Brantford mattress disposal and social assistance guide — ODSP Ontario Works options

Brantford Mattress Disposal & Social Assistance Guide

Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic. ODSP recipients receive $1,408 monthly (single, 2025-2026 rates), and Ontario Works provides discretionary benefits for essential furniture including beds. Contact Brantford Social Services at (519) 759-3330 for assistance.

Reading Time: 10 minutes

Getting rid of an old mattress in Brantford should not be complicated. And getting a new one should not feel impossible, even when money is tight. But if you have ever stood in your apartment looking at a worn-out mattress and wondered how to deal with it on a fixed income, you know that the gap between "should not" and "is not" can feel very wide.

This guide covers both sides of the equation. First, how to properly dispose of a mattress in the City of Brantford, whether through the free bulk pickup program or the Mohawk Street Landfill. Second, what financial support exists for people on ODSP or Ontario Works who need a new mattress. We also cover the affordable housing developments happening across Brantford in 2026, because where you live shapes what you need.

We wrote this because our customers ask us these questions regularly. Brad has been at Mattress Miracle since 1987, and some of the most meaningful conversations in this store happen when someone walks in not sure they can afford a bed at all. We would rather give you useful information than a sales pitch.

Brantford Mattress Disposal Options

In Brantford, you cannot put a mattress out with your regular garbage. The City does not collect large items on your normal collection day. But there are two straightforward options: the free bulk item pickup program, or dropping it off yourself at the Mohawk Street Landfill.

A third option, and one that saves you the trouble entirely, is buying a new mattress from a retailer that offers old mattress removal. We do this at Mattress Miracle, and we will get to that later in the guide.

Illegal dumping carries fines up to $10,000 in Ontario. Beyond the fine, it creates problems for neighbourhoods that already deal with enough. Brantford's disposal options exist so that mattresses end up where they should.

City Bulk Pickup: How It Works

Brantford mattress disposal options compared — city pickup vs landfill vs retailer removal

The City of Brantford provides free curbside bulk item pickup for residents. You get this service twice per year at no cost beyond the property taxes that fund the program. Here is how it works.

Brantford Bulk Item Pickup: Step by Step

Step 1: Register at myBrantford.ca if you have not already.
Step 2: Schedule your pickup at bulkpickup.brantford.ca or call 519-759-4150.
Step 3: Give at least 7 days' notice before your requested date.
Step 4: Wrap your mattress in plastic (required).
Step 5: Place it at the curb on your scheduled day.
Cost: Free for City of Brantford residents (twice per year).
Alternative phone line: 519-759-0070 (Bulk Collection Line) if you have trouble scheduling online.

A few things to know. This service is for residential addresses, not businesses. If you live in a multi-unit building, apartment, or condo, you cannot schedule an individual pickup. Your property management or condo committee needs to coordinate a date and location for the building. That is worth a conversation with your building manager if you need to get rid of a mattress.

The City does not accept construction waste, building materials, hot tubs, or furnaces through this program. But mattresses, furniture, and appliances are all covered.

Mohawk Street Landfill Drop-Off

If you have access to a truck or can arrange one, you can bring your mattress directly to the Mohawk Street Landfill at 20 Morrison Road in Brantford. The landfill operates Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Mohawk Street Landfill Tipping Fees (2026)

  • Minimum load fee: $10 per load for loads weighing 150 kg or less
  • Heavier loads: Charged per tonne at the applicable tipping fee rate
  • Loads with 10%+ recyclables: $210 per tonne (effective January 1, 2026)
  • No limit on number of small-load visits per year
  • Location: 20 Morrison Road, Brantford
  • Hours: Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Confirm current rates at 519-759-4150 before your visit.

A single mattress will fall well under the 150 kg minimum, so you are looking at the $10 flat fee for most mattress drop-offs. Even bringing a mattress and box spring together, you are under that threshold.

The landfill does attempt to strip mattresses for recycling, separating the steel coils from the foam. It is labour-intensive work, and Ontario does not yet have a provincial mattress recycling program as of 2026. Your old mattress is not going to be reborn as something new. But the metal components can be recovered, and that is better than the whole thing going into the ground.

Wrapping Your Mattress in Plastic for Disposal

Whether you use the City's bulk pickup or drop off at the landfill, wrapping your mattress in plastic is required for curbside collection and strongly recommended for landfill drop-off. This is especially important if the mattress has any signs of bed bugs, staining, or moisture damage.

