- Run the dryer on high for a full 30-minute cycle, not just until "dry"
- Do not overload. Items need space to tumble freely so heat reaches everywhere
- Pillows, stuffed animals, shoes, and small bags all go in the dryer
- Delicate fabrics? The heat may damage them, but bed bugs will too. Your call
- Transport infested items to the dryer in sealed plastic bags to prevent spreading

And alcohol has absolutely zero residual effect. Once it evaporates (within minutes), any bug that walks across the treated surface is completely unaffected.
The bigger concern is safety. Rubbing alcohol is highly flammable. There have been documented house fires in Canada and the United States caused by people spraying rubbing alcohol on mattresses and bed frames to kill bed bugs. Boiling Water: Instant but Impractical
Pouring boiling water (100°C) on a bed bug kills it instantly. There is no debate about that. The problem is obvious: you cannot pour boiling water on your mattress, your box spring, your headboard, or your carpet.
Boiling water works for one very specific scenario: laundering. Washing infested items in water above 60°C kills all bed bug life stages. If your washing machine has a sanitize cycle or a hot water setting that reaches 60°C or higher, use it before the dryer cycle for a double kill.
Hair Dryer: Slow Heat, Partial Results
A household hair dryer on its highest setting produces air around 60-70°C at the nozzle. Held close to a surface for 15-30 minutes, it can theoretically reach lethal temperatures. In practice, the heat dissipates too quickly to be reliable.
The main issue is coverage. You would need to hold the hair dryer 3-5 centimetres from every square centimetre of a mattress for 15-30 minutes each. For a queen-size mattress, that could take 8+ hours of continuous operation, and most consumer hair dryers will overheat and shut off long before that.
Verdict: a hair dryer might kill one visible bug you are pointing it at, but it is not a treatment strategy.
White Vinegar: Minutes, Maybe
White vinegar (5% acetic acid) can kill bed bugs on direct contact, but it takes longer than alcohol, roughly 1-5 minutes depending on exposure. The acetic acid damages their nervous system on contact, though the mechanism is less studied than thermal or desiccant methods.
Vinegar cannot kill eggs. It has no residual effect. And the smell, while not dangerous, is strong enough to make sleeping in the treated room unpleasant for hours. It is a reasonable panic-moment spray if you have nothing else, but calling it a "remedy" is generous.
Tea Tree Oil: Hours, With Caveats
