Sofa Beds and Foldable Couches: Best Options in Canada

Quick Answer: The best sofa bed depends on how many nights someone sleeps on it. A fold-down click-clack or futon suits a few guest nights a year; nightly sleepers need a thicker mattress or real bed. Mattress Miracle's ready-to-sleep sofa beds start at $589.99, and Mattress Insider puts a typical pull-out mattress at 72 inches long and 4 to 5 inches thick.

A sofa bed is a couch that turns into a bed, either by dropping its back flat or by pulling a folded mattress out from under the seat. Our sofa beds and futon frames collection carries click-clack sofas and futon frames from $275. Mattress Miracle has been a family-owned store in Brantford since 1997. The first thing our advisors ask about a couch that converts into a bed is how many nights someone will sleep on it.

A click-clack sofa is a fold-down couch with a hinged back that locks upright for sitting and drops flat for sleeping. The name comes from the clicks the hinge makes. You sleep on the same foam you sit on, so the sofa stays light, and the models we carry get only 7 to 10 inches deeper when opened.

A pull-out sofa, also called a sleeper sofa, hides a folded mattress on a steel frame under its seat cushions. Mattress Insider, a US seller of replacement sofa bed mattresses, lists pull-out mattresses at 72 inches long and says most frames take one 4 to 5 inches thick. That makes a pull-out 3 inches shorter than a standard Canadian twin or double, and 8 inches shorter than a queen.

Foldable Couches: What Type of Sofa Folds Down Into a Bed?

Four types of sofa fold down or open into a bed: the click-clack (also called split-back), the futon, the pull-out sleeper sofa, and convertibles such as daybeds and wall beds. What separates them is the surface you actually sleep on. For frames that don't fold at all, see our visual guide to every bed type.

Type How it becomes a bed What you sleep on Extra floor when open Best for
Click-clack / split-back Back drops flat in one motion The seat and back foam 7 to 10 inches deeper (our models) Small rooms, a few guest nights
Futon Bi-fold frame lays flat A removable futon mattress (double is 54 x 75 in) Depends on the frame Basements, offices, teens
Pull-out sleeper sofa Mattress unfolds from under the seat A 4 to 5 inch mattress, 72 in long The full mattress length in front Regular guests who want a separate mattress
Daybed or wall bed with sofa Always a bed, or folds down from the wall A standard mattress None (daybed) or a full bed (wall bed) Rooms that are a bedroom most nights

The click-clack depths come from our own listings: the Solara opens from 35 to 42 inches deep and the Orionis from 35 to 45. If the room will be a bedroom most nights, start with our guides to daybeds in Canada and space-saving Murphy beds.

What Is a Pull-Out Sofa and How Does It Work?

A pull-out sofa is a couch with a folding steel bed frame and a thin mattress hidden under its seat cushions. To open one, you lift off the cushions, pull the frame forward by its handle and let the legs unfold until the mattress lies flat.

The pull-out mattress is thin because it has to fold away inside the sofa. With only 4 to 5 inches of padding, many sleepers feel the support bar that crosses the frame under their hips. If you already feel that bar, our guide to what makes a pull-out actually comfortable walks through the fixes.

Pros and cons of pull-out sofa beds

  • Pro: the mattress is separate, so you can replace it without replacing the sofa
  • Pro: full and queen widths for two guests
  • Con: heavier than a fold-down, because of the steel frame
  • Con: needs a mattress length of clear floor in front of the sofa

If you already own a pull-out, Mattress Miracle can help with the mattress. Our guide to the best sofa bed mattresses in Canada compares replacements, and our custom cuts fit frames that standard sizes don't.

Click-Clack and Futon Folding Couches We Carry

Mattress Miracle carries the click-clack and futon folding couches in the table below. The numbers come from our product pages, checked October 9, 2026, and the weight ratings are the manufacturer's ceilings.

Model Design As a sofa (L x D x H) As a bed Weight rating Price
Solara Futon Sofa Bed Split back, memory foam, grey fabric 71 x 35 x 32 in 71 x 42 in 400 lb $599.99

Loveseat Sleeper Sofa Bed Split back, removable arms, steel frame 82 x 36 x 32 in 82 x 43 in 500 lb $835
Orionis Leather Sofa Bed Split back, PU leather, adjustable arms 74 x 35 x 35 in 74 x 45 in 450 lb $899.99

Futon Frame with Wooden Sides Bi-fold, locks in both positions, mattress sold separately Double Takes a 54 x 75 in futon mattress Not listed $435

The Solara and Lyra are 71 inches long, 4 inches shorter than a standard 75-inch double, so a tall guest's feet may hang off the end. The Loveseat Sleeper is the long one at 82 inches. Outside the table, the collection also lists the Nova Sofa Bed at $589.99, its lowest-priced ready-to-sleep model.

