Quick Answer: A twin box spring is the base that lifts a twin mattress off the frame rails, about 38 by 75 inches per the Better Sleep Council. You need one for a coil or two-sided mattress on a rail frame; skip it on a slatted platform, bunk or adjustable base. Ours is $129.99 in three heights.

A twin mattress and box spring set is a twin mattress, 38 by 75 inches on the Better Sleep Council's size chart, paired with a base built to the same footprint. The box spring is the bottom half of the bed. It's a wood frame with springs or a rigid grid inside, wrapped in fabric, and it rests on the frame rails and carries the mattress. At Mattress Miracle in Brantford you can buy the two together or one at a time. Our twin box springs and foundations start at $129.99, and that one price covers all three heights we stock.
A box spring and a foundation do the same two jobs: they raise the mattress and hold it flat. The words overlap. Collins English Dictionary defines a box spring as a coiled spring in a boxlike frame, used as a base for mattresses. The US mattress flammability rule (16 CFR 1632.8) calls any surface a mattress rests on for support a foundation, box springs included. In a store, "foundation" usually means a rigid base with no springs. Our standard box spring is a solid wood frame with heavy-duty steel supports. Its listing pairs it with innerspring and hybrid mattresses and says foam and latex do better on a slatted platform. Check the mattress warranty for the base it names before you buy the bottom half. Pick the mattress first from our twin mattress collection, then match the base to it.
Brad Grose, founder of Mattress Miracle, 40+ years in the mattress business: "Every customer's situation is different. We have been helping Brantford families find the right mattress since 1997, and we are always happy to answer questions in person at our showroom on West Street."

Do You Need a Box Spring With a Twin Mattress?
A twin mattress needs a box spring when the frame under it has nothing to carry the mattress except side rails and a centre bar. That describes a basic metal bed frame with a centre bar. Put a mattress straight onto those rails and it sags between them. The box spring bridges the gap and gives the mattress one flat surface to rest on.
When a twin box spring is the right base
- The frame is a rail frame (metal or a wooden headboard-and-footboard set) with no slats of its own.
- The mattress is a coil or two-sided mattress and its warranty names a box spring or matching foundation.
- You want the bed at a normal sitting height without buying a tall frame.
What people use instead of a twin box spring
A twin box spring is optional on three kinds of base. Platform bed frames have a slat deck built in, so the mattress goes straight on top. Adjustable bed frames have their own motorized deck and never take a box spring. A bunkie board is a thin flat panel that turns a slatted frame with wide gaps into a solid deck. Our bunkie board versus box spring comparison covers when that panel is enough. If you are still undecided about needing one at all, the longer walk-through on whether a twin needs a box spring goes base by base.
Twin Box Spring Size: 38 by 75 Inches, Twin XL at 80
A twin box spring matches the mattress it carries. The Better Sleep Council lists a twin at 38 by 75 inches and a twin XL at 38 by 80 inches. Some makers build their twins an inch wider; our own standard twin box spring is listed at 39 by 75 inches. Measure the inside of your frame rails before you order. If the numbers on your old bed don't match, our twin mattress size guide settles the 38 versus 39 inch question.
| Size | Width | Length | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 in | 75 in | Better Sleep Council |
| Twin XL | 38 in | 80 in | Better Sleep Council |
A twin and a twin XL box spring are not interchangeable. Put a 75-inch twin box spring under an 80-inch twin XL mattress and five inches of mattress hang over the end with nothing beneath them. The twin XL box spring guide covers the longer size.
Twin Box Spring Height: 2, 5 and 7 1/2 Inch Options
Twin box spring height decides how tall the finished bed sits. The standard box spring at Mattress Miracle comes in three heights at the same $129.99 twin price: 7 1/2 inches (standard), 5 inches (low profile) and 2 inches (ultra-low). Sprout's hardwood bases, built for its natural mattresses, come at 4, 7 and 8 inches.
The arithmetic is simple. Add the frame height, the box spring height and the mattress thickness. The rows below use a frame that holds the box spring 7 inches off the floor as an example; measure your own before you choose. Our low profile twin box spring guide goes deeper on the shorter bases.
| Mattress thickness | Box spring height | Frame (example) | Top of mattress from floor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 in | 7 1/2 in | 7 in | 20 1/2 in |
| 10 in | 7 1/2 in | 7 in | 24 1/2 in |
| 10 in | 5 in | 7 in | 22 in |
| 12 in | 5 in | 7 in | 24 in |
| 12 in | 2 in | 7 in | 21 in |
The test that matters: sit on the edge of the bed and your feet should rest flat on the floor. A thin mattress pairs with the 7 1/2 inch box spring; a 12-inch mattress usually wants the 5-inch low profile.
