Every November, the same claim gets recycled across dinner tables from Brantford to British Columbia: the turkey made me sleepy. Someone reaches for a third helping of stuffing, then collapses on the couch, and turkey gets the blame.
The sleeping turkey story is one of the most repeated bits of folk science in North American culture. It is also mostly wrong. Not entirely. But mostly. The reality is more interesting than the myth, and understanding it gives you a clearer picture of how food, sleep chemistry, and your body interact.
The Tryptophan Truth
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, meaning your body cannot produce it and must get it from food. Turkey does contain tryptophan. That part is accurate. The problem is the conclusion people draw from this.
Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, and serotonin is a precursor to melatonin. In theory, eating tryptophan should raise melatonin levels and make you sleepy. This is the chain of logic that gave turkey its drowsy reputation.
The Blood-Brain Barrier Problem
Tryptophan has to cross the blood-brain barrier to be converted into serotonin. The problem is that it competes with several other amino acids for the same transport mechanism. After eating a protein-rich food like turkey, your bloodstream floods with multiple amino acids simultaneously. Tryptophan is actually at a competitive disadvantage. Less of it crosses into the brain than you might expect. To boost brain tryptophan effectively, you need to reduce that competition. And the best way to do that is with carbohydrates.
How Much Tryptophan Is in Turkey?
Turkey contains roughly 250 to 310 milligrams of tryptophan per 100 grams of cooked meat. That sounds meaningful until you compare it to other foods. Cheddar cheese contains about 320 mg per 100 grams. Chicken runs about 290 mg. Pork comes in around 280 mg. Soybeans hit 590 mg per 100 grams.

Nobody blames the roast chicken at Sunday dinner. Nobody falls asleep at the cheese board. Turkey is not uniquely sleep-inducing. Something else is happening at Thanksgiving.
The Carb Connection: The Real Mechanism
Here is where it gets genuinely interesting. Carbohydrates are the missing piece of the sleeping turkey puzzle.
When you eat carbohydrates, your pancreas releases insulin. Insulin drives glucose into cells, but it also clears most amino acids from the bloodstream. The exception is tryptophan, which binds to albumin (a blood protein) and is not cleared as efficiently by insulin.
The result: after a carbohydrate-heavy meal, tryptophan's competitors are cleared from the blood while tryptophan remains. Its ratio relative to other amino acids rises dramatically. More of it crosses into the brain. Serotonin synthesis increases. Melatonin can follow.
This is the actual mechanism. Turkey is not the cause. The mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls, and pie are the cause. Turkey is just the protein that happened to be on the plate.
The Canadian Thanksgiving Version
In Canada, Thanksgiving lands in October, which means slightly different weather, slightly earlier darkness, and the same enormous meal. The carbohydrate mechanism works identically whether you are sitting down in early October or late November. If anything, the earlier sunset in October Brantford means melatonin is already rising by the time dinner is served, which may compound the post-meal drowsiness. The turkey is still not the culprit.
Why Carbs Work This Way
The insulin-driven clearance of amino acids is one of the cleaner mechanisms in nutritional neuroscience. Circadian Timing
A phenomenon called the post-lunch dip describes a natural mid-afternoon drop in alertness that occurs regardless of eating. It is driven by circadian biology, not food. Thanksgiving dinner often overlaps with this window, particularly for families who eat at 2 or 3 p.m. The meal gets the blame for a dip that would have happened anyway.
What Actually Happens in Your Body After a Big Meal
Let us map the sequence from plate to couch.
You eat. Your digestive system begins processing a large volume of food. Insulin rises in response to carbohydrates. Most amino acids are cleared from the bloodstream. Tryptophan's relative ratio increases and more crosses into the brain. Serotonin synthesis rises. Over the following hours, some of that serotonin is converted to melatonin, particularly if the light environment is dim or evening is approaching. Meanwhile, digestion demands blood flow, and parasympathetic activation signals relaxation. If you have had wine, alcohol compounds the sedation. The couch looks very appealing.
None of this is turkey's fault. Turkey is just the vehicle for protein at a carbohydrate-dominated feast.

The sleepiness that follows a large meal has a technical name: postprandial somnolence. It is a real, documented physiological phenomenon. Research has linked it to meal size, carbohydrate content, circadian phase, and blood glucose fluctuations. Studies using controlled dietary conditions have shown that meal composition affects subsequent alertness levels, with high-carbohydrate, high-fat meals producing greater post-meal sleepiness than protein-rich, lower-carbohydrate alternatives. The turkey alone, as a lean protein, would be among the less somnolent options on the table.
How to Sleep Well After a Holiday Meal
The holiday meal itself is not going away. But how you manage the hours after it can affect how well you sleep that night.
Do Not Eat Too Close to Bedtime
If Thanksgiving dinner is at 5 p.m. and you are in bed by 10, digestion has mostly completed and core body temperature will have dropped appropriately. If you eat at 8 p.m. and try to sleep at 10, your digestive system is still working hard, your core temperature is elevated, and sleep quality suffers. Try to finish the main meal at least three hours before bed.
Limit Alcohol in the Evening
One glass of wine with dinner is different from three glasses spread across four hours. The more alcohol in your system at bedtime, the more it will fragment your sleep in the second half of the night. You may fall asleep easily and wake at 3 a.m. feeling poor. Alcohol's half-life is roughly one hour per drink, so stopping early gives it time to clear.
A Short Walk Helps

Partially false. Dietary tryptophan can raise brain tryptophan levels, but only when competing amino acids are cleared by insulin. Eating turkey without carbohydrates would produce a much smaller effect because of the competitive amino acid transport problem.
Myth: The Drowsiness Means You Are Getting Better Sleep That Night
Not necessarily. Post-meal drowsiness from a large holiday meal does not translate to better sleep quality. If you have consumed alcohol, your sleep architecture will be disrupted. If you napped in the afternoon, your sleep pressure will be lower. The post-meal feeling of sleepiness is not the same as restorative sleep.
