Reading Time: 10 minutes
Most people have a general sense of whether they sleep well or poorly. Fewer have a clear picture of which specific habits are helping, which are hurting, and what a realistic path to improvement looks like.
This quiz assesses ten areas that sleep research consistently identifies as important to sleep quality: consistency, timing, environment, pre-sleep behaviour, stress, physical comfort, substance use, daytime habits, and morning patterns. Each answer carries a score. Add them up and find out where you actually stand.
Sleep Quality Quiz
For each question, choose the answer that most accurately describes your usual habit , not your best night, not your worst, but your typical week. Be honest. The quiz is only useful if the answers are accurate.
Question 1 of 10: Wake Time Consistency
How consistent is your wake time across the week (including weekends)?
Question 2 of 10: Total Sleep Duration
On a typical night, how many hours of sleep do you get?
Question 3 of 10: Pre-Sleep Screens
How do you use screens (phone, TV, tablet, computer) in the hour before bed?
Question 4 of 10: Bedroom Temperature
What is your bedroom temperature when you sleep?
Question 5 of 10: Caffeine Timing
When do you typically have your last caffeinated drink of the day?
Question 6 of 10: Sleep Onset Time
Once you get into bed with lights off, how long does it typically take you to fall asleep?
Question 7 of 10: Mattress and Pillow Comfort
How comfortable is your sleep surface (mattress and pillow)?
Question 8 of 10: Alcohol Before Bed
How often do you drink alcohol within three hours of bedtime?
Question 9 of 10: Daytime Energy
How would you describe your typical daytime energy and alertness?
Question 10 of 10: Stress and Racing Thoughts
How often do stress, worry, or racing thoughts interfere with falling or staying asleep?
Understanding Your Results
The quiz covers ten dimensions of sleep hygiene. No single question determines your overall sleep health, but patterns across questions reveal where your sleep architecture is most vulnerable.
Score Ranges and What They Mean
- 85–100: Excellent habits. You are doing most things right. Fine-tuning rather than overhaul is the priority.
- 65–84: Good with room to improve. One or two specific habits are the bottleneck. Identify the lowest-scoring areas and address them first.
- 45–64: Moderate , meaningful improvement possible. Several habits are creating interference. Systematic improvements will have a clear impact.
- Below 45: Poor , significant opportunity. Multiple factors are simultaneously undermining sleep quality. Start with the highest-leverage basics: consistent wake time, caffeine before noon, and bedroom temperature.
One thing the quiz cannot capture is whether an underlying sleep disorder is present. If you score high on sleep hygiene but still feel unrefreshed or tired daily, or if you snore loudly and wake gasping, please see a doctor. Sleep apnea affects an estimated 26% of adults between 30 and 70 and is significantly underdiagnosed. No amount of good sleep habits compensates for obstructed breathing.
How to Improve Each Area: The Evidence
The quiz covers ten areas. Here is the research backing for the most impactful changes:
Why Wake Time Consistency Matters Most
The circadian system , the body's 24-hour biological clock , is anchored primarily by light exposure and consistent wake time, not by when you go to bed. Irregular wake times, especially the "social jet lag" of sleeping in on weekends, shift the circadian phase and make it harder to fall asleep at a consistent time. Research in Science Advances using smartphone data from 5,500 adults across 100 countries found that sleep timing irregularity was more strongly associated with poor sleep quality than total sleep duration.
Caffeine and adenosine: Caffeine's half-life is approximately five to six hours in a healthy adult (longer in older adults and people with certain genetic variants). A coffee at 3 p.m. still has significant activity at 9 p.m. The standard advice to stop caffeine by 2 p.m. is scientifically grounded, not arbitrary.
Temperature and sleep onset: Core body temperature drops approximately 1–2°C as part of the normal circadian sleep initiation process. A bedroom that is too warm interferes with this drop and delays sleep onset. The 16–19°C range is well-supported by research as optimal for most adults, though individual variation exists.
Alcohol and sleep architecture: Alcohol causes drowsiness by depressing the central nervous system, but it also suppresses REM sleep in the first half of the night and causes rebound arousal in the second half as it metabolises. Net result: shorter total sleep, more fragmented second-half sleep, and significantly less REM , the stage most associated with emotional processing and memory consolidation.
The Sleep Environment Factor
Several quiz questions address the sleep environment: temperature, mattress comfort, and the physical conditions of your bedroom. These matter more than many people realise because sleep environment issues cause physiological arousals , brief wakings that fragment sleep even if you do not consciously remember them.
When Was Your Last Mattress Assessment?
At Mattress Miracle, one of the most common conversations we have goes like this: a customer tells us they have tried everything , consistent schedule, no screens, chamomile tea , but still wake up unrefreshed. Within five minutes, we learn their mattress is 12 years old and has developed a body impression. Sometimes the answer is genuinely simple. A mattress that no longer provides proper support creates overnight pressure points that cause arousals the sleeper does not consciously register but that prevent deep sleep consolidation. If your mattress scores low on the quiz, it is worth a conversation.
Mattresses typically maintain consistent support for 8–10 years, depending on materials and use. Memory foam softens over time. Innerspring coils can lose tension. A mattress that felt right five years ago may have changed significantly. If you wake with stiffness, numbness, or lower back pain that resolves within an hour or two of being up, your mattress is a probable contributor.
Our Restonic ComfortCare line, starting at $1,619 for a Queen with 1,222 individually wrapped coils, provides consistent zoned support and is well-regarded for maintaining support over its lifetime. Our team at 441½ West Street in Brantford can walk you through the options and let you test them in person , no appointment needed.
Beyond the mattress, the pillow is the most underrated variable. The right loft (height) for your sleep position , lower for stomach sleepers, medium for back sleepers, higher for side sleepers , determines whether your cervical spine is aligned during sleep. Misalignment creates neck tension and overnight arousals. Many people change their mattress and forget the pillow, then wonder why the results are partial.

What is a good sleep score on this quiz?
Scores of 85 and above reflect strong, well-rounded sleep habits. Scores of 65–84 reflect good habits with one or two specific areas to improve. Scores below 65 suggest multiple factors are meaningfully interfering with sleep quality. The quiz is designed as a diagnostic tool rather than a pass/fail assessment , the most useful output is identifying which specific areas to address, not the number itself.
Is this quiz the same as the Sleep Chronotype Quiz?
No , these are different assessments. The Sleep Chronotype Quiz identifies your biological sleep timing preference (Lion, Bear, Wolf, or Dolphin) based on when your body naturally wants to sleep and wake. This Sleep Quality Quiz assesses your sleep habits and hygiene practices , what you actually do around sleep, regardless of your chronotype. Both are useful; they answer different questions.
What should I do if I score low on the physical comfort question?
If your mattress or pillow is regularly causing discomfort or you wake with pain, that is worth addressing directly , sleep hygiene changes will only go so far if the physical sleep surface is creating arousals or pain. Visit us at 441½ West Street in Brantford and our team can help assess whether your current setup is likely contributing to the problem and what options exist at your budget.
Could I have a sleep disorder even if my score is high?
Yes. This quiz measures sleep hygiene habits, not sleep disorders. Conditions like sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy require clinical diagnosis and are not captured by a habits questionnaire. If you consistently feel unrefreshed despite good sleep hygiene, or if you snore loudly or wake gasping, please see your doctor rather than relying on quiz results.
