Quick Answer: The best snoring solution depends on your anatomy. Nasal strips work for congestion. Mouthguards work for jaw/throat collapse (but hurt). Anti-snore pillows work by keeping you on your side or elevating your neck. For a permanent, non-invasive fix, an adjustable bed uses gravity to open the airway without touching your face.

Reading Time: 5 minutes
If you walked into a pharmacy in Brantford looking for a snoring cure, you would be overwhelmed. There are walls of devices: chin straps, nose clips, specialized pillows, and plastic guards.
They all promise silence. Most deliver disappointment.
At Mattress Miracle, we aren't doctors, but we are sleep mechanics. We understand that snoring is a mechanical problem, air vibrating against tissue. To stop the noise, you have to stabilize the tissue.
The Snoring Toolbox
Before you buy a gadget, you need to know where you snore. Is it your nose (a whistle) or your throat (a rumble)?
- Nose Snorers: Need to widen the nostrils (Strips).
- Throat Snorers: Need to stop the tongue from falling back (Mouthguards or Elevation).
- Mouth Breathers: Need to keep the jaw closed (Tape or Chin Straps).

Do "Anti-Snore" Pillows Work?
Most anti-snore pillows work on one of two principles:
- Positional Therapy: They have a ridge down the middle that makes it uncomfortable to sleep on your back, forcing you onto your side. Since back sleeping causes the most snoring, this works,if you stay on your side.
- Cervical Alignment: They are contoured to tilt the chin slightly upward, opening the airway (like CPR position).
The Verdict: Helpful for mild snoring, but often uncomfortable if you move around a lot. If you roll off the "sweet spot," the snoring returns.
Strips vs. Mouth Tape: The Airway Battle
Nasal Strips (Breathe Right): These are stiff adhesive bandages that physically pull your nostrils open. They are excellent for deviated septums or winter congestion. They are drug-free and safe.
Mouth Tape: This is a newer trend. You tape your lips shut to force nasal breathing. While nasal breathing is healthier, taping is controversial.
The Safety Warning
If you have a stuffed nose and tape your mouth shut, you will suffocate. If you need to vomit in your sleep (due to illness or alcohol), tape is dangerous. While effective for some, we recommend consulting a doctor before taping your airway shut.

Mouthguards: The Nuclear Option
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) look like hockey mouthguards. They lock your lower jaw forward, pulling the tongue away from the back of the throat.
Pros: Extremely effective. They physically force the airway open.
Cons: Pain. Waking up with a sore jaw (TMJ) and shifted bite is common. They are intrusive and require high compliance. Many end up in the nightstand drawer after a week.
The "Zero Contact" Solution
If you hate things on your face, try an Adjustable Base. Elevating the head of the bed 15 degrees stops gravity from collapsing the throat tissue. It works for both nose and throat snorers, requires no plastic in your mouth, and you just press a button. Come test the "Anti-Snore" setting at our West Street showroom.

Call 519-770-0001Do chin straps work?
Only if you are a "mouth breather" who snores because your jaw drops open. If your snoring comes from your throat collapsing, a chin strap won't help and might actually make it harder to breathe.
Are custom dental guards worth the money?
If you have sleep apnea and can't tolerate CPAP, yes. A dentist-made guard ($1,500+) fits perfectly and minimizes jaw pain. Store-bought "boil and bite" guards ($40) are bulky and often cause drooling and discomfort.
Does losing weight stop snoring?
Often, yes. Neck fat pushes down on the airway when you lie flat. Losing even 10lbs can reduce neck circumference enough to significantly quiet the noise.
Why does alcohol make snoring worse?
Alcohol relaxes the throat muscles (hypotonia). This makes the tissue "floppy" and more likely to collapse and vibrate. Avoiding alcohol 3 hours before bed is the cheapest snoring cure.
