What's a split king? Two Twin XL mattresses side by side (each 38x80"). Total equals a standard King. Usually paired with adjustable bases.
Why get a split king? Each person adjusts their own side. Great if one of you snores, has reflux, or just likes different positions. We sell a lot of these to couples who finally stopped arguing about firmness.
Is there a gap? Small gap between the mattresses. Most people don't notice during sleep. Bed bridges can fill it if it bothers you.
Split King Beds: When One Mattress Isn't Working
You like firm. Your partner likes soft. You run hot. They're always cold. You want to read with your head raised. They want to sleep flat. After years of compromise that satisfies neither of you, there's another option: stop sharing a mattress.
What a Split King Actually Is
A split king is two twin XL mattresses placed side by side on one king frame. Same bed footprint as a regular king. Same sheet size fits over both. But underneath, each person has their own sleep surface.
The dimensions work out: two twin XLs (each 38" x 80") make a king (76" x 80"). You don't lose space. You gain independence.
Why Couples Go Split
Different Firmness Preferences
The number one reason. One person needs firm support for their back. The other needs soft cushioning for their hips. With a shared mattress, someone always compromises. With a split king, both get exactly what works.
Different Temperatures
If one person sleeps hot and wants a cooling mattress while the other wants cozy memory foam, a shared mattress forces a choice. Split kings let each person choose materials suited to their temperature needs.
Different Positions
Paired with adjustable bases, split kings let one person elevate their head for reading or breathing while the other sleeps flat. One person can raise their legs for circulation while the other doesn't.
Motion Isolation
Even the best motion-isolating mattresses transfer some movement. Separate mattresses transfer zero. If your partner tosses all night, or gets up frequently for the bathroom, you feel nothing.
Medical Needs
When one partner has acid reflux, sleep apnea, chronic pain, or needs specific positioning, they can get exactly what they need without forcing the other person into the same setup.
The Awkward Middle Question
The most common concern: won't there be a gap between the mattresses? Won't you roll into the crack?
Short answer: not really. With quality mattresses and proper setup, the two surfaces meet flush. A king-size fitted sheet pulls them together. Some couples add a mattress connector strap underneath for extra security.
In practice, couples report that after the first week they forget it's two mattresses. The seam in the middle doesn't create the problem people imagine.
What About Intimacy?
Also a common concern. The mattresses are right next to each other. There's no barrier between them. You can move from one side to the other without issue. For intimacy, the split configuration doesn't create obstacles.
In fact, many couples report that better sleep on each individual mattress improves their relationship overall. Rested partners are happier partners.
Adjustable Base Options
Split kings work with:
- Single adjustable bases that move as one unit (less useful for different needs)
- Two twin XL adjustable bases with independent controls (the full benefit)
- Regular king frame without adjustment (still gives mattress independence)
For most couples going split, the dual adjustable setup is the point. Each person has their own remote, their own positions, their own control.
The Cost Reality
Split king setups cost more than single king mattresses. You're buying two mattresses plus potentially two adjustable bases. The investment is roughly 50-80% more than a single king setup.
But consider: how many mattresses have you replaced trying to find a compromise that works for both of you? How much has sleep deprivation cost in health, mood, and relationship stress? For couples with genuinely incompatible sleep needs, split king often ends up being the last mattress purchase they have to agonize over.
Bedding for Split Kings
King-size fitted sheets work across both mattresses. Some couples use separate flat sheets/blankets for temperature control. Comforters and duvets work normally across the whole bed.
The only tricky part: mattress protectors. You might want two twin XL protectors rather than one king protector, so each side is protected independently.
Delivery and Setup
Two twin XL mattresses are actually easier to get into difficult spaces than one king mattress. Narrow stairs? Tight corners? Heritage homes in Brantford with tricky access? Split king solves the delivery problem that regular kings create.
Is Split King Right for You?
Ask these questions:
- Do you and your partner have different firmness preferences?
- Does one of you disturb the other's sleep with movement?
- Do you have different medical needs that affect sleep positioning?
- Have you struggled to find a single mattress that works for both?
If yes to any of these, split king is worth exploring. If you mostly agree on what you need and don't disturb each other, a regular king might be fine.
