The Algoma District Communities

The Algoma District stretches along the north shore of Lake Huron and Lake Superior, encompassing some of the most remote and beautiful landscape in Ontario. It includes communities that range from small highway towns to communities accessible primarily by bush road.

Wawa (pop. ~2,900) is the most recognizable name, largely because of its famous Canada Goose statue on Highway 17. But Wawa is also a former gold and iron mining town that has reinvented itself around tourism, outdoor recreation, and its position as a highway service stop between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay.

Blind River (pop. ~3,500) sits on the north shore of the North Channel of Lake Huron. A former timber town with a diversified economy including Cameco's uranium refinery, one of only a few operating uranium refineries in the western world.

Thessalon (pop. ~1,300) is one of the oldest communities in Northern Ontario, settled in the 1840s. A quiet town on Lake Huron with a strong sense of history.

Chapleau (pop. ~1,800) sits at the junction of three rivers in the interior of the district, away from the highway corridor. It is surrounded by the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, the world's largest game preserve at 7,000 square kilometres.

These are small communities. None of them have mattress specialty stores. Most rely on general merchandise retailers, occasional catalogue sales, or trips to Sault Ste. Marie or Sudbury for larger purchases.

The Highway 17 Corridor

Highway 17, the Trans-Canada Highway through the Algoma District, connects Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury with a long, winding route along Lake Superior's north shore. It is one of the most scenic drives in Canada. It is also one of the most isolated. Between communities, you can drive 50 to 100 kilometres without seeing a building.

This isolation defines the retail landscape. A community of 2,000 people, three hours from the nearest city, cannot support the kind of mattress retail available in urban Ontario. The options are whatever the local general store carries, or ordering from a distance.

We are going to be honest about something that most mattress companies would not say: if you live in Wawa, Blind River, Thessalon, or Chapleau, and you are happy with the mattresses available locally or in Sault Ste. Marie, there is no reason to order from us. Support your local businesses. They need the revenue more than we do.
