The Toronto International Boat Show runs every January at the Enercare Centre, drawing tens of thousands of Ontario boaters to see new models, talk to dealers, and plan the coming season. By the time March and April arrive, those plans start turning into purchases and bookings, and one of the items consistently on the spring prep list is the berth mattress.

It's a surprisingly underserved need. Boat dealers handle the boat, not the bedding. Mattress retailers typically handle standard sizes, not the tapered and angular shapes that boat berths require. The result is that many Ontario boaters end up with an ill-fitting mattress that doesn't quite fill the berth, or a standard size crammed into a space that fights it.

Toronto International Boat Show 2026 and Spring Prep Season

The Toronto International Boat Show, held January 17 to 25, 2026 at the Enercare Centre, is the largest boat show in Canada by attendance and one of the largest in North America. It features hundreds of new boats across all categories, from small runabouts and personal watercraft to luxury sailing yachts and full-displacement motor cruisers.

For buyers who attended the show and committed to a new vessel, or for existing boaters preparing their boat for the 2026 season on Lake Ontario, Georgian Bay, the Trent-Severn, or other Ontario waters, spring is the time to address the sleep below decks. A boat's berth mattress is typically the most overlooked upgrade, but it's one of the most directly affecting comfort on extended cruises or overnight passages.

March through May is the window to get custom work ordered and delivered before launch season, particularly if you need a custom-cut shape that requires templating time and fabrication. Planning now means your berth is ready when the boat is.

Boat Berth Types and Their Mattress Challenges

Every berth type presents its own geometric and practical challenge for mattress selection.

V-Berths (Forward Cabin)

The V-berth is the most common sleeping space on boats under 40 feet and the most uniquely shaped. Named for the V-shape of the bow, V-berths taper at the forward end and are wider at the foot. They are almost never a standard rectangle, and a standard mattress jammed into a V-berth leaves gaps at the tapered sides that are uncomfortable to sleep against and create moisture traps.

A correctly fitted V-berth mattress is cut to match the exact taper of the berth, including any compound angles caused by the hull curve. Many V-berths also have a split-hinge design, where the mattress is cut into two sections (port and starboard) that fold up separately to allow access to the storage compartments below the berth sole. This split-hinge configuration needs to be built into the mattress design at the outset.

For couples sharing a V-berth with different firmness preferences, a split-firmness V-berth mattress with a softer port half and a firmer starboard half is achievable in custom construction. The two halves are covered as one piece but have different core materials.

Quarter Berths

Quarter berths are located aft of the main saloon, often under the cockpit on sailing vessels, and are characterised by their low clearance headroom and sometimes tapered width. They are often accessed from a side and may require the sleeper to slide in, which means the berth entrance clearance is a real constraint.

Quarter berths are typically long but narrow, ranging from 24 to 36 inches wide and 72 to 84 inches long. Height restrictions are the main challenge: if the deck above is 7 inches from the berth sole at the narrowest point, the mattress cannot exceed 7 inches. A standard residential mattress at 10 to 15 inches will not fit. Marine mattresses are typically specified at 4 to 7 inches maximum height for berths with low overhead.

Pilot Berths

Pilot berths are upper berths found in some sailing yacht designs, typically outboard of the main saloon settees and accessible by climbing. They are narrow (often 24 to 28 inches wide), have fixed or very low overhead clearance, and are primarily used in passage-making when the off-watch crew needs to sleep while the boat is under way.

Pilot berth mattresses need to be thin (4 to 5 inches maximum) and firm, as the berth is often at an angle when sailing. Memory foam is particularly poorly suited to pilot berths because it is temperature-sensitive and does not perform well when compressed against the side of a berth in a heeled sailing vessel. High-density polyurethane foam or Talalay latex is more appropriate.

Saloon Settee Berths

The main saloon settees on many cruising boats convert to berths with the addition of a filler cushion between the settee and the dinette table area. The resulting berth is typically 70 to 75 inches long and 22 to 30 inches wide per side. These berths are used most frequently for short overnight anchorages rather than extended passage-making.

Settee cushions that double as berth mattresses need to be firm enough to function as seating during the day and comfortable enough for sleeping at night. Medium-firm high-density foam (IFD of 35 to 45) strikes this balance reasonably well. Talalay latex is the premium material for settee-to-berth conversions because it maintains consistent feel regardless of whether it is compressed vertically (seating) or horizontally (sleeping).

Aft Cabin Berths (Larger Vessels)

Boats over 40 feet often have a dedicated aft cabin with an island bed or double berth that approaches residential mattress proportions. On larger motoryachts and sailing yachts, the aft cabin primary berth may be full queen or even king size, particularly in vessels designed for extended liveaboard or charter use.

Sabre Yachts and Grand Banks motoryachts, two premium boat brands with strong followings in Ontario's cruising community, build aft cabins with generous berth proportions designed for long-term comfort. Grand Banks in particular has a reputation for sleeping quarters that rival hotel room quality. For these vessels, a near-residential mattress in Talalay latex or premium foam with organic cotton or Joma Wool ticking is appropriate, with marine-specific materials used for the underlay and moisture management rather than the mattress core itself.

