleeping. Placing a body pillow between the knees helps maintain hip alignment and reduces lower back pressure.
Wedge Pillows
Wedge pillows come in various sizes but are typically 24" x 24" x 7-12" (width x length x height). They are not measured the same way as standard pillows because their triangular shape makes flat dimensions less meaningful. Wedge pillows elevate the upper body for acid reflux relief, post-surgery recovery, or breathing improvement.
Euro Pillows
Euro pillows (26" x 26") are square and most commonly used as decorative shams that sit behind the sleeping pillows. But they also work well as back support pillows for reading or watching television in bed. If you use your bed as a sitting space during the day, Euro pillows are more practical than decorative throw pillows because they actually provide real support.
CPAP Pillows
CPAP-compatible pillows typically measure 20" x 26" (standard size) but have cutouts or contours on the sides to accommodate the CPAP mask and hose. The dimensions match standard pillowcases, but the shape is specifically designed for sleep apnea therapy users.
Matching Pillowcases to Pillow Sizes
Getting the wrong pillowcase size is a small but annoying problem. Here is how pillowcase sizes line up with pillow sizes.
Pillowcase Size Guide
- Standard pillowcase: Fits standard and super standard pillows. Measures approximately 20" x 30" to allow for the pillow to fit inside with some room.
- Queen pillowcase: Fits queen pillows. Measures approximately 20" x 33". Also fits standard pillows (with extra fabric at the end).
- King pillowcase: Fits king pillows only. Measures approximately 20" x 40". Will look baggy on smaller pillows.
- Euro sham: Fits Euro pillows. Measures approximately 26" x 26". These are usually sold as "shams" with a decorative closure rather than an open end.
A common question is whether you can use a queen pillowcase on a standard pillow. Yes, it works. The extra few inches of fabric tuck under or behind the pillow. The reverse does not work well. A standard pillowcase on a queen pillow will be too tight, and the pillow may bunch or not fit inside the case properly.

What is the difference between standard and queen pillow sizes?
The only difference is width. Standard pillows are 20" x 26" and queen pillows are 20" x 30". The height is the same. Queen pillows provide four extra inches of width, which gives more room for movement during sleep. Two queen pillows fit a queen mattress edge to edge, while two standard pillows leave about 8 inches of gap.
How many pillows should I put on my bed?
For sleeping, one pillow per person is usually sufficient if it is the right size and loft. For appearance, two sleeping pillows plus two Euro shams creates a full, hotel-style look on a queen bed. On a king bed, two to three sleeping pillows plus two or three Euro shams fills the width nicely.
Can I use king pillowcases on queen pillows?
You can, but the pillowcase will have about 6 inches of excess fabric that hangs loose or needs to be tucked. It works in a pinch but will not look as tidy as a properly sized queen pillowcase. The reverse (queen case on king pillow) will not fit.
What size pillow should a side sleeper use?
Side sleepers benefit from queen or king size pillows because the extra width keeps the head supported during position changes. More important than width is the pillow loft (height). Side sleepers need a thicker pillow (4-6 inches) to fill the gap between the shoulder and head. Visit our Brantford showroom to test different options.
Are Canadian pillow sizes different from American?
No. Standard, queen, and king pillow sizes are identical in Canada and the United States. European sizes differ. A standard European pillow is typically 65 x 65 cm (approximately 26" x 26"), which is what we call a "Euro" pillow in North America.
