Canada does not produce significant amounts of flax for linen. We grow flax in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, but primarily for flaxseed (linseed), not for fibre. The fibre varieties of flax require specific growing conditions and processing infrastructure that do not exist at scale in Canada. When you buy "linen" in Canada, the flax was almost certainly grown in Europe.
How Linen Is Made: From Flax to Fabric
The process of turning a flax plant into linen fabric is more complex and time-intensive than making cotton fabric. This is one reason linen costs more.
1. Growing (approximately 100 days)
Flax is planted in spring and harvested about 100 days later, when the stems turn yellow and the seeds begin to brown. The plants are pulled from the ground rather than cut, because cutting would damage the long fibres that run the entire length of the stem. This is still done by machine in modern farming, but the pulling mechanism is gentler than a cutting combine.
2. Retting (1-3 weeks)
After harvest, the flax stems must be "retted," which means partially decomposing the outer woody layer to release the inner fibres. This is typically done by spreading the harvested stems on a field and letting dew and rain break down the outer bark (called dew retting), or by soaking them in water (water retting). Dew retting is slower but produces a more consistent result. Most premium European linen uses dew retting.
3. Scutching and hackling
The retted stems are passed through machines that break away the woody outer material (scutching) and then combed to separate the long, fine fibres from shorter ones (hackling). The long fibres (called "line" fibres) become the best linen yarn. The shorter fibres (called "tow") are used for lower-grade textiles or blended products.
4. Spinning
The long fibres are spun into yarn. Linen yarn can be spun dry (producing a rougher, more textured yarn) or wet (producing a smoother, finer yarn). Wet spinning is used for high-quality sheets and clothing. Dry spinning is used for more casual, textured fabrics.
5. Weaving

This is the real deal, and it represents a genuine quality standard backed by Belgium's centuries-long tradition of linen production.
"Belgian flax linen" or "European flax linen" is a different claim. It means the flax was grown in Europe (the flax belt region), but the weaving may have been done anywhere in the world, including India or China. The quality of the flax fibre is similar, but the weaving expertise and quality control may differ significantly.
"Belgian-style linen" means nothing. It is a marketing term that carries no certification or guarantee about fibre origin or weaving location.
How to Verify Belgian Linen
Look for the Belgian Linen trademark logo on the product label or packaging. This is a specific certification mark that requires audited compliance with the Belgian Flax and Linen Federation's standards. If the product simply says "Belgian linen" in text without the certification mark, it may or may not meet the standard. Is Belgian linen actually better? In most cases, yes. Belgium has been producing linen since the Middle Ages, and the country's mills maintain some of the most advanced weaving technology and quality control processes in the world. A study by the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp (CELC) found that certified Belgian Linen fabrics showed 15-20% higher breaking strength and more consistent thread density than equivalent-weight linen from non-European mills. What pure linen does well
Gets softer over time. New linen can feel stiff due to natural pectin and wax in the fibres. Each wash cycle breaks down these compounds, and by the tenth wash, linen reaches a softness that cotton cannot match. Vintage linen that has been washed hundreds of times can feel as soft as silk. This is one of linen's most remarkable properties and one of the strongest arguments for the investment.
Resists bacteria and odour. Flax fibres retain some antibacterial properties even after processing.