A futon frame needs its own mattress. Our double futon mattress measures 54 x 75 inches and costs $243 in any of five colours, so the metal frame and mattress together come to $518. The futon beds collection puts the frames, the mattress and a futon bunk bed ($500) side by side.

Sofa Bed Sizes and Dimensions Compared to Regular Beds

Sofa bed sizes run shorter and often narrower than regular mattresses, which changes who fits and which sheets fit. The table puts pull-out sizes, standard Canadian sizes and our fold-down surfaces side by side. For the tightest rooms, our loveseat sleeper guide compares compact two-seat options.

Width decides how many people a sofa bed sleeps. In a 1980 Human Factors study, Mark Sanders measured 239 truck and bus drivers lying in three sleep postures. The US federal minimum berth of the time, 0.61 m (24 inches), was too narrow for over 40% of them. Sanders recommended 0.84 m (33 inches) to fit 90%. By that yardstick a 42 to 45 inch click-clack suits one adult, and two adults would want about 66 inches, more than a 60-inch pull-out queen.

Length decides the sheets. A 72-inch pull-out is 3 inches shorter than the 75-inch twin in our twin mattress size guide for Canada. A 52-inch pull-out full is 2 inches narrower than the double in our full versus queen dimensions guide. Standard fitted sheets will sit loose, so measure the surface before you buy sheets for the sofa bed.

Couch or Bed: Can You Sleep on a Sofa Bed Every Night?

You can sleep on a sofa bed every night if the surface supports you, though most are built for guests first. A fold-down sofa puts you on seat foam that also takes daily sitting, and a pull-out puts you on a 4 to 5 inch folding mattress. Our own futon mattress listing says the same: occasional guests sleep comfortably, and someone sleeping on it every night for years will feel the difference.

The Sleep Foundation, in a page medically reviewed by Nilong Vyas, MD, says couch sleeping may prompt neck or back pain, especially when it's regular. If the sofa bed will be someone's only bed, our sofa bed versus real mattress comparison sets the two side by side.

What the Research and Health Agencies Say

A small 2009 study in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine by Jacobson, Boolani and Smith followed 59 healthy adults with minor sleep-related aches and poor sleep. Their own beds averaged 9.5 years old. After 28 days on new medium-firm beds, they reported about 48% less back pain and 55% better sleep quality. The study tested regular beds, so for a worn sofa bed mattress it is a pointer only.

HealthLink BC says to call your doctor now if back pain wakes you from sleep, or comes with new or worse numbness or weakness in your legs. The same goes for a new loss of bowel or bladder control, or back pain with a fever and painful urination. Call 9-1-1 if back pain comes with chest pain or other heart attack symptoms, or follows a fall, crash or blow to the spine.

Babies need a different plan. The Canadian Paediatric Society says to avoid couches and sofas for a baby's sleep, because a baby can bury their face in the soft surface. For the first 6 months it advises a crib, cradle or bassinet in the parents' room, so never put an infant to sleep on a sofa bed.

This information is general and is not medical advice. If you have ongoing back or neck pain, ask your doctor, physiotherapist or chiropractor before choosing where to sleep. Mattress Miracle fits beds; we don't diagnose or treat.

For someone who will sleep on it nightly, our guide to the best mattress for back pain in Canada explains what support to look for in a real bed.

The Mattress Inside a Sofa Bed and When to Replace It

The mattress inside a sofa bed is usually its weakest part, because it has to fold away. Each type wears differently:

  • A pull-out mattress is 4 to 5 inches of foam or innerspring, and it can be swapped on its own.
  • A click-clack's sleeping surface is its seat foam, which carries weight every day. When it dips, the whole sofa is due.
  • A futon mattress lifts off the frame, so a worn one can be swapped for one of our replacement futon mattresses.

Replace a sofa bed mattress when you can feel the frame or crossbar through it, or when it holds a dip after you get up.

Mattress Miracle cuts mattresses to order for sofa beds. Any Sleep In foam mattress, and every Restonic, Restonit and C.J. Mulholland model, can be made to your frame's measurements in two to three weeks. Each one is quoted individually, and we confirm every measurement by phone before cutting. Custom cuts are excluded from our 60-Night Comfort Guarantee, because a cut mattress can't be resold. Start on our custom size mattress service page.

Our 5-inch Restonit foam mattress is $86 in twin on sale (regularly $105), and a custom cut of it starts at $105. It carries no warranty, cut or standard. Five inches matches what most pull-out frames take. Our other foam mattresses are 6 inches or thicker, so check that your frame still closes.

