Quick Answer: A standard crib mattress in Canada measures 69.2 cm x 131.1 cm (27.25" x 51.625") with a maximum thickness of 15 cm (6 inches). This size fits standard full-size cribs with interior dimensions of approximately 71.1 cm x 132.1 cm. The maximum gap between mattress and crib frame is 3 cm on any side.

Standard Full-Size Crib Mattress
The standard crib mattress size is regulated by Health Canada under the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations (SOR-2016-152). The minimum dimensions are 69.2 cm x 131.1 cm (27.25" x 51.625"). The maximum thickness is 15 cm (6 inches).
These dimensions are designed to fit standard full-size cribs with interior frames measuring approximately 71.1 cm x 132.1 cm (28" x 52"). The 1-2 cm difference between the mattress and frame dimensions is intentional. It allows the mattress to be inserted and removed while maintaining a gap no wider than 3 cm on any side.
Why the Exact Size Matters
The 3 cm maximum gap is not arbitrary. Infants can become trapped between a mattress and crib wall in gaps that seem impossibly narrow to adults. This is one of the most common crib-related injuries reported to Health Canada. The standard size exists specifically to prevent this.
Good news: because the dimensions are regulated, any mattress labelled "standard crib size" or "full-size crib mattress" sold through a Canadian retailer will fit any standard crib. You do not need to match brands.
Mini Crib Mattress
Mini crib mattresses measure approximately 61 cm x 96.5 cm (24" x 38"). These are smaller than standard crib mattresses and are designed for compact nurseries, apartments, or as secondary sleep spaces (such as grandparents' homes).
Important: mini crib mattresses and standard crib mattresses are not interchangeable. A standard mattress will not fit a mini crib, and a mini mattress used in a standard crib will leave dangerous gaps on all sides.
Mini crib mattress dimensions are less standardized than full-size. Some manufacturers use slightly different dimensions, so always check your specific mini crib's interior measurements before buying a replacement mattress.
Portable Crib and Pack 'n Play
Portable cribs and Pack 'n Plays come with their own mattress pads, and this is the only mattress you should use with them. These pads are intentionally thin (about 2.5 cm / 1 inch) for safety reasons. A thicker mattress can create suffocation risk in a portable enclosure.
Do not add extra padding, toppers, or aftermarket mattresses to a portable crib. The product is safety-tested with its included pad only.
Toddler Mattress
Most toddler beds use the same mattress dimensions as standard cribs: 69.2 cm x 131.1 cm. If your crib converts to a toddler bed, you can continue using the same mattress.
The difference is firmness. Some dual-sided crib mattresses have a softer toddler side. Once your child is over 12 months, you can flip the mattress to the toddler side for slightly more comfort. The infant side should always face up for babies under one year.
When your child outgrows the toddler bed (usually between ages three and five), the next step is typically a twin mattress (96.5 cm x 190.5 cm). This is where Mattress Miracle can help directly. We carry the full Restonic range starting at the twin size.
How to Measure Your Crib
If you are unsure whether your crib is standard or mini, measure the interior dimensions:
Measuring Steps
- Remove any existing mattress from the crib.
- Measure the interior width at the widest point (side to side).
- Measure the interior length at the longest point (end to end).
- If your measurements are approximately 71 cm x 132 cm, you have a standard crib. Buy a standard crib mattress.
- If your measurements are approximately 62 cm x 97 cm, you have a mini crib. Buy a mini crib mattress.
- If your measurements do not match either size, you may have a specialty or vintage crib. Contact the manufacturer for mattress specifications.
Dorothy, our sleep specialist, adds: "Parents sometimes inherit cribs from family. Older cribs may not meet current safety standards, and finding a properly fitting mattress can be difficult. If your crib is more than ten years old, consider whether it meets current Health Canada regulations before buying a new mattress for it."
A Note on Vintage and Antique Cribs
Brantford has many families with cribs passed down through generations. While the sentiment is lovely, cribs manufactured before 2016 may not comply with current SOR-2016-152 standards. Drop-side cribs, in particular, were banned in Canada in 2016 due to entrapment and suffocation risks. If you have a pre-2016 crib, check Health Canada's product recall database before using it.

What is the standard crib mattress size in centimetres?
A standard crib mattress in Canada measures 69.2 cm wide by 131.1 cm long, with a maximum thickness of 15 cm. These dimensions are regulated under SOR-2016-152 and are the same as the US standard (27.25" x 51.625" x 6" maximum).
Will any standard crib mattress fit any standard crib?
Yes, as long as both are labelled "standard" or "full-size." The dimensions are regulated, so a standard crib mattress from one brand will fit a standard crib from another. Always do the two-finger test after placing the mattress: if you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress edge and crib frame, the fit may be too loose.
Are crib mattress sizes the same in Canada and the US?
Yes. Canada's Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations are aligned with US Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. A standard crib mattress sold in either country will fit a standard crib from either country. The minimum dimensions (27.25" x 51.625") are identical.
When should my child move from a crib mattress to a twin?
Most children transition between ages two and four. Signs it is time include climbing over the crib rail, outgrowing the toddler bed length, or the child expressing readiness. A twin mattress (96.5 cm x 190.5 cm) is the most common next step. Visit our Brantford showroom to find the right support for your growing child.