Which Twin Box Spring Suits Your Mattress Type
The right twin box spring depends on what the mattress is made of. Coil and hybrid mattresses are the ones a box spring suits. Foam needs a flat, rigid surface with no sag between supports. Two-sided mattresses, such as the Sprout Durus from our Sprout natural mattress line, need a base that is even across the whole surface, because both sides get slept on over the years.
| Twin mattress type | Base that suits it | Twin examples at Mattress Miracle |
|---|---|---|
| Two-sided (flippable) coil | Firm, even box spring or slat box | Sleep In Whitney, $875 twin |
| Pocket coil or hybrid | The box spring or foundation the maker's warranty names | C.J. Mulholland Series 5000, $305 twin |
| All-foam | Rigid base with a solid or closely slatted top | C.J. Mulholland Series 6000, $362 twin |
| Natural latex, wool and cotton | The maker's own base | Sprout Durus single on the Sprout slat box |
For foam specifically, our explainer on what a foam mattress needs underneath walks through which bases flex too much. If you're comparing hybrid mattresses, read the warranty section of the listing first; the base it names is the one to buy. The box spring versus foundation breakdown explains the two terms when a warranty uses one and the store tag says the other.
Twin Mattress and Box Spring Set Prices in Brantford
A twin mattress and box spring set at Mattress Miracle costs the mattress price plus $129.99 for the standard box spring. We don't bundle a fixed set price, so you pick the mattress for the person sleeping on it and add the base that fits it. Here are real twin pairings from every twin mattress we stock, priced from the store on November 3, 2026.
| Twin set | Mattress | Box spring | Set total | Delivery in our checkout test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C.J. Mulholland Series 5000 + standard box spring | $305 | $129.99 | $434.99 | $80 |
| C.J. Mulholland Series 7000 + standard box spring | $427 | $129.99 | $556.99 | Free |
| Sleep In Paradise + standard box spring | $630 | $129.99 | $759.99 | Free |
| Sprout Durus (single) + Sprout slat box (single) | $3,179.99 | $619.99 | $3,799.98 | Free |
The delivery column comes from our own checkout, run to a Brantford address on November 3, 2026. A twin box spring ordered on its own carried $80 delivery, and so did the $434.99 Series 5000 set. The three sets over $500 in the table came up free. That matches the rule Mattress Miracle publishes: furniture orders under $500, such as a box spring on its own, pay $80 in Ontario. Our standard box spring checks out for Ontario addresses only. If you live farther afield, here's how ordering from elsewhere in Ontario works.
The gap between the cheapest and dearest sets is mostly the mattress. The box spring stays $129.99 from the $434.99 set to the $759.99 one. For the same math in other sizes, see our guide to affordable mattress and box spring sets in every size.
Twin Box Spring and Bed Frame Fit
A twin box spring fits any twin frame built with side rails, and it should never go on a frame that already has a deck. Here's how the common frames sort out.
Metal twin frames with a centre bar
Basic metal bed frames are the frame a twin box spring was made for. The box spring rests on the rails and centre bar, and the mattress sits on the box spring. If you're buying all three pieces at once, our guide to buying the frame, box spring and mattress together covers what to measure first.
Platform frames and storage beds
A platform frame already has slats, so adding a box spring stacks a second base on the first and leaves a twin bed awkwardly tall. Pick one or the other.
Panel beds with a headboard and footboard
Decorative twin beds usually hang their side rails between the headboard and footboard. Measure the inside length and width before you buy, since a half inch either way decides whether the box spring drops in or jams.
Bunk beds: no box spring
Twin bunk beds have their own deck of slats or plywood, and a box spring would eat the guardrail height that keeps a child in the top bunk. Health Canada says the top of the guardrails must sit at least 12.7 cm (5 inches) above the top of the mattress on all sides. It also says no child under 6 should be on the top bunk at any time. Check the bed's label for the suggested mattress size and thickness, and follow it before you pick the mattress.
A Twin Set for a Kid's Room or a Guest Room
Most twin sets go to one of two rooms. For a child's first big bed, the advisors at Mattress Miracle reach for the C.J. Mulholland Series 5000 and Series 6000 and our premium foam mattresses. Under the coil Series 5000, a 5-inch low profile box spring keeps a smaller child's climb short; the foam models sit better on a slatted platform. The single versus twin explainer for parents sorts out the naming if a hand-me-down frame says "single".
