At 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, it is the smallest standard size that comfortably fits two adults while still fitting through hallways and into most bedrooms without a military-style logistics operation.

But "queen" on its own does not tell you everything you need to know before buying. How does it compare to a double? Will it fit in your room with space left for a dresser? What sheets do you buy? Does your bed frame need to be exactly 60 inches, or is there wiggle room?

The 80-inch length comfortably accommodates sleepers up to about 6'4". If you are taller than that, your feet will press against or hang over the end. At that point, a California King (84 inches long) becomes worth considering.

Queen vs. Double: Which Size Do You Need?

This is the comparison question we hear most often in our showroom. A double (also called full) measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. A queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer.

Those numbers tell the real story. A double gives each partner 27 inches of sleeping width. That is less than a crib provides for a baby. A queen bumps that to 30 inches per person, which is enough to roll over without elbowing your partner.

Room Size for a Queen Bed

A queen mattress fits comfortably in a room that is at least 10 feet by 10 feet (100 square feet). That gives you enough clearance for:

• 24 inches of walking space on both sides of the bed
• 30 inches of clearance at the foot for comfortable movement
• Space for two nightstands (18-24 inches wide each)

In a 10' x 12' room, you gain space for a dresser or a reading chair. In a 10' x 10' room, it is tight but workable if you keep furniture minimal.

Frame Types That Work with Queen Mattresses

One thing to watch: some upholstered bed frames have interior dimensions that run 1-2 inches wider than the mattress, leaving a small gap along the edges. This is normal and does not affect sleep quality, but if it bothers you, ask about interior frame width when shopping for bed frames.

Queen Bedding and Sheet Sizes

Getting the right bedding size matters more than most people think. A fitted sheet that is too large bunches up overnight. One that is too small pops off the corners at 3 a.m.

If your mattress is thicker than 14 inches (many pillow-top and hybrid models are 15-16 inches), look for "deep pocket" fitted sheets. Standard pocket depth is 14 inches, and a thicker mattress will cause regular sheets to pop off the corners. The queen works for most people in most bedrooms, which is why it outsells every other size in Canada. But "most" is not "all." Here is an honest breakdown.

The Queen is Right for You If:

• You share the bed with a partner and your bedroom is 10' x 10' or larger
• You sleep solo but want room to spread out without the excess of a king
• You are under 6'4" tall
• You want the widest selection of sheets, protectors, and bedding accessories
• You plan to move at some point (queen mattresses fit through doorways and up stairs much more easily than kings)

Consider a Different Size If:

• Your room is smaller than 10' x 10' (look at a double)
• Either partner is a very restless sleeper and needs maximum personal space (look at a king)
• You are over 6'4" (look at a California king for the extra 4 inches of length)
• You want independent adjustable bed control for each side (look at a split king)