Materials That Work on Water

Talalay Latex: The Marine Standard

100 percent natural Talalay latex is the preferred core material for marine mattresses in the premium category. It has several properties that make it particularly suited to the boat environment:

• Open-cell structure: Allows moisture vapour transmission through the material rather than trapping it
• Antimicrobial properties: Natural latex does not support mold, mildew, or dust mite colonisation in the way that synthetic foams do
• Temperature stability: Unlike memory foam, Talalay latex does not become hard in cold night temperatures or overly soft in summer heat. It maintains consistent feel across the temperature range encountered in Ontario boating seasons
• Durability: High-quality Talalay latex maintains its performance properties for 15 to 20 years, significantly longer than conventional foam
• Custom cuttability: Talalay latex can be cut to custom shapes for V-berths and other non-rectangular berth geometries without compromising the cell structure at the cut edge

High-Density Polyurethane Foam

For budget-conscious applications, high-density polyurethane foam (minimum 1.8 lb/cubic foot density for marine use) is a functional marine mattress material. It is more affordable than latex and can be custom cut. It should be specified at medium-firm or firm (IFD 30 to 45) for marine use, as the humidity environment accelerates the softening of lower-density foam.

Ticking: Organic Cotton and Joma Wool

The outer cover of a marine mattress matters more than it does in residential use because the ticking is the primary defence against moisture penetrating the core. New Zealand Joma Wool ticking is a premium option that combines natural moisture management with durability. Organic cotton ticking in a tight weave is an effective standard option. Both materials are breathable, which is important in the marine environment.

Synthetic ticking with a waterproof membrane is sometimes used in commercial marine mattresses, but it traps moisture inside the mattress rather than allowing it to evaporate, which accelerates core deterioration over time.

Hypervent Underlay

Hypervent is a 15mm thick underlay material with a three-dimensional open structure. Placed between the berth sole and the mattress, it creates an air circulation layer that prevents condensation buildup at the mattress-to-hull interface. It is washable, durable, and has become the standard marine mattress accessory for boats stored in humid environments or used year-round.

How to Measure and Template Your Berth

For standard rectangular berths, measuring length and width at multiple points (every 12 inches along the length) is sufficient to identify any taper or irregularity. For V-berths and other complex shapes, a place-and-trace template is necessary.

The Place-and-Trace Method

The place-and-trace method involves placing a large sheet of heavy kraft paper or fabric directly on the berth sole and tracing the exact perimeter of the berth, including any cutouts for cleats, through-hulls, or structural elements. The resulting template captures the exact shape of the berth and allows the mattress to be cut to a precise fit.

Steps for an accurate V-berth template:

1. Remove the existing mattress or cushions from the berth
2. Lay kraft paper on the berth sole, overlapping pieces if necessary and taping them together
3. Trace the perimeter of the berth with a marker, following the exact edge of the berth sole to the hull or fiddle edge
4. Note the height clearance at multiple points (forward, mid-berth, and at the foot) as this determines maximum mattress height
5. Note whether the berth has a split-hinge configuration and where the split line should fall
6. Mark which end is forward and which is port versus starboard
7. Roll or fold the template carefully and bring it in or ship it

Height, Firmness, and Sleeping Position on a Boat

Height: Marine mattress height is constrained by overhead clearance in the berth. As a general rule:

• Low-profile berths (quarter berths, pilot berths, settee berths): 4 to 6 inches maximum
• Standard forward cabins and V-berths: 5 to 8 inches
• Aft cabin island beds on larger vessels: 7 to 12 inches, approaching residential height

The commonly cited "7 inch finished height" for V-berths and forward cabin berths is a reasonable starting point, but always verify your actual clearance before specifying.

Firmness: A slightly firmer mattress performs better in the marine environment than in residential use. The vessel's movement while at anchor creates a gently rocking environment that a softer mattress absorbs by compressing unevenly. A medium-firm to firm mattress distributes body weight more evenly under marine motion conditions and maintains its profile better against hull tilt and anchor swing.

For V-berth mattresses with a split-firmness configuration, the typical request is one side softer for lighter sleepers and one side firmer for heavier sleepers, matching the same approach used in residential split-firmness designs.

Premium Canadian Boats and Their Bedding Needs

Sabre Yachts

Sabre Yachts, built in Maine by skilled artisans, are a premium sailing yacht brand with a strong following among Ontario Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay cruisers. Sabre's interiors are finished to a high standard with teak joinery and carefully proportioned berths. The V-berths and aft cabins in Sabre 36 to 54 models are typically well-shaped for a custom mattress fit, and the quality of the boat justifies the investment in premium Talalay latex and organic cotton ticking.

Grand Banks Motoryachts

Grand Banks motoryachts are known for their heavy displacement, traditional lines, and exceptional build quality. The aft staterooms in Grand Banks 36 through 60 models are among the most comfortable sleeping accommodations available on a production motoryacht. Grand Banks aft cabin berths are often queen or close to queen-size, and the higher-end models have been spec'd from the factory with quality mattresses that can be upgraded to premium Talalay latex with Joma Wool ticking for a significant improvement in comfort.

RV, Trailer, and Murphy Bed Sizing: Adjacent Custom Needs

RV mattresses: Recreational vehicles use non-standard mattress sizes that echo the marine sizing challenge. Common RV mattress sizes include:

RV Short Queen at 60" x 74" is the most common non-standard RV size. Standard residential queens (60" x 80") are 6 inches too long for most RV bedroom slide configurations. If you're replacing an RV mattress, measure the bed area carefully and confirm whether you need the short queen cut.

Murphy beds and wall beds: Murphy bed frames have specific weight and height requirements for the mattress because the mattress must fold vertically into the cabinet.
