- Coil gauge zoning (innerspring and hybrid): Individual coil springs are manufactured with different wire gauges in different zones. A thicker (higher gauge number in U.S. convention, lower mm diameter) wire creates a softer coil with less resistance. A thinner (lower gauge number, larger mm diameter) wire creates a firmer, more resistant coil. By varying coil gauge across zones, manufacturers create a firm lumbar zone and softer shoulder zones within the same coil unit.
- Coil height zoning: Taller coils in shoulder zones allow greater compression before full coil engagement, creating a softer feel. Shorter coils in lumbar zones reach full engagement sooner, providing firmer resistance. This approach is used in some hybrid mattresses where the coil is the primary comfort layer.
- Foam cutout zoning: In all-foam and some hybrid comfort layers, channels, perforations, or cutouts are made in specific zones to reduce firmness locally.
