The bed frame market has more categories than most buyers realise. Here is what each type actually does, without the jargon.
Traditional Metal Rail Frame
The simplest and cheapest option. Metal side rails connect to a headboard and footboard (sold separately or together), with centre support legs. This frame does NOT support a mattress on its own. You need a box spring or foundation on top of the rails.
These are what most hotels use. They are functional, hidden entirely by bedding, and cost $150-$280 in Ontario. Our budget metal frame at $280 and foldable metal frame at $150 fall into this category.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers who already own a box spring and want the cheapest functional frame.
Platform Bed
A complete support system with built-in slats or a solid panel. No box spring needed. We covered platform beds in detail in our companion guide, but the short version: platforms are the most popular frame type in Ontario right now and work with every modern mattress type.
Prices range from $170 for a basic metal platform to $4,197 for solid Canadian hardwood. The sweet spot for most buyers is $400-$700 for a quality upholstered platform with an integrated headboard.
Upholstered Bed Frame
Wood or metal frame wrapped in fabric (linen, polyester, velvet, leather, or faux leather) with a padded headboard. These dominate the Ontario market right now because they provide a finished bedroom look without needing separate headboard and frame purchases.
Upholstered frames come in two sub-categories: those with built-in slats (functioning as platform beds) and those requiring a box spring or foundation. Check before buying.

Box Spring or Not: The Decision Chart
This is the single most important question when buying a bed frame, and getting it wrong can void your mattress warranty.

Why Frame Material Matters More Than Style
Style gets all the attention. Material determines how long your bed frame actually lasts.
Metal (Steel or Iron)
Steel frames are the workhorses of the bed frame market. They are strong, relatively light, affordable, and resist warping. A quality steel frame will last 10-15 years without structural issues.
The main drawbacks are noise (metal joints can develop squeaks, especially on hardwood floors) and cold contact (metal feels cold in Ontario winters, which matters if any part of the frame is exposed). A 2022 review in Materials and Design noted that welded steel joints outperform bolted joints for long-term noise resistance, so look for frames with welded construction at stress points (Chen & Liu, 2022).
Engineered Wood (MDF, Particle Board, Plywood)
Most bed frames sold at chain retailers in Ontario (The Brick, Leon's, Wayfair) are made from MDF or particle board with a wood-grain laminate or veneer. These frames look like wood in photos and even in showrooms, but they are not solid wood.
MDF is stable and consistent, which means flat surfaces stay flat. But it is heavy, does not hold screws well when reassembled (a concern if you move frequently), and cannot be refinished or repaired when damaged. The veneer or laminate surface chips, peels, and shows white composite underneath. Expected lifespan: 5-10 years.
Solid Hardwood (Maple, Oak, Birch, Pine)
Solid wood frames are the most durable option available. A well-constructed hardwood bed frame can last 25-50 years, and many become family heirlooms passed between generations. They can be sanded, refinished, and repaired indefinitely.
The trade-offs are weight (solid wood frames are heavy), cost (2-4x the price of engineered wood), and availability (increasingly rare at mainstream Ontario retailers). A lifecycle analysis in the Journal of Industrial Ecology found that solid hardwood furniture's total cost of ownership was lower than engineered wood over a 20-year period despite higher upfront costs, because it did not need replacement (Petersen & Solberg, 2021).

Size Compatibility Pitfalls
This seems straightforward but it trips people up more often than you would expect.
Canadian mattress sizes are standardised, but bed frame interior dimensions are not. A "queen" frame from one manufacturer might have interior dimensions of 60" x 80" (correct) while another might be 60.5" x 80.5" (leaves a gap) or 59.5" x 79.5" (tight fit).
Before buying a bed frame, verify two things:
- Interior dimensions match your mattress. Canadian standard queen is 60" x 80". King is 76" x 80". Double/Full is 54" x 75". Twin is 38" x 75". Measure the frame interior, not the exterior.
- Weight capacity meets your needs. The total weight includes the mattress (50-150 lbs depending on type), your body weight, and your partner's weight.
