A crib mattress is sized AND firm for one reason: safety
Crib mattress dimensions exist to close gaps, and crib mattress firmness exists to prevent suffocation. The Canadian Paediatric Society's safe-sleep guidance is blunt on this point: babies under one year should sleep on their back on a firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet as the only bedding. A surface that is too soft lets a depression form around an infant's face, which raises the risk of rebreathing exhaled air. So when you read "crib mattress," read "firm and correctly sized," not "comfortable like an adult mattress." This is also why a soft adult-style memory foam mattress is not appropriate for an infant crib, even if it fits the frame.

Why the Exact Size Matters
The 3 cm (30 mm) maximum gap is not arbitrary. Health Canada's regulation states that when a mattress is pushed firmly against any side of the crib, it must not leave a gap of more than 30 mm against any other side. Infants can become trapped between a mattress and crib wall in gaps that seem impossibly narrow to adults. The standard size exists specifically to prevent this entrapment.
Good news: because the dimensions are regulated, any mattress labelled "standard crib size" or "full-size crib mattress" sold through a Canadian retailer will fit any standard crib. You do not need to match brands.
One thing that genuinely varies within the standard is thickness. Six inches is the legal maximum, but many crib mattresses are 5 inches, and that is fine. What matters more than thickness is that the surface is firm. A thicker mattress is not a softer or "better" mattress for a baby, and choosing one purely for plushness works against safe-sleep guidance.
Mini Crib Mattress
Mini crib mattresses measure approximately 61 cm x 96.5 cm (24" x 38"). These are smaller than standard crib mattresses and are designed for compact nurseries, apartments, or as secondary sleep spaces (such as grandparents' homes).
Important: mini crib mattresses and standard crib mattresses are not interchangeable. A standard mattress will not fit a mini crib, and a mini mattress used in a standard crib will leave dangerous gaps on all sides.

Portable Crib and Pack 'n Play
Portable cribs and Pack 'n Plays come with their own mattress pads, and this is the only mattress you should use with them. These pads are intentionally thin (about 2.5 cm / 1 inch) for safety reasons. A thicker mattress can create suffocation risk in a portable enclosure.
Do not add extra padding, toppers, or aftermarket mattresses to a portable crib. The product is safety-tested with its included pad only.
Toddler Mattress
Most toddler beds use the same mattress dimensions as standard cribs: 69.2 cm x 131.1 cm. If your crib converts to a toddler bed, you can continue using the same mattress.
The difference is firmness. Some dual-sided crib mattresses have a softer toddler side. Once your child is over 12 months, you can flip the mattress to the toddler side for slightly more comfort. The infant side should always face up for babies under one year.

Which Crib Size Do You Actually Need?