Dorothy Balicki, Mattress Miracle: "For kids under 8, we almost always recommend a low-profile base or a platform bed with guard rails. The lower height means shorter falls, and that matters when you have a little one who rolls around at night. Once they are older and sleeping more settled, standard height is fine."
A guest room twin gets used a few dozen nights a year, so it pays to spend on the mattress and keep the base simple. The Sleep In Paradise, a pocket-coil hybrid, is $630 in twin, and on the $129.99 box spring it came to $759.99 and delivered free in our test. The Cool Breeze is also $630, but its listing says it works best on a solid platform or slats no more than 3 inches apart. If a guest wants it softer, a thin mattress topper changes the feel without replacing anything.
One person per twin. A 1980 Human Factors study measured 239 truck and bus drivers in three sleep postures. It recommended a minimum berth width of 0.84 m, about 33 inches, to fit 90% of them. A 38-inch twin clears that for one adult; two people sharing it would get 19 inches each, which is why couples move up to double mattresses or bigger.
How Long a Twin Box Spring Lasts
A twin box spring takes less wear than the mattress on top of it, because nobody sleeps directly on it. Every mattress Mattress Miracle carries with a 10-year warranty is one we have watched last 10 years. Replace the box spring when you see these:
- Creaking or squeaking that stays after you tighten the frame bolts
- A dip, a broken slat or a soft corner you can feel when you press down
- The mattress shifting or tilting when you roll over
When the mattress is worn out and the box spring is the same age, replace them as a set; an old base can wear a new mattress unevenly. Our list of signs a box spring is done has the full checklist. On top, a waterproof mattress protector keeps spills out of the new set, and a box spring cover keeps dust off the base if you skip a bed skirt.
What research says about replacing an old mattress and box spring
A small 2009 study in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (Jacobson, Boolani and Smith) followed 59 healthy adults with minor sleep-related aches. Their own beds averaged 9.5 years old, and the researchers replaced them with new medium-firm mattresses on a semi-flex foundation for 28 days. Participants reported about 48% less back discomfort and more than 50% better sleep quality. The scales were self-rated and the sample was small, so read it as a sign that an old bed matters and nothing more.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy just a twin box spring?
Yes. Mattress Miracle sells its standard twin box spring on its own for $129.99, in 2, 5 or 7 1/2 inch heights. On its own it checks out with $80 delivery, to Ontario addresses only. In our November 3 checkout test, the Series 7000 twin plus this box spring ($556.99) delivered free to a Brantford address.
Is a twin bed for 1 or 2 people?
A twin is a one-person bed. At 38 inches wide it gives one adult comfortable room, while two people would each get about 19 inches. Couples are better off in a double or queen.
Why are box springs no longer used?
They still are, just less often. Foam mattresses usually go on a rigid flat base, and platform frames carry their own slats, so a lot of new beds skip the box spring. Rail frames and coil or two-sided mattresses still need one.
Are there mattresses with built-in box springs?
No standard mattress has a box spring inside it. The phrase usually means a mattress with its own coil support layer that sits directly on a slatted platform bed or adjustable base. The mattress still needs a flat, supportive surface under it.
What is the standard height of a box spring?
The standard box spring at Mattress Miracle is 7 1/2 inches tall, with 5-inch low profile and 2-inch ultra-low versions at the same price. Sprout's bases on our floor are 7 and 8 inches, with a 4-inch low profile.
Is a twin XL box spring the same as a twin box spring?
No. A twin XL box spring is 80 inches long and a twin is 75, per the Better Sleep Council. Match the box spring to the mattress, or five inches of a twin XL mattress will hang off the end of a twin base.
Can I use a twin box spring under a memory foam mattress?
Check what the mattress warranty asks for first. Our standard box spring is listed for innerspring and hybrid mattresses; foam is usually happier on a rigid base with a solid top or closely spaced slats. Our guide to bases for foam mattresses compares the options.
Do twin mattress and box spring sets come with a bed frame?
Usually not. A set is the mattress and its base; the frame is a separate purchase unless the listing says it is included. At Mattress Miracle the mattress, box spring and metal bed frame are each priced on their own.
How much does a twin bed mattress and box spring cost?
A set costs the twin mattress price plus the base. The pairings in our price table run from $434.99 (C.J. Mulholland Series 5000 plus the standard box spring) to $3,799.98 (Sprout Durus single on its slat box). The three over $500 delivered free in our November 3 checkout test to a Brantford address.