Here is the practical approach:

  • Heavy-duty plastic sheeting from any hardware store works. A 3-mil or thicker roll costs $10 to $20 and covers multiple mattresses.
  • Mattress disposal bags are available at some home improvement stores. These are sized for mattresses and seal with tape.
  • Duct tape or packing tape to seal the edges. You do not need it to be airtight, just fully covered.
  • If you suspect bed bugs, wrap the mattress before moving it to prevent spreading. Do not drag an unwrapped, potentially infested mattress through common hallways.

The wrapping requirement exists for hygiene and for the safety of the workers handling these items. It takes 15 minutes and a few dollars. Do it properly.

ODSP Payment Breakdown 2025-2026

Social assistance and affordable mattress options in Brantford guide

If you are on the Ontario Disability Support Program, you already know that the numbers are tight. As of July 1, 2025, ODSP rates increased by 2.8%, which was the smallest annual increase since the government began inflation-based adjustments in 2022. Here is what the current payment breakdown looks like.

ODSP Monthly Payment Rates (July 2025 to June 2026)

ODSP payments have two components: Basic Needs (food, clothing, personal care, household supplies) and Shelter Allowance (rent, mortgage, utilities).

Single person: Basic Needs $809 + Shelter $599 = $1,408 total
Couple (one disabled): Basic Needs $1,166 + Shelter $941
Couple (both disabled): Basic Needs $1,613 + Shelter $941 (capped at $2,370)
Single parent, 1 child: Basic Needs $952 + Shelter $941 + Ontario Child Benefit ~$144 = ~$2,037 total

Source: Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. Amounts shown are maximums. Shelter is paid based on actual housing costs up to the maximum.

At $1,408 per month for a single person, there is not a lot of room. The basic needs portion of $809 is meant to cover food, clothing, personal care items, and household supplies. A mattress is a household item, but saving for one from within that $809, when food and toiletries come first, is genuinely difficult.

That is why the additional benefits matter. ODSP's Mandatory Special Necessities benefit covers medically required beds (see our ODSP and Ontario Works Bed Funding Guide for the full application process). And for non-medical bed needs, discretionary benefits are available through your local social services office.

Ontario Works Bedding and Furniture Benefits

Ontario Works recipients face even tighter budgets than ODSP. The maximum basic needs allowance for a single person on OW is $390 per month, with a maximum shelter allowance of $390, totalling $780. When you are starting over, whether leaving a shelter, escaping a difficult living situation, or setting up your first apartment, a mattress can feel like a luxury expense you cannot reach.

It is not a luxury. It is a basic need. And there is support available.

The old Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit, which provided up to $799 for singles and $1,500 for families with dependents for furniture and household setup, was eliminated in 2013 by the provincial government. That responsibility was downloaded to municipalities, which now administer their own programs.

Ontario Works Benefits for Bedding in Brantford

In Brantford, Ontario Works recipients can access discretionary benefits for essential household furniture including beds and mattresses. These are approved by your caseworker based on demonstrated need. If you have no bed, if your mattress is infested, or if your sleeping situation is unsafe, these are grounds for a request.

The Housing Stabilization Fund covers up to $1,600 for singles/couples or $3,000 for families when setting up a new residence. This can include beds, mattresses, and essential bedding. You must apply through your OW or ODSP caseworker within 3 months of moving.

Contact: City of Brantford Social Services, (519) 759-3330

The process is not automatic and it involves paperwork. You need to speak to your caseworker, explain your situation, and provide whatever documentation supports the request: a new lease, photos of your current sleeping arrangement, a letter from public health about bed bugs. The amount approved varies and is at your caseworker's discretion.

We are not going to pretend the system is perfect. The amounts are modest, the process can be slow, and not every request gets approved. But the support exists, and asking for it is your right.

Discretionary Benefits Through Brantford Social Services

The City of Brantford's Community Support and Social Services department administers discretionary benefits for people on social assistance and for eligible low-income residents on fixed incomes who are not receiving OW or ODSP.

The Special Assistance Discretionary Fund provides help with medical benefits like prescription medication, dental, and vision care. For furniture needs specifically, the pathway is through your Ontario Works or ODSP caseworker, or through the Housing Stabilization Fund if you are setting up a new home.

How to Ask for Help with a Mattress

If you are on OW or ODSP in Brantford and need a mattress, here is the most direct approach:

1. Call your assigned caseworker. If you do not have one, call intake at (519) 759-3330.
2. State clearly: "I need a bed and I cannot afford one." Explain why (no bed, infested mattress, unsafe sleeping situation).
3. Bring documentation if you have it. A lease, photos, a letter from public health.
4. Ask specifically about discretionary benefits for household furniture and the Housing Stabilization Fund.
5. If you are denied, ask for the reason in writing. You have the right to appeal.

Community agencies can also help navigate the process. The Brantford Salvation Army provides emergency furniture assistance. Nova Vita Domestic Violence Prevention Services supports women and families leaving abusive situations. St. Vincent de Paul Society operates through local parishes. These organizations know the system and can advocate alongside you.

