Quick Answer: Twin vs. Twin XL Protector?
They are not the same size.
Twin: 39" x 75" (Standard kids bed).
Twin XL: 39" x 80" (University dorm beds and Split King adjustable beds).
If you try to put a standard Twin protector on a Twin XL mattress, it will snap off the corners or tear. Always check the label for the "XL" or "Extra Long" designation before buying for a student or an adjustable base.

It's late August in Brantford. Parents are scrambling to get their kids ready for Laurier or McMaster. They buy a standard Twin sheet set, only to get a frantic call on move-in day: "It doesn't fit!"
The Twin XL is a unique size found in two very different places: university dorms and luxury master bedrooms (Split Kings). At Mattress Miracle, we stock this "hard-to-find" size year-round.
The Dorm Room Essential
University mattresses are... heavily used. You do not want to sleep directly on one.
- Hygiene: A full encasement (zippered) protector blocks bed bugs, dust mites, and whatever the previous student left behind.
- Waterproofing: Spilled coffee, late-night snacks, or sweat. A waterproof layer protects the mattress (and your security deposit).
- Comfort: Dorm mattresses are notoriously plastic and hard. A quilted protector adds a tiny bit of softness.
The Split King Necessity
If you have a Split King Adjustable Bed, you actually have two Twin XL mattresses side-by-side. You cannot use a King protector (it would bridge the gap and stop the bases from moving independently).
You need two Twin XL protectors. This allows one side to raise while the other stays flat without pulling the bedding.
Waterproof vs. Water Resistant
Water Resistant: Repels a small splash, but if you sit on it, the liquid soaks through. Usually just treated cotton.
Waterproof: Has a physical barrier (TPU or Vinyl). Blocks liquid completely.
Recommendation: Always go Waterproof for dorms. Look for breathable polyurethane backing so it doesn't feel like sleeping on a chip bag.
Care Instructions
Twin XL protectors take a beating.
- Wash: Warm water with sheets.
- Dry: Tumble dry LOW. High heat melts the waterproof backing.
- Frequency: Wash monthly (or immediately after a spill).

Where can I buy Twin XL bedding in Brantford?
We stock Twin XL sheets, protectors, and toppers at Mattress Miracle (441 1/2 West Street). Department stores usually only carry them during "Back to School" season.
Do I need an encasement for a dorm?
We highly recommend it for bug protection. Put a fitted protector over the encasement for easy weekly washing.
Will a Twin fitted sheet fit a Twin XL?
No. It is 5 inches too short. It will pop off the corners constantly.
Can I use two Twin XL protectors on a King bed?
Yes, but you will feel the seam in the middle. It's better to buy a King protector unless you have an adjustable base.