How to Choose a Sofa Bed for Your Room

Step 1: Measure the Room in Both Positions

Measure the wall for the sofa, then the floor the open bed covers. Our click-clacks add 7 to 10 inches of depth. A pull-out needs its full mattress length in front, plus room to walk past the foot of the bed.

Step 2: Measure the Way In

Ontario's guide to building a tiny home says the Building Code requires a tiny home's exterior door to be at least 810 mm (2 feet 8 inches) wide. Its bathroom doors need only 610 mm (24 inches). Your own doors may be wider or narrower, so measure the actual opening, every hallway turn and any stairs.

Step 3: Check the Weight Rating

Our fold-down models are rated from 400 to 500 lb, and the IF-208 metal futon frame from 400 to 600 lb. Treat the rating as a ceiling. Two adults on a 400 lb frame can already be close to the limit.

Step 4: Test the Mechanism

Open and close the sofa bed before you buy it. It should move with moderate effort and lock firmly in both positions, with no wobble as a sofa or sag as a bed. The lock on our wooden-sided futon frame keeps it from shifting when someone sits on the edge.

Step 5: Sit, Then Lie Down for Ten Minutes

Many sofa beds feel fine for 30 seconds and poor after ten minutes. Sit, then lie down in your usual sleep position. If you can feel the frame or a crossbar in that time, so will your guests.

How to Make a Sofa Bed More Comfortable

Three changes make a sofa bed more comfortable, roughly in order of cost:

  1. Add a topper. A 2 or 3 inch topper evens out the seam between click-clack cushions and pads a pull-out crossbar. Our mattress toppers start with the So Sleepy 2-inch copper topper at $199 in twin and $219 in full. Our topper guide for sofa beds covers storing one between visits.
  2. Use real bedding sized to the surface. A fitted sheet that matches the width, a proper pillow and a real duvet do more than any throw blanket. Our duvet versus comforter guide helps with guest bedding, and our pillow fitting guide covers the pillow.
  3. Protect, then replace, the mattress. A thin, flexible mattress protector folds with a futon without bunching. When the mattress itself is worn, a foam replacement cut to size makes the biggest difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a foldable couch bed?

A foldable couch bed is any sofa that converts into a sleeping surface by folding, pulling out or rearranging its parts. Click-clack, split-back, futon, collapsible sofa bed, sleeper sofa and pull-out couch are all names for one.

What type of sofa bed is the most comfortable?

For sleeping, a sofa bed with its own mattress is usually more comfortable than one where you sleep on the seat foam. That means a pull-out, or a futon frame with a thicker futon mattress. A 2 or 3 inch topper over either one helps, especially over a pull-out crossbar.

Can you use a sleeper sofa every night?

You can, if the mattress supports the sleeper. Most sleeper sofas are built for guests, and their 4 to 5 inch mattresses wear faster under nightly use. Plan on a topper, a replacement mattress cut to the frame or a real bed.

Can sleeping on a couch cause back pain?

It can. According to the Sleep Foundation, regular couch sleeping may prompt neck or back pain, because couches are built for sitting. If back pain wakes you at night or comes with leg numbness or weakness, HealthLink BC advises calling your doctor now. For the longer answer, read what couch sleeping does to your body.

Is it okay to sleep on a futon every night?

It can be, for one sleeper on a thick futon mattress and a sturdy frame. Thin futon mattresses compress quickly with nightly use, and a real mattress suits a primary bed better. Anyone planning nightly use should read the futon guide for everyday sleepers first.

What is more comfortable, a futon or a sofa bed?

A futon with a good mattress usually sleeps better than a click-clack, because the mattress is a separate layer you can upgrade. Our double futon mattress is 54 x 75 inches, wider than our 42 to 45 inch click-clacks. For a fuller comparison, see the futon couch buying guide.

How long do sofa bed mattresses last?

A mattress opened a few times a year lasts far longer than one slept on nightly. Replace it when you feel the frame through it or it keeps a dip. A pull-out or futon mattress can be replaced without buying a new sofa.

Will a sofa bed fit through my doorway?

Measure first. Ontario's tiny-home Building Code guide gives 810 mm (2 feet 8 inches) as the minimum exterior door width for a tiny home. Our Solara futon sofa bed is 32 inches tall and 35 inches deep, so check doorways, hallway turns and stairs against both numbers.

What is the best sofa bed in Canada?

The best sofa bed fits your room, your door and your guests, locks firmly in both positions and has a published weight rating. In Brantford, Mattress Miracle sells ready-to-sleep sofa beds from $589.99 and futon frames from $275, with the futon mattress sold separately.
