Spring vs Foam Mattress: Which Lasts Longer?

Quick Answer: Quality matters more than type. A budget innerspring lasts 5-6 years; a quality spring mattress lasts 10-12 years. All-foam mattresses typically last 7-10 years, but lower-density memory foam starts sagging noticeably after 5-7 years. Hybrids, when well-made, can reach 10-12 years. The honest answer: durability is a function of construction quality, not just coils versus foam.

Why Durability Is the Right Question

Most mattress comparisons focus on how a mattress feels on night one. That is useful, but it skips the question most Brantford shoppers eventually ask: how long will this thing actually hold up?

A mattress that feels great for two years and then sags badly is not a good purchase, no matter how comfortable the first impression was. When you factor in lifespan and replacement cost, the economics of spring versus foam look very different from the showroom sticker price.

The straightforward answer most people want -- springs last longer than foam, or foam lasts longer than springs -- does not hold up under scrutiny. Both material types span an enormous quality range, and quality predicts longevity far better than material type alone.

Innerspring Mattress Lifespan

A well-made innerspring mattress, with a high coil count and quality tempered steel, typically lasts 8 to 12 years before it degrades enough to affect sleep quality. The coil system itself is resilient. Steel springs return to their original shape after compression, which is why a good innerspring mattress maintains its feel over many years.

The weak point in most innerspring mattresses is not the coils -- it is the comfort layers above them. Fibre fill, foam quilt layers, and pillow tops compress and degrade over time, often faster than the coil system beneath. When an innerspring mattress develops a body impression, it is usually the comfort materials failing, not the springs.

Coil count and gauge matter. A queen-size mattress with 800 or more individually wrapped (pocket) coils of 13-15 gauge steel will significantly outlast a mattress with 400 Bonnell coils of 17 gauge steel. The Restonic ComfortCare at Mattress Miracle uses 1,222 individually wrapped coils in a queen, that coil density supports durability as well as comfort.

Budget innerspring mattresses at the $300-500 range typically use lower-gauge steel with fewer coils and thinner comfort layers. These wear out in 5-6 years. Mid-range innersprings ($700-1,200) reach 8-10 years. A well-built premium spring mattress at $1,200 and above can reach 10-12 years or more.

All-Foam Mattress Lifespan

All-foam mattresses, including memory foam, polyfoam base layers, and latex, generally last 7-10 years. The limiting factor is foam degradation -- most foam materials break down over time, losing their structural integrity and contouring ability.

Memory foam, in particular, degrades in a way that affects sleep quality before the mattress looks obviously worn. The foam softens unevenly, developing permanent body impressions. In lower-density memory foam (below 3 lb per cubic foot), this can happen within 4-5 years. Higher-density memory foam (4-5 lb per cubic foot) holds up significantly better, reaching 7-9 years before noticeable degradation.

The invisible degradation problem. Foam mattresses do not sag visually the way a spring mattress might. Body impressions in foam can be 1-2 inches without being obvious when you look at the bed. This makes it harder to recognise when a foam mattress has crossed the line from "still fine" to "causing back pain."

Natural latex foam stands apart from memory foam in durability. Quality latex mattresses routinely last 12-15 years because latex retains its elastic properties far longer than synthetic foam. Latex is significantly more expensive, but the longevity makes it competitive on a cost-per-year basis.

Base polyfoam layers, which sit beneath memory foam in many all-foam mattresses, also degrade and are rarely replaceable. When the base layer goes, the mattress is done regardless of how the top memory foam layer feels.

Hybrid Mattress Lifespan

Hybrids combine a coil support system (usually pocket coils) with foam or latex comfort layers. The coil foundation provides structural durability, while the foam layers provide the comfort feel. When built to a reasonable quality standard, hybrids last 8-12 years.

The hybrid's advantage is that the coil system does not degrade the same way foam does. The foam comfort layers still compress over time, but you get the resilience of steel supporting the structure beneath. Cheaper hybrids with thin, low-density foam comfort layers will degrade faster -- the foam wears out while the coils remain functional.

Cost-Per-Year Comparison

Looking at cost per year of useful life reframes the mattress buying decision considerably. A mattress that costs more but lasts years longer often works out cheaper annually.

