What Foam Density Actually Measures
Density measures mass per unit of volume. A 4 PCF foam contains 4 pounds of foam material per cubic foot of volume. A 1.5 PCF foam contains only 1.5 pounds per cubic foot. The denser foam has more raw material in the same space, which means more cell walls, more polymer structure, and greater resistance to compression fatigue over time.
Density is measured by cutting a foam sample to exact dimensions, weighing it, and dividing the weight by the volume. The result is expressed in either pounds per cubic foot (PCF), which is common in North America, or kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), which is the metric equivalent used in technical literature. To convert: 1 PCF = approximately 16 kg/m³.
What density does not measure: how soft or firm the foam feels. Two foams can have identical density but completely different firmness ratings (IFD). Density tells you about durability. Firmness (IFD) tells you about feel. Both matter, but they measure different things.
Density vs. Firmness: Two Different Things
This is the most important distinction to understand when evaluating mattress foam. Density and firmness are independent properties that are often confused because many people assume denser foam must feel harder. This is not the case.
You can manufacture a high-density (durable) foam that is very soft (low IFD). High-density soft foam is what quality memory foam comfort layers are made from. It cradles the body effectively and maintains that feel for years because the dense structure resists breakdown.
You can also manufacture a low-density (less durable) foam that is quite firm. Budget mattress support cores often use firm but low-density polyurethane foam. They feel solid initially but compress and lose support faster than higher-density alternatives.
When a manufacturer lists only firmness without density, or only density without firmness, you are not getting the full picture of what the foam will perform like or how long it will last.

A memory foam layer at 2.5 PCF is considered low-density for memory foam, even though 2.5 PCF would be considered high-density for standard polyurethane comfort foam. Always interpret density relative to the foam type being described.

Foam breakdown is a physical process of polymer fatigue. Each time a foam cell is compressed, it undergoes a small amount of permanent deformation. Over thousands of sleep cycles, this deformation accumulates, and the foam progressively loses its original thickness and supportive properties.
Higher-density foam has more polymer material in each unit volume. More polymer material means more cell walls resisting deformation. The same load applied to a high-density and low-density foam produces less permanent deformation in the high-density version. A brand or retailer that can answer these questions specifically and accurately is one that knows its product well. Vague answers about "high-quality foam" or "premium materials" without accompanying numbers should prompt more questions.

Is higher foam density always better?
Higher density is better for durability, but it comes with trade-offs. Very high-density memory foam (5+ PCF) retains more heat because there is less open cell space for air movement. It also tends to have more motion resistance, which affects how easily you can change positions. The right density balances durability with the other performance characteristics important to your sleep needs.
Can I find out the foam density of a mattress I already own?
You can try contacting the manufacturer directly with the model number from your mattress law label. Many brands will provide foam specifications to owners upon request. If the mattress was purchased through a retailer, they may also have access to manufacturer spec sheets.
Does foam density affect how a mattress smells?
Off-gassing (the smell from new foam) is related to the chemicals used in foam production, not density specifically. CertiPUR-US certification covers limits on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which is the standard most relevant to off-gassing concerns.