Affordable Housing Developments in Brantford

Brantford's housing picture is changing. Several major projects are underway or recently completed that will add affordable units to a city that badly needs them. If you are on a waiting list or looking for affordable housing, here is what is happening.

32 Bridge Street: Jaycees Brantford Non-Profit Homes

This purpose-built 4-storey development at 32 Bridge Street will add 24 affordable housing units specifically for women and women-led families facing housing insecurity. The project broke ground in March 2025 with an anticipated opening in spring or summer 2026.

32 Bridge Street Quick Facts

Units: 24 affordable units (bachelor, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom)
Purpose: Women and women-led families
Ground floor: Social enterprise laundromat cafe and Community Hub
Developer: Jaycees Brantford Non-Profit Homes
City contribution: $1.5 million subsidy
Total cost: $10.6 million
Anticipated opening: Spring/Summer 2026

The ground-floor laundromat cafe and Community Hub concept is worth noting. This is not just housing. It is an attempt to create community infrastructure that serves the building's residents and the surrounding neighbourhood.

Lucy Marco Place: 40 Queen Street

The City purchased Lucy Marco Place from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2023 and converted it into affordable housing. The six-storey building now provides 41 units, including both one-bedroom and three-bedroom configurations, to house individuals and families.

Lucy Marco Place connects to Heritage House (27 units) through a shared circulation and services link, creating a combined 68-unit affordable housing complex in Brantford's downtown. Both buildings are now City-owned and operated.

If you are moving into Lucy Marco Place or any affordable housing unit in Brantford and need a mattress, the Housing Stabilization Fund is specifically designed to help with that transition. Talk to your caseworker before or immediately after your move-in date.

Fox Ridge Community: 389 West Street

Fox Ridge is the most ambitious housing project currently underway in Brantford. The City took possession of the former long-term care facility at 389 West Street on October 30, 2025, and Council ratified the Fox Ridge Business Plan on November 25, 2025.

The plan transforms Fox Ridge into a fully integrated housing hub across three phases.

Fox Ridge Community: Phased Development

  • Phase 1 (target: October 1, 2026): 50 emergency shelter units for families, women, couples, and vulnerable individuals. Capital investment: $11.47 million.
  • Phase 2 (estimated start: January 2027): Transitional and supportive housing with onsite health and social services.
  • Phase 3 (estimated start: early 2027, completion end of 2030): Permanent affordable housing, potentially 72 to 144 modular units.

Six Nations Elders at Fox Ridge

Before the broader renovation begins, a section of Fox Ridge is providing immediate, practical help. Following the devastating flooding on Six Nations of the Grand River in June 2025, which forced the closure of Iroquois Lodge, approximately 50 displaced elders needed a safe place to live.

Beginning in early 2026, a portion of the Fox Ridge building was leased to Six Nations of the Grand River Long Term Care to temporarily house these elders while the new Iroquois Lodge is built. The arrangement allows the City to continue renovations in unused wings without disrupting care.

Six Nations is working with the City of Brantford on a two-year lease and is in discussions with the Ministry of Long-Term Care on funding for the Iroquois Lodge rebuild. A new 64-bed, 60,000-square-foot facility is being planned for Sunrise Court in Ohsweken.

This is community taking care of community. Fox Ridge simultaneously serves Six Nations elders who need housing now and Brantford residents who will benefit from the phased development over the coming years.

Mattress Miracle: Value Options and Old Mattress Removal

We are a mattress store. We sell mattresses. We are not going to pretend otherwise. But we also live in this community, and we understand that not everyone walks in with a flexible budget.

When you buy a new mattress from Mattress Miracle, we offer old mattress removal. We take your old one away when we deliver your new one. No wrapping in plastic, no scheduling bulk pickup, no borrowing a truck for the landfill. It is included.

For customers working within a social assistance budget, Brad's approach is simple: tell us what you have to spend, and we will find the best sleep surface within that number. Our Restonic ComfortCare twin starts at $690 with 690 individually wrapped coils. We carry clearance items that can bring quality mattresses within reach of assistance funding amounts.

A Note from Brad

"If you are on ODSP or Ontario Works and you need a bed, call us. Even if our prices are above what your funding covers, we can point you to the right resources in Brantford. We have been here since 1987 and we know who helps with what. And if you do buy from us, we will take your old mattress away. One less thing to figure out."

We also work with community organizations. If a local agency is helping a family furnish a home and needs a mattress recommendation within a specific budget, we are happy to assist. That is not charity, it is just being a Brantford business that takes being part of this community seriously.