Mattress Type Price Range Est. Lifespan Cost Per Year
Budget innerspring $300-500 5-6 years $50-100/yr
Mid-range innerspring $700-1,200 8-10 years $70-150/yr
Premium innerspring (e.g. Restonic) $1,100-1,500 10-12 years $91-150/yr
Budget all-foam $300-600 4-6 years $50-150/yr
Mid-range memory foam $600-1,000 7-9 years $67-143/yr
Natural latex $1,500-2,500 12-15 years $100-208/yr
Quality hybrid $900-1,500 8-12 years $75-188/yr

The key takeaway from this table: the difference between a budget mattress and a quality mattress, in annual cost terms, is often $50-80 per year. Spread over a decade, spending $400-600 more upfront on a well-made mattress is almost always the better financial decision.

How Quality Tier Changes Everything

The single most important lesson in mattress durability research is this: a premium foam mattress outlasts a cheap innerspring. A premium innerspring outlasts a cheap foam mattress. The material type matters less than where in the quality range you are purchasing.

What we carry at Mattress Miracle. The Restonic ComfortCare line (queen at $1,619 with 1,222 individually wrapped coils) represents the mid-to-upper quality tier for innerspring construction. The Restonic Revive Reflections, a flippable double-sided queen at $1,395, extends useful life further because you can flip it, essentially dividing the wear between two sleep surfaces. The Sleep In line gives you a Canadian-made flippable innerspring option at a competitive price point.

A flippable mattress deserves special mention in any durability conversation. Most modern mattresses are one-sided and cannot be flipped, meaning the comfort layers only bear weight from one direction. A two-sided mattress like the Restonic Revive or Sleep In allows you to alternate sides every 3-6 months, which significantly reduces uneven compression and can add years to the mattress's useful life.

Signs Your Mattress Has Worn Out

Regardless of type, a mattress has reached the end of its useful life when you notice any of the following:

  • Body impressions deeper than 1 inch (some warranties use 1.5 inches as the threshold)
  • You wake up with back or hip pain that resolves after getting up
  • You sleep better at hotels or on other mattresses than at home
  • The mattress squeaks or creaks (innerspring coil fatigue)
  • You can feel the coil structure through the comfort layers
  • The edges collapse significantly when you sit on them

Dorothy's Note: The "hotel test" is one of the more reliable indicators we hear from customers. If you're regularly sleeping better away from home than in your own bed, and your mattress is more than 7-8 years old, it's worth coming in for a look at what's changed in mattress construction since your last purchase.

Many customers wait until their mattress is visibly failing before replacing it, but sleep quality degrades gradually -- so gradually that it can be hard to notice you're sleeping worse than you were two years ago. If your mattress is 8+ years old and you're not sleeping as well as you used to, the mattress is the most likely culprit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a spring mattress last longer than a foam mattress?

Not categorically. A high-quality spring mattress (well-tempered coils, good coil count, durable comfort layers) can last 10-12 years. A high-quality foam or latex mattress can match or exceed that. A cheap spring mattress lasts about as long as a cheap foam mattress -- roughly 5-6 years. Quality tier is the more reliable predictor than material type.

How long should I expect a memory foam mattress to last?

A mid-to-upper quality memory foam mattress (4+ lb per cubic foot density) typically lasts 7-9 years. Budget memory foam (under 3 lb per cubic foot) may show significant compression and body impressions within 4-5 years. The foam density specification, if the retailer provides it, is the single most useful quality indicator.

Is a flippable mattress more durable than a non-flippable one?

Yes, generally. A two-sided mattress allows you to alternate sleep surfaces, which means each side wears at roughly half the rate it would as a one-sided mattress. Regularly flipping (every 3-6 months) and rotating a two-sided mattress can meaningfully extend its useful life compared to a one-sided model at the same quality level.

What voids a mattress warranty related to durability?

Most warranties require the mattress to be used on a proper support base (a sagging box spring or slatted frame with gaps wider than 3 inches can void coverage). Using the mattress without a waterproof protector won't void the warranty itself, but stains on the mattress are used by some manufacturers to deny claims, as they indicate the mattress was not properly protected.

Can I extend my mattress lifespan?

Yes. Use a quality mattress protector (prevents moisture and stain damage to foam and fibre layers). Rotate the mattress 180 degrees every 3-6 months even if it is one-sided (head-to-foot rotation distributes wear). Use an appropriate base with adequate support. Avoid sitting on the same edge repeatedly. These habits genuinely add years to mattress life.
