Six Signs Your Box Spring Needs Replacing

A box spring does not fail dramatically. It degrades slowly, and most people do not realize their box spring is the problem until they buy a new mattress and it sags within a year.

1. Creaking, squeaking, or popping sounds. When you sit on the bed or roll over and hear metal-on-metal noises, the internal coil system or frame joints are worn. A box spring should be silent. Noise means movement in places that should be rigid.

2. Visible sagging in the centre. Stand at the foot of your bed and look across the surface of the box spring (remove the mattress first). If you see a dip in the centre, the internal springs or slats have lost their support. Even a 1-inch sag in the box spring translates directly to a sag in your mattress.

3. The mattress slides or shifts. A failing box spring may develop an uneven surface that causes the mattress to creep to one side. If you find yourself straightening the mattress regularly, the box spring surface may be warped or angled.

4. You feel the coils or slats through the mattress. If you can feel hard spots or ridges through your mattress when lying down, the box spring's padding layer has compressed and the internal structure is pressing upward. This gets worse over time and can create pressure points that disrupt sleep.

5. Broken or cracked wood. Some box springs use wooden slats rather than coils. Check underneath by lifting the dust cover fabric. If any slats are cracked, split, or bowed, the support is compromised. A broken slat creates an unsupported gap that the mattress sinks into.

6. It is older than your mattress. If you replaced your mattress but kept the old box spring, you may be undermining the new mattress. The old box spring's worn spots will not match the new mattress's support needs, and the uneven surface can cause premature wear patterns.

Age Limits: How Long They Actually Last

Box springs are built to last 8-10 years with normal use. Some hold up longer, some fail sooner. The lifespan depends on construction quality, the weight they support, and whether the mattress on top was regularly rotated.

The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) recommends evaluating your box spring whenever you replace your mattress. Their guidelines note that a box spring supporting a heavier mattress (queen or king size with high coil counts) works harder than one supporting a lighter mattress, and may wear out faster.

Weight load also matters. A box spring supporting two adults averaging 180 pounds each bears 360 pounds of body weight plus the mattress weight (typically 60-120 pounds for a queen). That is 420-480 pounds of sustained load, 8 hours a night, 365 nights a year. After a decade, that cumulative stress adds up to over 17,000 hours of compression. It is not surprising that internal components fatigue.

How Your Box Spring Affects Mattress Warranty

This is the part that catches most people off guard. Your mattress warranty likely has specific requirements about what foundation you use.

Read your warranty document carefully. Most Canadian mattress warranties include language along these lines: "This warranty does not cover damage caused by improper support, including use of a damaged, worn, or incompatible foundation."

In practice, this means:

• If your mattress sags because the box spring failed, the manufacturer can deny your warranty claim
• If you use a platform bed with slats that are too far apart, the warranty may be void
• If you place the mattress on the floor, some warranties consider this "improper support"

Restonic's warranty, for example, requires the mattress to be placed on a "matching Restonic foundation or a rigid, non-spring foundation." Using a 12-year-old box spring from a different brand could technically void the warranty. Modern mattresses, especially hybrids and foam models, are built to work on any flat, solid surface. Many mattress manufacturers now recommend a foundation, platform bed, or slatted frame rather than a traditional coil box spring.

Here is a decision framework:

You need a box spring if:

• Your bed frame is designed for a box spring (headboard/footboard frame with centre support rail)
• Your mattress warranty specifically requires one
• You need the height a box spring provides (typically 7-9 inches)
• You have an older innerspring mattress that was designed to flex with a coil foundation

You do not need a box spring if:

• You have a platform bed with a solid top or closely spaced slats
• You use an adjustable bed base
• Your mattress is all-foam or a modern hybrid designed for rigid support
• You want a lower bed profile

Getting Rid of the Old One

Box spring disposal is an overlooked part of the replacement process. In Brantford and most Ontario municipalities, box springs are classified as bulky waste and cannot go in regular curbside pickup.

Your options:
