IFD tells you how firm a foam is today, on the day it is tested. It does not tell you:

  • How long the foam will maintain that firmness. A 30 IFD foam could hold its rating for 10 years or collapse to 15 IFD in 18 months. IFD alone cannot predict this.
  • How the foam responds to body heat. Memory foam IFD changes with temperature. A 25 IFD memory foam at room temperature may feel like 15 IFD after your body heat softens it.
  • The quality of the chemicals or manufacturing process. Two foams with identical IFD ratings can be made with completely different chemical formulations, resulting in different durability, off-gassing, and long-term performance.
  • How the foam performs in a mattress. IFD is tested on an isolated foam sample. In a mattress, foam interacts with other layers, coils, and fabrics that change the feel.
